Lawrence kept his eyes on the road, acting like he hadn't heard her at all.
Catherine let out a quiet breath, her nerves settling just a bit. She glanced over at him and asked, “Are you free to come with me tomorrow?”
“I probably won’t be,” Lawrence said, his voice calm. “But the CEO will probably send someone along to help you out, just to make sure you get whatever you want. Just enjoy yourself.”
Honestly, Catherine figured it might be better if Lawrence didn’t go. Waldo would be there, and she really didn’t want to watch him take jabs at Lawrence’s background again.
“Alright, I’ll ask a friend to come with me instead,” Catherine said with a nod.
The car rolled smoothly through the gates. As soon as she stepped out, Catherine remembered she’d have to move back home the next day. The thought made her chest ache. She slipped her arm through Lawrence’s and pressed her cheek to his shoulder. “My dad’s really putting you through it this time. I’m sorry. You don’t deserve that.”
Lawrence stopped and turned to face her. He brushed his hand gently along her cheek, leaning in a little. His voice softened. “You don’t have to apologize. This is just your dad’s way of loving you. He wants what’s best for you, and he wants someone trustworthy for his company. I get where he’s coming from. I want him to see what I can do and who I am, so he’ll feel good about letting you be with me.”
Catherine’s heart skipped. She hadn’t expected Lawrence to be so understanding, to see things from her father’s point of view, even when he was the one being tested.
“Lawrence…” Her voice caught in her throat. She felt the sting of tears, her heart aching for him.
Lawrence noticed her eyes shining. He wiped gently at the corner of her eye with his thumb. “Don’t worry. As your husband, it’s my job to prove myself to your family, to show them I can give you a good and steady life. If we ever have a daughter, I’d do exactly what your dad’s doing now.”
His words made her chest tighten with emotion. She swallowed hard, her voice barely above a whisper. “Thank you, Lawrence.”
He pulled her into his arms, resting his chin on her head. “No, thank you.”
