After the Fall A Leap into a Stranger's Arms novel Chapter 49

Catherine grinned and took a small step back. "I'll eat whatever you make. I'm not picky at all. Honestly, I'm super easy to please."

Lawrence glanced up at her, his eyes softening with a quiet affection. "Alright."

The next morning, Lawrence had to head out for a bit. Catherine packed her things and left too.

Lawrence had offered to go with her to see the Blair family, but she didn't want him to deal with Nestor's snide remarks. It was better to handle the whole wedding gift thing herself. After that, she and Lawrence could just focus on their own life together, no one else needed to interfere.

It was Saturday, so Nestor was home.

As Catherine walked through the garden, a maid spotted her and hurried inside to tell Alice, "Mrs. Blair, Catherine is back."

Alice looked up in surprise. Catherine was back? She actually dared to show her face around here?

"Is she alone?" Alice asked.

"Yes, she came by herself."

Alice let out a sarcastic little laugh. Of course, she didn't have the guts to bring that broke husband of hers home.

She set down her coffee, a sly smile curling on her lips. She straightened her clothes and settled herself on the sofa, every bit the picture of a perfect, elegant hostess.

When Catherine walked in, she immediately saw her stepmother playing her usual role, acting all refined and superior.

"Oh, look who finally remembered where home is," Alice said, dragging out her words. Her eyes flicked to the door, searching for someone else. "What, too embarrassed to bring your penniless husband along?"

Catherine tossed her bag onto the sofa. "Where's my dad?"

"It doesn't matter where it came from. You asked for one hundred million, and we've delivered," Catherine said. She picked up her bag, ready to leave.

"Stop," Nestor suddenly called out. Did Catherine really think he wanted the money? He had only demanded it to humiliate Lawrence, to drive Catherine away from him.

"Dad, you're not thinking of going back on your word, are you?" Catherine turned to look at him.

Nestor let out a bitter laugh. "You really think I'd let you marry him just like that?"

Regret flickered across his face. He shouldn't have asked for a hundred million. He should've said a billion, or even ten billion.

"Dad, can you please just keep your promise?" Catherine could tell Nestor was wavering, and irritation bubbled up inside her.

With his face set in stone, Nestor stared her down. "Do you really believe marriage is some kind of joke? Does he think he can just buy you for a hundred million?"
