After his tea, Nestor headed upstairs to get back to work. Ever since he’d found out Lawrence was actually the CEO of Nexus Dynamics, the idea of retiring had completely vanished from his mind. How could he possibly let someone as busy as Lawrence help run his company? From then on, he decided he’d just handle whatever work he still could, taking everything back into his own hands.
He sat at his desk and started going through some paperwork, but before long, a sharp pain shot through his chest. He sucked in a shaky breath, pressing his hand to his heart, barely daring to move or even breathe too loudly.
The pain lasted several minutes before it finally eased up, leaving him rattled and scared. Something just felt wrong. Leaning on the desk for support, Nestor slowly got up and waited for the spinning in his head to pass. He made his way to the safe, pulled out his will, put on his glasses, and began combing through the documents, making a few quick changes. His breath was still uneven as his mind started drifting to the past.
He thought about how he’d gone from being a truck driver to where he was now. He thought about his late wife and everything that had happened in the second half of his life. With a long sigh, he made one last change to the paperwork, transferring thirty-one percent of his shares to Catherine.
With the twenty percent she already had, Catherine would now hold fifty-one percent. That was enough for her to take over the company.
He owed her this. It was something he needed to make right.
He also signed over a big downtown apartment to Catherine. Some fixed assets went to Alice, and he left six percent of his shares to Shirley. That’s how he decided to split things up.
The pain in his chest today made him realize he might not have much time left.
He thought about going to the hospital that Saturday, but then remembered it was Shirley’s engagement party. He pushed the idea aside and convinced himself he could manage a little longer.

The next day, Catherine met up with Nettie for lunch at a restaurant across from the office. They caught up for a bit and eventually started talking about Shirley’s engagement.
