Nestor gave a weak nod, sadness flickering in his eyes. He couldn't believe that in the moment he needed support the most, he couldn't even trust Alice.
He reached out and gently squeezed Neely’s hand. His voice was rough and quiet. “Tell Lawrence what’s going on. He’ll know what to do.”
Neely looked at him, serious. “Do you really trust him?” This wasn’t just about Nestor anymore. If anything went wrong, Lawrence could be in danger too.
Nestor nodded with more force this time. “I trust him.”
“What about Catherine?”
Nestor shook his head. If Catherine found out Alice had poisoned him, she’d lose it. Right now, he needed to figure out why Alice would do something like this and collect proof. Once he was better, he’d deal with everything. For now, only Lawrence could handle this.
Neely understood. He patted Nestor’s arm. “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure he knows.”
Finally, Nestor closed his eyes, looking completely worn out.
Soon, the doors to the operating room opened again and Neely had his assistant wheel Nestor out.
“Dad, Dad...” Catherine started to rush over, but Alice got there first, grabbing the side of the bed. Tears streamed down her face as she looked at Nestor. “Nestor, what happened? Please, you can’t leave us like this!”
Nestor listened to Alice’s sobs, and all he heard was how fake she sounded. Under the blanket, his hand curled into a tight fist.
“Dad, don’t scare me. My wedding is next month. You have to be okay.” Shirley’s voice cut through the noise.
As the gurney rolled away, Catherine followed close behind. Neely stopped Lawrence with a quick call. “Hang on, I need to talk to you.”
