Chapter 17 Title Slime Slayer Acquired
Chloe noticed that several of her other items had lost a considerable chunk of Durability. The wooden cabin was the worst off, its roof now caved inward.
Her Basic Arcane Dew Collector had toppled over limply, and she had no idea how much of the dew inside had spilled out.
There was no time to mourn the losses. Chloe summoned a Pyro Sphere into her palm.
The bright pyro sphere was the size of a basketball. After an entire night of drilling with Aqua Sphere, her aim had become remarkably respectable.
The Pyro Sphere shot straight toward the giant Slime. The fireball struck the Slime’s body and erupted into a cloud of steam.
The Slime let out a furious hiss and hurled another Aqua Sphere at her.
This one was massive. Chloe knew full well that if it hit her squarely, she wouldn’t be able to withstand the blow.
With her Agility so low, she had to throw herself desperately to the side while simultaneously launching an Aqua Sphere of her own to knock the incoming orb off course.
Her water sphere clipped the giant projectile mid–flight, and the deflected attack slammed into the ground, gouging out a crater nearly 20 inches deep. The sight of it sent a cold shiver down Chloe’s spine.
Chloe forced herself to stay calm. She tightened her grip on her shield, summoned another Pyro Sphere, and hurled it squarely at the Slime.
She seized every opening she could find, dodging the giant aqua spheres while peppering the Slime’s body with her own pyro sphere.
Whenever a Pyro Sphere met one of the Slime’s water orbs, they canceled each other out in a violent burst of scalding steam.
The steam itself was searing hot, enough to burn her skin, and it wasted her attack entirely. To do any real damage, her pyro sphere had to land with absolute precision.
This was the first time Chloe had felt death so close. Every one of the Slime’s Aqua Spheres grazed past her skin close enough to leave a trail of searing pain. One solid hit to her body would almost certainly cause internal bleeding.
The players in this world had nothing beyond Common healing supplies, and a wound like that would mean death, even if she managed to bring the Slime down.
She was walking on a razor’s edge. Chloe remained on high alert, never letting her pyro sphere stop flying.
‘I’m so incredibly lucky that I traded for Pyro Sphere with LilFish, she thought in the heat of the battle. ‘And thank goodness I took that nap at noon and recovered so much Energy.
‘Without it, I would be completely helpless against this thing right now.‘
She dodged yet another Aqua Sphere and, in the same motion, landed a Pyro Sphere directly on the tiny water flower perched atop the giant Slime’s head.
The Slime emitted a piercing shriek. It was the first time Chloe had ever heard a Slime make any sound at all.
‘That must be its weak point, she realized.
The Slime was the size of a small truck, which made it an easy target, but the many pyro sphere she had already landed on its main body had seemed to do little more than annoy it.
Now that she had found a weak spot, the fight had shifted in her favor. Chloe circled around her wooden cabin, using it as cover from the Slime while she aimed her fireballs at the little flower.
Her precision under pressure was something she owed to her high school days back in the modern world, when she had loved playing table tennis and had developed an excellent ability to lock onto a target.

After she landed several more hits on the flower, the Slime flew into a true rage. It hurled its entire round body forward like a living sedan, careening straight toward the wooden cabin and the woman crouched behind it. The wooden cabin collapsed completely.
Even with the cabin absorbing the brunt of the charge and her shield braced in front of her, Chloe was still sent flying.
She hurtled backward across her territory and slammed into the invisible barrier at the edge. The only thing that stopped her from tumbling off the platform entirely was that boundary wall.
Agonizing pain exploded through her back. Her vision went black. For two or three whole seconds, she lay on the ground, utterly unable to pull herself up.
Yet even with the pain stealing every ounce of her focus, her body reacted on pure instinct, rolling to the side just in time to avoid the next Aqua Sphere that came crashing down.
Chloe gasped for breath. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the wreckage of the wooden cabin she had only just finished building that morning strewn across the ground, her soft white bed broken and scattered among the debris.
A wave of grief swept through her heart. Drawing on her last reserves of strength, she fired a rapid volley of four fireballs in quick succession.
She compressed each one down to the size of a ping–pong ball, scorching hot and lightning fast, and sent them slamming into the flower atop the Slime’s head in a tight cluster.
The Slime let out a final screech, swayed, and collapsed limply to the ground, its body dissolving to reveal a brilliantly gleaming Golden Chest.
Notification: [Congratulations. You have slain a High–Level Slime. Through proficient use of Pyro Sphere and Aqua Sphere, Talent Points +1.]
Chloe’s vision was swimming in darkness. She was certain that her Energy had now plummeted to the single digits. She paid no attention to whatever the System Notification had just said.
She forced her battered body upright, her breath coming in ragged pants, and stumbled over to check on her dew collectors.
One of them had been smashed apart on the ground. The other, by some stroke of luck, was still intact.
Strangely enough, the clash of Water Elemental Energy seemed to have boosted the surviving collector’s efficiency considerably, and it now held a total of 14 ounces of dew.
What was more, silvery specks of light seemed to shimmer faintly within the liquid.
Every inch of Chloe’s body throbbed with pain, and she barely registered these small details. She tipped the collector back and gulped down a deep mouthful of the dew.
Almost instantly, the searing pain in her wounds dulled to a manageable ache. Her blurred vision sharpened and cleared, and her Energy bar, which had been scraping the very bottom, surged upward in one huge leap.
A single swallow had restored 70 points. Chloe stared at the remaining dew in her hands.
Notification: [Premium Arcane Dew: A more refined compound of water elements, elevated to an Intermediate dew through specialized magical techniques.
[Attributes: Vitalizing Waters / Mana Enrichment / Restorative Item.]
For the first time, the dew carried a proper description. Chloe let out a slow breath. ‘A blessing in disguise, I suppose.
She didn’t immediately rush over to the gleaming Golden Chest sitting in the corner. Instead, her gaze lingered on the ruined heap that had been her wooden cabin, and a deep sadness settled in her chest.
