Chapter 279
I don’t wait long, but it still feels too long for me. Rowan and I sit at the reception, waiting for the doctor to bring us news. Had it been Maddox, I would’ve been seeing her by now, but Maddox is still in surgery, and while I feel the need to pull him out and have him tend to Aeliana, I reckon his patient needs him more, and Aeliana would be upset if she learned I did that.
The doctor, whose name I’ve long forgotten comes to meet us, “Alpha.”
“How is she?” I rise, trying to count on the optimistic look on his face.
“She’s going to be fine,” he tells us. His words lift a huge weight off my shoulders, i was losing it, I had already called her Dad, and my Mom. I profusely apologised, not knowing what else to do. “She is still unconscious and slightly concussed, but we ran a few scans, and the MRI will be ready tomorrow, but the CT shows nothing of concern.” He explains, but I try to pick out the key words and focus on those. “We have an IV on her, and we’ll be monitoring her tonight as we wait for the rest of her bloodwork results. Still, rest assured, all seems well, she’ll be awake soon.”
I nod, that’s all I needed to hear. That she’s okay, that I wasn’t too late. “Take me to her.”
“Yes, Alpha, this way.”
Rowan freezes, “I’ll check on Maddox and see if he’s done.” He says.
I’ve noticed he was uncomfortable half the time we’ve been here, so I don’t push, I simply nod and gesture for the doctor to take me to my wife.
The moment I get into the room, I’m stunned. He says she’s okay, but one too many machines are beeping, all I expected was the IV drip, but she has other monitors here.
She looks tired, I don’t understand how it got so bad, how it almost took her from me. I knew she was under a lot of stress with Seraphine moving in, taking over Danielle’s duties, her recent involvement in nearly every activity the pack plans, and getting the job at VU..
Well, I thought the last one excited her, she said she had a good day, i checked with the Dean, and he said the same thing, he told me she was having a good first day, so what went wrong?
I take a seat beside her bed, taking her hand in mine. She squeezes it, holding onto me, but she doesn’t stir awake, she remains sleeping, at least it looks like she is. I want to understand her better, to help her, but I don’t know how. I realise I know nothing about panic attacks, nothing of importance.
I reach for my phone and start surfing the web, looking for answers, clues, but everything I find just breaks my heart. People can get heart attacks from panic attacks, there are a few recorded deaths to back that claim too. I’m scared for her, I take a glance at her sleeping form, swiping up with a trembling finger.
Guilt makes home in my head, slipping into my bones the more I read on about the attacks. hypersensitive nervous system. Dissociation. Seizures. Chronic stress. And several other terms I don’t fully understand, but I know are important.
The door swings open and Noah runs in, “My baby.” She gasps.
“Noah,” I frown.
“I came as soon as I heard,” she swallows. “What happened to her? Why is my Aeliana in the hospital, Alpha Kingston?” She asks, her tone accusing, threatening.
“She had a panic attack,” I say.

“Again?” Noah frowns, checking Aeliana’s monitors.
“Yeah, she’s been very stressed lately, and I guess it’s finally getting to her.”
“No, she was fine at VU.” She argues. “She was fine when she got home, she was excited to be with you, but that’s not triggering for her. So what happened?”
“What do you mean?”
“What made her go into panic mode?” She asks me, staring back at Aeliana before her eyes meet mine again. “It had been a while since she had panic attacks, but since being back here she’s on a roll.”
“A while?” I pause, my suspicions already confirmed, but I need to hear it from her best friend. I know I missed the signs, if only I had paid attention to how easily she would withdraw. Or the nights she’d wake up gasping and sweating, convincing me she was having regular nightmares. Then I would have known, but I believed her, not knowing it was always something more. “How long has this been going on?” I ask.
Noah’s eyes widen and she shakes her head, slowly stepping away. “I don’t have the permission to tell you, and if you don’t know, then there must be a reason why, and I’ve already said too much.”
Too much?
“Noah, my mate is lying in a hospital bed, concussed and unconscious because she had a panic attack.” I sigh, stating the obvious in case she missed the dire situation. “You have to-”
“I don’t have to do anything,” she snaps. “Sorry… I’ll wait outside with your Sidekick and the tall thing.” She backs away, offering me a small smile.
