A little while later, Lawrence showed up. He spotted Nestor and called out, “Dad.”
Nestor barely looked up, just pointed at the production line that had gone haywire. “Take care of this first.”
Lawrence nodded and headed straight for the control panel. He locked his eyes on the screen, fingers flying as he typed in a few quick commands. The error code blinked away, replaced by a green light that said everything was running smoothly again.
“All set,” Lawrence said as he stepped back. He turned to the technician, calmly explained what had gone wrong and how to fix it next time.
The technician was all admiration. “Thanks for your help, Lawrence.”
Nestor watched the whole thing unfold. Before he could say a word, an executive nearby jumped in. “Nestor, Lawrence is amazing. He can fix issues on all six production lines. Even at Nexus Dynamics, he’d be considered a top engineer.”
Nestor looked at Lawrence, feeling more and more pleased. He was capable and steady, knew his tech inside and out, and was great at managing people too. It finally hit Nestor that working with someone as full of himself as Waldo had always left him a little uneasy.
Someone like Lawrence, who kept his head down and worked hard without any arrogance, was rare these days. Lawrence stood out as someone truly worth investing in.
Nestor walked over and gave Lawrence’s shoulder a proud slap. “Good job. You’re making me look good out here.”
Lawrence just smiled, a little shy. “It’s nothing, Dad. Just doing my part.”
“Come on, let’s check out the other lines,” Nestor said, clearly in a good mood. He took the chance to test Lawrence some more, and the more he saw, the more impressed he became.
No wonder Catherine was so devoted to him, willing even to let go of her mother’s twenty percent stake just to back him up.
“Come by for dinner tonight. I’ll have Catherine come home too.”
“Sounds good. I’ll pick her up,” Lawrence said.

At The James Group, Waldo had just finished a meeting when Shirley walked in.
“Waldo, want to come over for dinner tonight? Catherine moved back home.”
Waldo’s eyes brightened. “Catherine’s living at The Blair Estate again? What happened?”
“My dad still doesn’t approve of Lawrence. He wants to test them and told them to live apart for two months. If you still want a shot with Catherine, this is your chance.”
A complicated look flickered across Waldo’s face. He lifted an eyebrow. “Thanks for telling me, Shirley. I think I’ll have a drink with Nestor tonight.”
