Chapter 210
Headlights flash right at me as a car stops, blinding me. “Aeliana!” Kingston screams, his voice cutting through the brewing storm.
I see him, but I try to get up my legs give out, and my knees hit the concrete again, the sting vibrating all around my body.
King reaches me in seconds, dropping right beside me. “Aeliana,” he chokes out, his tone stressed and tired. He wraps his arms around me, pulling me against him. “What happened? I called the house, and you weren’t there.”
“I-”
I can’t answer that. I don’t want him to see me that way, I don’t want to give him something else to worry about, but it seems a little too late. “Hold me,” I choke out. It’s all I can say, all I need right now. I like Kingston’s hands, they’re the only hands I don’t think twice about touching me, hands that I don’t have to mentally prepare for before any contact. “Please-just hold me. Don’t let go.”
He doesn’t speak, he pulls me closer, holding me tightly under the pouring rain and stroking my head in what seems like muscle memory.
“I’ve got you,” he whispers, kissing the top of my head. “I’ve got you. I’m here. I’m not letting go.” he says, rocking me gently. I cry, soundless and heavy, my tears washed away by the rain.
“Siren, you’ll catch a cold.” He softly says. “We have to get you somewhere warm, you’re cold.”
“No, I’m fine,” I say, my voice so steady he wouldn’t believe the amount of tears I’m still shedding. “Just a while longer please.”
“No,” he groans. “I can’t give you any more time in the rain, we might be built for the cold, but baby, not in this form, not after sitting in the rain for over an hour.”
Over an hour?
Is that when he found out I left the house? Just how long have I been out here? And why didn’t time pass for me?
Kingston doesn’t give me time to respond, he swoops me into his arms and carries me to the car like I weigh nothing. We’re both soaked, and when he puts me in the passenger seat, I soak it immediately. He doesn’t say anything, he hops into the driver’s seat and shreds his shirt, tossing it in the back.
The car is warm, and silent, so silent I can practically hear his thoughts and all the ways he plans on scolding me. I spent the ride thinking of a good explanation now that I’m grounded.
When we finally reach the house, he carries me straight upstairs. The bedroom is dark and quiet. He sets me on the edge of the bed, dries my hair with a towel and helps me change into dry clothes, only then does he start nagging. “What happened?” He asks, his tone calm, but I can tell he’s struggling to keep his cool. I’m fully aware of what happened.
“I wanted to come home,” I swallow.
“You wanted to-” he pauses, staring at me in disbelief. “Aeliana, what the hell were you thinking? Running out into the rain like that, you left the house without telling anyone, you didn’t call for a rental, you just up and left in the middle of the night. Had I not felt the bond mark flicker, I wouldn’t have guessed something was wrong.”
“Sorry.”
“Sorry?” He echoes, “Do you know what hell I’ve been through looking for you? I didn’t know where to look,
