Holden led the group up to the 58th floor, the executive level of Lockwood Group.
Ms. Langdon, one of the senior secretaries, greeted them and escorted them to a lounge area. She politely informed them that Mr. Lockwood was currently with a guest.
Kian checked his watch. It was 10:36. Their appointment was for 10:40. They only had four minutes. He curtly told her they would wait in the hallway.
The four of them stood idly by the decorative plants near the corridor.
Suddenly, a soft ding echoed from the private elevator. The doors slid open.
Ms. Langdon immediately bowed. "Good morning, Mr. Lockwood!"
Alistair Lockwood, the Chairman of Lockwood Group, stepped out.
Kian's face lit up. His father had some connections with Alistair. "Good morning!" he said, offering a deep bow.
Alistair looked at him with mild indifference. Kian quickly introduced himself.
"Why are you waiting out here?" Alistair asked smoothly.
Kian immediately seized the opportunity to throw the despised Winifred under the bus. "My friends and I had an appointment with the CEO, but just a moment ago... he brought a woman up here..."
He trailed off, feigning awkwardness.
Kian expected Alistair to be furious. Instead, the older man's sharp, world-weary eyes simply drifted toward the closed office door. The heavy lines on his forehead smoothed out. He clasped his hands behind his back and looked at Ms. Langdon. "Who did he bring up?"
"A Ms. Shultz, sir," she replied respectfully.
"Oh?"
Instantly, Alistair's stern expression melted into a look of absolute warmth. "Dr. Shultz is here?"
The sudden shift gave Kian whiplash. He watched in horror as a genuine smile broke across the Chairman's hardened face.
Alistair looked like he had just won the lottery. An executive accompanying him chuckled. "It’s wonderful to see the CEO finally bringing someone special around, sir."
"It is," Alistair agreed happily. "I just hope he marries her soon. Settle down, start a family, have a few sons."
The hallway fell completely silent. Kian knew exactly why. Alistair Lockwood had no children of his own. As he aged, he likely harbored deep regrets and wanted to ensure his nephew didn't make the same mistakes.
Alistair turned to leave. Before stepping into the elevator, he glanced at Kian. "Leland is handling a major life event today. His schedule might be slightly delayed. I trust you'll be understanding if he's not entirely hospitable."
Kian didn't dare argue. "Of course, of course, no problem at all!"
Alistair's gaze swept over the rest of the group. Preston eagerly introduced himself. "Good morning, sir. I'm Preston York, Julian York's son from Seaport City."
Alistair gave a curt nod.
Iris flashed her most dazzling, camera-ready smile.
