Stacey invited me out tonight.

I’d been cooped up in my house every night this week, and after the mini heart attack that Aeliana gave me three days ago, I needed this. Aeliana is my only friend, the only one who knows me inside and out. The rest I simply give fractions of myself, different friends for different seasons. I learned early that I couldn’t tell my business to everyone, people would sell my secrets for money, money that I’d have given them had they simply asked. It wasn’t until I met Aeliana that I learned true unconditional friendship, and Stacey is coming close to it.

Instead of Rivers, Stacey brought me out to Ryen, one of the clubs rumoured to be owned by Alpha Kingston. I like it, Rivers is my favourite, but Ryen is more sophisticated than Rivers, the audience is mature, and it’s very private, not crowded at all. There aren’t many clubs like this, it’s perfect for unwinding, and that’s exactly what I’m doing. Sipping on Bloody Marys while swaying to the music at the bar as I flirt with the hot bartender in intervals. “Noah,” Stacey nudges me.

“Yeah?”

She leans in close, “Beta Rowan is here, but that doesn’t look like his wife.”

I turn my head the moment that I hear Rowan’s name, it doesn’t take long before I see him, my eyes scan the room, and sure enough, there he is, in a dark corner of the VIP section. “What the hell is he doing?” I frown.

There’s a woman beside him, dressed in a slutty blue leather dress that nauseates me when I take a second look at her. I plan on minding my business until she slides into his lap, that snaps something in me. “Noah,” Stacey pulls my arm when I try to leave. “What are you doing?”

“Hold my drink,” I tell her, giving her my glass. She slowly lets go of my arm, and I walk over to Rowan’s table.

When I reach them, the girl is kissing him, and he just lets her. I grab her a fistful of her hair and she gasps, “Ow!”

She screams.

I tug at the strands, using them to yank her off his lap, and throw her onto the ground. She bounces onto the floor and people gasp around us. The woman looks up at me with wide eyes. “What the hell is wrong with you, bitch?”

“Me?” I scoff, “What the hell is wrong with you taking advantage of a drunk man?”

She stands up, dusting herself off. “We are on a date!” She snaps, fuming with anger, like she doesn’t know what she’s doing wrong. “Who the hell are you?”

Date?

I turn towards Rowan, and he simply reaches for the drink on his table. “Rude,” the girl scoffs, finding her way into his lap again. “Anyway, where were we?” She giggles, throwing her arms around his neck.

Rowan’s eyes meet mine again, and I raise an eyebrow at him. “Leave,” he tells her.

She slowly gets off his lap, staring at me and then him. She doesn’t say anything, she just leaves, and I just stand there, still stunned. Is Rowan on a date? With another woman? I don’t understand.

He scoots further into the booth and nods to the space beside him. It takes me a second, but I find my way there. He gives me the glass and I down it in one go. “What?”

“I should be asking you that,” I smack his arm. “What the hell are you doing here, Rowan and where’s your wife?”

“Home,” he sighs, grabbing the whole bottle of liquor off the table.

I shake my head, “I thought you were one of the loyal ones, and yet look at you,” I frown, still in shock from what it is that i saw moments ago. “You’re out here kissing random whores. What are you even doing here?” I snap, sounding fully irritated, like it’s me that he cheated on.

He lifts his and smiles, “Drinking.” He says, bringing it to his lips.

“What happened?” My head tilts, studying him. I’ve seen this man in many moods, he’s usually composed, but right now, he looks lost, tired, and sad. I’ve never seen him sad, I could barely look at him at the hospital when Danielle lost her baby. “Did you fight with your wife?”

“My wife,” he sneers. “She’s why I’m here, she hates me now. She seems to hate me more each day since losing our baby.”

“What?”

“I couldn’t protect her and our child,” he huffs, “Had I made her go to the appointments earlier on then maybe

“No!” I swallow. “Stop right there, Sidekick. It’s not your fault, she had a miscarriage, and you have no control over these things. Fate was just cruel to you.”

“She’s devastated, Noah.” He sighs, staring into space. “She won’t even look at these days, she doesn’t let me comfort her, and it’s killing me, Noah.” He sighs, “I’m hurt too, but how do I move past this? I just want to fix this, but she won’t let me, she has already decided to push me away.”

I gulp.

My heart aches for both of them, this isn’t exactly easy. I understand both sides, but what they need is each other, no one understands what they’re going through more than they do.
