Shirley’s face lit up. She walked over to her bag, grabbed her compact mirror, and checked her makeup with extra care before heading out the door.
She knocked on Waldo’s office door. Inside, he sounded tired. “Come in.”
Shirley stepped inside and found Waldo looking completely drained. Her heart twisted with pity, though a flash of irritation followed. Was Catherine really worth all this heartbreak?
“Waldo, you’re finally here.” She walked in closer, her gaze soft as she took him in.
“How’s the tech summit speech coming along?” Waldo looked up, searching her face.
“It’s all set.” Shirley answered with calm confidence.
Waldo gave a slight nod. There was a glimmer in his eyes. Once the summit arrived, he’d finally see Catherine again.
Shirley noticed right away what he was thinking about and felt that familiar sting of jealousy.
“Waldo, have you seen Catherine lately? She and that engineer—” Shirley couldn’t help herself, poking right at his sore spot.
Waldo’s face clouded over. “What engineer? He’s just some loser who lives off women and sweet talk.”
Shirley smirked to herself. He wasn’t wrong. Catherine was now the chief engineer at Nexus Dynamics, and her so-called engineer husband really did seem like a freeloader.
“Catherine’s just too trusting. She got taken in by him,” Waldo muttered, clenching his fists. The image of Catherine and Lawrence walking home from grocery shopping yesterday flashed through his mind, making his blood boil. “Don’t mention that jerk in front of me again.”
Shirley pushed a little further. “Waldo, if Catherine comes to the summit, are you going to talk to her?”
Waldo’s eyes flickered with something complicated, but he didn’t answer.
