Maddox pauses at a safe distance, sucking in a breath. “Hey.”

“How is she?”

“We’re done,” he swallows, not a single ounce of his usual playfulness visible. “But she doesn’t want to see anyone right now.”

Rowan is on the move instantly, “I’ll-”

“Wait,” Maddox grabs his arm, pulling him backwards. “Before you go in there’s something I need to tell you.”

“What’s wrong? Will she be okay?”

“Yes,” he nods. “I mean physically she’ll be good as new…” he trails off, eyes flickering between us all. “Sorry, bad joke, I’m nervous.’

“Hey tall thing, you’re a professional, so act like it okay?” Noah frowns. “We’re all worried.”

Maddox rolls his eyes at her and clears his throat before speaking. “Danielle won’t be able to have kids.”

“What?”

“She won’t be able to conceive again, and in the unlikely event that she does, it puts her at risk of losing her life and the baby.” He tells us, his voice controlled and clear, almost robotic. This is why I could never be a doctor, the expectations of composure would have been my undoing. This is his friend his best friend, and he has to stand here and tell him this news with a straight face. “There’s a one per cent chance she would carry a pup to full term, but that’s a gamble you don’t want to-”

“One?” Rowan chokes out, “Just one…”

“Yes,” Maddox slowly nods. “And the baby’s wellbeing wouldn’t be guaranteed, that baby would spend years in hospitals, dependent on machines and trust me, no matter how broken you are over this, it’s better than the fate your pup would have endured. I’m sorry, Rowan.”

He nods. “Did you tell her?”

“Yes, she asked to know before you, and she’s not taking it well.”

Rowan hesitates, his hands trembling. “Do you want me to go with you?” I quietly ask, and all he does is nod.

“This way,” Maddox says, guiding us to the room they’ve kept Danielle in. She happens to be on a different floor, and I don’t know how to explain this, but it smells like even more of a hospital here. The floor is shifters only, it smells like several ancient herbs wrapped in antiseptic and bleach. Yeah, I hate it here.

Maddox pushes open the door to Danielle’s room and inside she’s seated, propped up against pillows and having her vitals checked by a nurse while she stares at the wall.

“Babe,” Rowan calls, moving so close to him.

Her gaze snaps towards the door, eyes wide and dilated. “Please get him out of here.” She begs, nearly every machine beeping in a frenzy.

“Danielle, it’s me.” He says, getting close to her,

“Out!” She screams. “Maddox, didn’t I ask you not to bring him here please get him out?”

“Danielle-” he reaches for her, but she shakes her head.

“If you love me, you’re going to walk out right now.” She says, tears falling already. “Please Rowan, I’m not ready to face you.”

“Baby, you just went through-

“Don’t,” she pulls her arm.

Maddox grabs Rowan, practically tearing him away from Danielle “Come on, let’s leave, you’re stressing her.”

“Danielle,” Rowan says, his voice pleading but she shakes her head.

I follow behind Maddox and Rowan, stopping when I hear Dani speak. “Stay,” she says. All three of us pause, but she shakes her head. “Luna Aeliana.”

Me?

Oh God. My heart races, how do I handle this? I slowly step inside, unsure of how close I can get, but there are only two seats here, one by her and the other towards the window. I take the seat close to her. “Hey, how are you holding up?” I ask, unsure if I should smile or not.

“Great,” she says, making me realise how stupid my question is. “I lost my pup before he got a chance to grow.”

“It’s not your fault, this can happen to anyone, Dani.” I swallow. “You should let him talk to you, he’s hurting too, and he just wants to make sure you’re okay.”

“It’s my fault.”

“It’s nobody’s fault, okay?”

She sniffs, her head tilting back as she blinks the tears back. “It might not be my fault I lost the pup, but it’s mine Rowan will never be a father.”

“No.”

“Yes,” she sucks in a breath, meeting my eyes again. “I failed Luna Aeliana, how am I supposed to look at him knowing I’ll never be able to give him children? or simply a single heir?”

I shake my head.

I don’t know how to comfort her, but this could never be her fault, fate can be cruel sometimes, and it’s set its eyes on her, “That doesn’t matter to him, he loves you, he loved you before the baby, he loved you with the baby, and he will love you regardless and just wants you to be okay,” I confidently tell her. “I’ve never lost a child so I won’t sit here and lie to you about knowing how you feel because I don’t, but Rowan does, he shares your pain, if not all of it, then the important fraction of it. Please talk to him.”

“He was so excited for this baby, and I wanted to see him hold his child, but I failed.” She sniffs, “I ruined it all, my body won’t work the way it should,” she groans, hitting herself in the stomach. “How pathetic am I that I can’t carry one baby for him?”

“Danielle,” I gasp. Panic settling in, the nurse left a minute ago and I’m responsible for her in this moment. I grab both her hands, “Stop.”
