“We did,” I snort out a laugh, bitter and broken because if I don’t laugh, I might cry like the desperate mate I’ve become. “We’ve gone back and forth for a good minute, it’s time to move on. If I can accept you’re still in love with Audrey, this would go so much smoother.”

“I can’t do that,” he snaps, his voice startling me but he adjusts it immediately. Mellowing into that softness he probably used for Audrey earlier. “Because I’m not, I told you, I’ve never been.”

“Maybe that’s what you tell yourself to keep your integrity in my eyes, but for crying out loud, Kingston.” I sigh.” Open your eyes, you love her, people don’t do what you do for her for a friend, you have some unresolved feelings for her, but you’re not going to admit it because it’ll make you disloyal to me, and that’s not your image, is it?”

“Aeliana.”

“I get it now,” I shrug. “I mean a heads up would have been nice, but I’m fine. I won’t ask you to distance yourself from her again, and don’t say anything.” I warn, heading towards the door. “I’m going to check on my Noah, then I’ll leave for the foundation. You’re welcome to stay here, but hit the shower first, I don’t want her scent in my sheets.”

“Send Calen my best.” He swallows.

I pause, “Oh, you like him now?”

“He’s a good kid,” he smiles.

I nod.

He truly is, every kid is special, but Calen? I know he’s going to be great. “Let’s hope he grows into a good honest adult too,” I tell him, leaving before he can say anything else in his favour.

Noah is asleep in her room, I write her a note and book my ride. I catch a glimpse of Kingston staring up at me from the balcony of his room, his gaze pleading. I look away before I’m running back inside and making an even bigger fool of myself.

I spend my ride looking up ways to deal with this bullshit that Kingston and Audrey keep spawning on me, and the best thing is ignorance. Ignorance is bliss, but how do I convince myself to endure? Because my head won’t let me, my emotions will fall in line very easily. I’ve had nothing for so long that I’m stupid enough to take whatever it is that is left of Kingston’s love. Duty. That’s all there is.

When I arrive at the foundation, I put a pin on my thoughts and head inside. Almost everyone is asleep, they have a very tight schedule around here. Sister Milan meets me in the hallway and guides me to the room they’re keeping Calen in. I can hear him talking to himself before I enter “Calen,” Sister Milan calls, her tone nothing short of exhausted,

Calen looks up from his drawing, his eyes lighting up when he sees me. “Luna Aeliana!”

“Hi sweetheart,” I grin, rushing to his side. He throws himself into my arms, and he melts into me. “How are you?”

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too,” I tell him. Squeezing him tighter. I have a very soft spot for this little boy, he has a certain warmth about him. I feel close to him, like I’ve known him my whole life.

“Did they call you?” He asks, smiling up at me when I finally let him go. “They didn’t let me see you, they wouldn’t call you, and they yelled at me, I broke my arm!” She says, a little too excited about it.

“Does it hurt?”

“No,” he shakes his head, staring down at the cast. “I’m a tough boy, and you’re back now.”

“I am,” I nod. “How did you hurt your arm?”
