“I thought the same,” she swallows.

“Who was he with?”

“I’m not sure,” she shrugs, still acting indifferent. “She’s a stranger.”

“I see,” I nod, crossing my arms over my chest. Danielle needs to get a grip on her grieving methods. Pushing Rowan into the arms of a stranger isn’t going to help them heal. “He needs to get her to therapy.” I think out loud.

“That’s not all.” She swallows, chewing on her bottom lip. “Promise me you won’t get when I tell you.”

Get mad?

Why would I get mad about anything that Rowan does? I would disapprove, but getting mad at him for having a date is a little odd, even if we are friends. “Noah, stop stalling.”

“I kissed Rowan,” she blurts out, slapping her hands over her mouth the second the words are out.

I pause, unsure if I heard her correctly. “What did you say?”

“I mean he kissed me,” she swallows, turning red again. “Then I kissed him back.”

“My Noah, what?” I gasp. “I…what?”

“I know,” she winces. “I pulled back, and I drove him home, but he kissed me again outside…in the car, and when I said he was drunk, he denied it and claimed he had been wanting to kiss me for a long time.”

Again, I gasp. “Rowan?” Unable to fathom what she just told me, Rowan loves his mate, he’s always been loyal, hé doesn’t even look at other women…at least I thought he didn’t, but now? I’m questioning everything. The universe seems to be in some sort of imbalance, and we’re caught in it.

“Yes, he caught me off guard too but when we kissed, something happened Ellie.”

“What happened?” I lean forward, brushing my hand over her hair to help her calm down. “Did he…” I can’t even bring myself to ask, I know Rowan would never hurt her, but I also know he’d never cheat on Danielle.

“No,” she shakes her head. “He kept his hands at a very respectful distance, but I still felt something.”

“Oh no.” I sigh. “Don’t do this.”

“I feel so bad,” she swallows, still blushing but I can see the regret in her eyes it’s not full, but it’s there. “But he kissed me, my Ellie, and I think I more than like Rowan.”

That confession doesn’t shock me, I knew she liked him. She likes many men and women, but it never goes anywhere, and what she feels for him has seemed like a harmless crush to me, that’s why we never spoke of it. “ Noah, Rowan is married.” I remind her, “He and his wife are going through a rough patch, but they’ll get back together, he loves her, and you’ll end up hurt.”

Her face falls, and she swallows. “She asked for an open marriage so we didn’t do anything wrong, right?”

“No, but don’t get involved in that mess, I’m serious, don’t let him kiss you again,” I tell her, but she doesn’t appear to be listening to a word I say. I tap her hand, “Noah, I’m talking to you.”

She nods hastily, “Yes.”

“I’m serious,” I sigh. “Don’t blush about this.”
