“She’s losing the baby,” he says.

“Don’t say that,” Kingston commands, as if saying it changes the reality of things, but still, even I don’t like that he says it.

“She’s not strong enough to carry it,” Rowan gulps, staring at the floor now. “Her uterus has some issues.. complications, I don’t know, but the baby won’t make it”

“Are you sure?” I ask, my voice strangled.

He nods, looking helpless. “That’s what Maddox said, he wheeled her to the emergency and asked that I wait, they are helping her now so they can-”

“She’s in great hands,” I swallow. There isn’t another ancient healer or modern medicine doctor that I would trust with my life, but Maddox.

I sit down beside him, rubbing his back. “It’s okay,” Kingston says.

“It’s really not,” his gaze snaps up. “She has been looking forward to the day we finally have our baby, she has already started preparing.” He chokes. His voice breaking. My heart sinks when I see the tears streaming down his face now. “She was having car seats made, custom penns for him to practice shifting in for the first time, and now we’re losing our baby.”

“Rowan, look at me,” Kingston says, slapping a hand on his shoulder. “You need to be strong for Danielle, you can’t break down like this, you are her strength, what will become of her?”

“Let him,” Noah says, her tone sharp. “He’s grieving, for goodness sake. That’s his baby too, we can’t overlook his grief and prioritise hers, let the man cry.” She snaps, walking away without another word.

Rowan sniffs, “I just don’t understand what happened, she’s been fine, happy, she rests, she eats well, she has given up all her bad habits…” he trails off, wiping the tears away. “She doesn’t even drink wine anymore, you know how much Dani loves her wine.”

Kingston presses a hand on his shoulder, comforting him silently. I don’t know what to say, the last few weeks have been nothing but blissful for them. Rowan has been just as excited as Danielle, but he wasn’t vocal about it, his excitement was visible in his actions. The way he was taking extra care of her, always making sure she cleared her plate at dinner.

I feel terrible. Rowan is like a brother to me, and I wish there were a way for me to comfort him, but I can’t find anything. Lost, I excuse myself from the seat, leaving with Kingston who doesn’t seem to say much either.

Noah returns a few moments later, carrying coffee. She starts with Kingston and then gives me a water before stopping right in front of Rowan. “Coffee?”

Rowan looks up, “I’ve only been here a few minutes,” he says, taking the cup from her. “And isn’t this something that is given to people who have-”

“I’m trying to be nice,” she snaps, “Give it back. I’ll drink it.” She says, reaching for the coffee cup, but Rowan pulls it away.

“I touched it already so it’s mine,” he says with a broken smile. “Aren’t those your rules?”

She nods, pouting as she settles in the seat I previously occupied. “But that only applies when I take stuff from you not the other way around.”

Rowan scoffs, half rolling his eyes. “Hypocritical.”

Noah gasps, “You’re lucky I’m feeling nice today. You can keep it, but you didn’t say thank you.”

“Oh please, how many thanks have I gotten from you?” He shoots back.

I smile, slightly relaxed. No one knows how long Danielle will be in surgery for, and having Noah here is very distracting for Rowan, I’m glad she’s here. Going back and forth with her he seems to forget his worries for a minute, maybe not forget, but focusing on the interaction is an icebreaker.

There is barely any space left so I sit in her lap, and she welcomes it, not missing a beat in calling Rowan ungrateful and how she will never share her beverage with him. Kingston makes a growling sound that cuts their bickering short. It’s not because of them but me.

“Really?” I snicker.

He glares, “What are you doing sitting on her lap?”

“So jealous,” Noah laughs.

Rowan snorts out a laugh, “Rightfully so, watch her.” He tells Kingston, taking a sip of the coffee he didn’t want.” She likes women too.”

“Hey!” Noah gasps, kicking his leg. “Stop telling my business.”

I smile at Kingston. “She’s a good distraction,” I mouth, and he simply nods in agreement.

“Women?” I feign a gasp. Of course, I know Noah has zero discrimination when it comes to who she beds as long as they’re hot enough to her. “But she likes me more, don’t you, my Noah?” I ask, purposely leaning in close, so close our lips are almost touching.
