Nestor let out a long sigh. “I’m getting old. Sooner or later, this company needs to be passed on to someone younger.”
Waldo’s jaw clenched, his cheek twitching before he let out a low, mocking laugh.
“Nestor, looks like you’re pretty happy with Lawrence. Really? Do you honestly think he’s good enough for Catherine?”
Nestor instantly heard the bitterness in Waldo’s voice. He knew Waldo’s move to block the order was nothing but a jab at Lawrence.
“Waldo, that’s not really fair,” Nestor replied, his voice gentle but firm. “Lawrence is the man Catherine chose. It’s not up to me to decide if he’s worthy or not. All I care about is her happiness.”
He’d seen what Lawrence could do. Sure, the guy didn’t have much money, but ambition counted for more.
Watching Waldo’s face grow darker, Nestor tried to be patient, hoping to talk some sense into him. “Waldo, I know you care about Catherine, but feelings can’t be forced. Whatever you and Catherine had is in the past. You should let it go. Let’s keep business and personal matters separate, okay?”
Waldo leaned forward on Nestor’s desk, his voice sharp. “Nestor, at the engagement party, you handed Catherine over to me yourself. Didn’t you see how much I loved her? Tell me, what does Lawrence have that I don’t? He’s just a broke soldier who tricked Catherine. Now he wants your company too. How can you not see what he’s doing?”
Jealousy and anger flickered in Waldo’s eyes. He barely bothered to hide it.
“Waldo.” Nestor’s tone grew colder, more authoritative. “Be careful what you say. Lawrence is my son-in-law now. I won’t stand for you talking about him like that. Whatever you and Catherine had is over. I expect you not to ruin their happiness.”
