Catherine yanked her hand free and stepped back, her voice icy. “Waldo, stop it. We’re done.”
That moment at the sea—when he had to choose who to save—was all the answer she’d ever need. She knew this “devotion” he was showing now wasn’t love. It was just wounded pride.
He was bitter about the five years he’d “lost” with her. Bitter that the woman who once loved him with her whole heart could marry someone else without a second thought.
But he never once thought about what he’d done wrong. He was the kind of man who could leave his fiancée stranded in the ocean, then show up later acting like he wanted to win her back.
Honestly, it was pathetic.
“Catherine, Waldo.” Shirley came in, arms full of files and her laptop.
Waldo turned to look at Shirley, and Catherine took her chance, slipping away toward the elevators.
Waldo made a move to follow, but Shirley called out, her voice soft, almost pleading. “Waldo, after the way she treats you, why bother chasing her?”
Waldo stopped in his tracks. He watched Catherine disappear into the elevator, then closed his eyes, his pride refusing to let him chase after her again.
“Waldo, I get how you feel, but Catherine—” Shirley started, trying to comfort him.
Then she noticed the bouquet of champagne roses he was holding. She stepped closer, her eyes lighting up just a little. “Those flowers are gorgeous. Don’t let them go to waste. Can I have them?”
Waldo stared down at the flowers he’d picked out just for Catherine. Now they just felt like a joke, a reminder of how badly he’d failed.
Annoyed, he shoved the bouquet into Shirley’s arms and walked straight to the door.
Shirley hugged the flowers to her chest, feeling even worse. It was like she was picking up Catherine’s leftovers.
The man. The flowers.
Everything Catherine didn’t want.
Shirley walked to the elevator. In the mirrored walls, her reflection looked back at her, humiliated. She bit down hard on her lip. She promised herself that in this Project Apex Initiative, she would make sure Catherine never had the upper hand again.
