Chapter 218
ROWAN
The last person I expect to see when I arrive home is Noah, rolling a blunt with undisturbed precision. My heart skips a beat, prepared for the stress I’m about to endure from interacting with her. She appears focused on her blunt. I dare not disturb her, I keep moving slowly and purposefully, heading for the staircase, I don’t think she notices me until I take my first step.
“That’s rude,” I hear her say. “Come and say hello to me, Rowan.”
Rowan. Not sidekick.
I turn, my eyes meeting hers with a polite smile. “Good evening, Noah.”
“Come sit,” she orders, taking a whiff of her cigarette. When I don’t move, she frowns, staring at me like she’s about to scold me for something I fear I may have done.
I move cautiously, joining her on the far end of the two-seater. She doesn’t speak, she stays watching me. “Going out?”
“Staying the night,” she says, blowing smoke halos in the most effortless display I’ve ever seen.
I take a quick glance at my watch, Noah is a night owl, so this surprises me “Really?”
She nods, passing me the blunt. I initially want to decline, but she’s staring again. There’s something
uncomfortable about her stare, something familiar. “Your friend fucked up, so we’re back early from the club.” She sighs.
“Kingston?”
“Yes,” she nods. “He was at Rivers earlier tonight, and while I was praising him to my Ellie, he was going behind her back to suck Blondie’s face.”
“I’m not following….Kingston kissed Audrey in front of Aeliana?”
She shakes her head, “He didn’t know she was there, and before you give me all that it’s not what it looks like crap in solidarity to him, I don’t believe it.” She says, “And if my Ellie comes down those stairs weeping? I’m killing him.”
“And here I thought you were paying us a courtesy visit. I guess I was wrong.”
She shifts, taking her blunt away from me. Her lips curve into a teasing smile. “Why? Would you like it if I were to visit you?”
“Not me,” I clear my throat, needing the blunt more so I take it from her lips. “I mean Aeliana, is that not who you come for?”
“Admit it, sidekick,” she wiggles her eyebrows, tapping me with her foot. “You love having Noah Fren around.”
I groan, she is entertaining, but her antics are exhausting me more than they are keeping me on my toes. “I much prefer Professor Fren.”
Her smile widens, “Really?”
“Yes,” I pass her the blunt, leaning back. “She’s more mature.”
That’s all it takes for her smile to fall, “And I’m not?”

I shrug, “Debatable.”
“Well, I’m only twenty-two, big guy.” She says, doing yet another trick before she puts the cigarette out on the marble floor. “I’ve got so much responsibility already, just because I have a smart little brain, but I’m just a girl.” She pouts, “I’m trying to figure out who I am.”
“At the club?” I ask, an eyebrow raised. “In different beds?”
She gasps, blinking dramatically. “Are you slut shaming me, sidekick?”
“No, I-I..I just mean-“.
“I know,” she laughs. “And I mean what I said, sidekick. I’m trying to find myself and having a little fun while I’m at it because I only have one life.” She sighs. “I was put on this earth to enjoy it, it would be a shame and incredibly disrespectful to my parents if I wasted my life being boring, being a sad professor.”
I frown.
I thought she loved her job. “So you’re looking for joy?”
