When I finally return to the car, Aeliana is in the driver’s seat, she’s also done with her drink, and snacking on a lollipop I didn’t know was in here. “Hey, baby,” I smile, settling in the passenger seat.
She pauses, “You took forever, what is going on? What did she tell you?”
“A bunch of nonsense,” I snicker, forcing a smile. I may have overreacted a little bit with the doctor, but she wasn’t thinking clearly either. She asked me to stop fucking my wife, the very one she suggests is using sex as a coping mechanism. It’s a perfectly healthy one too.
Her eyes light up at my comment. “So, does that mean I can finally quit?”
“No. You’ll see this through, Ellie you have to.”
“I have to?” Her smile falls.
“Yes,” I nod, watching her. I’ve seen her lifeless twice too many times and I’m not ready for a third, I’m not ready for a final either. “You’re a strong woman, you can do this, baby.”
She smiles again, “Because I draw my strength from you.”
“Funny, I get mine from you too.”
She takes the sweet out of her mouth and puts it in mine, winking when I don’t protest. “So, where shall I drop you off, husband?”
“Home,” I say. “Unless you’d like to go somewhere first.”
“I have a class at VU,” she says, putting the car in drive. I sit back, looking for the best way to tell her she’s not going to VU this week, I made sure of it.
“Noah called when you were with the doctor,” I tell her, which she in fact did. “There are no students on campus, some pipes exploded, and rather than moving schedules around, management decided the school should be closed today, tomorrow, and Thursday.”
“Oh,” she quietly says, keeping her eyes on the road. “So that means I don’t have work until next week.”
“That means I get to enjoy my wife’s company,” I say, squeezing her thigh.
Her lips pull into a smile, “We should grab lunch before you go, you have work to do, right?”
“Not really,” I shrug, trying to sound casual. “I’m all yours.”
“King,” Aeliana whines. “You’ve spent enough time with me, you need to get back to work. I’m fine now, that won’t happen again.”
My heart starts hammering in my chest, there’s no knowing for certain, even while she’s in therapy. It doesn’t take one session to help, “How sure are you?”
“Because..” she trails off, huffing in frustration. “I just know. I’m getting help like you wanted, so I’ll be okay by myself. I won’t break just because you’re not with me for five minutes or an hour.”
“A lot can happen in five minutes,” I murmur. “I was with you at the time, but I looked away for less than a minute, and you passed out.”
“That’s not going to happen again,” her eyes shift, staring at me with concern, guilt, and something more. “I promise, I’ll handle it better. Come on, we can’t do this forever,” she sighs. “Kingston, I love being with you every

single moment too, but let’s put a handle on this, yeah? What will it take because it pipes at VU won’t burst twice.” I pause, taken aback, I had a foolproof plan, I thought the whole school and not just her department being on break this week wouldn’t raise any red flags, but of course, she caught on. Smart girl. “So, what next? A fire?” She snorts.
“That can be arranged,” I nod. It sounds like a decent enough idea, and I have no problem paying to have VU renovated.
“Kingston,” she warns, her grip on the steering wheel tightening. She’s not just frustrated anymore, she’s angry.
“Im sorry, Aeli,” I say with a sigh. Not in the least regretful about the mess I caused at VU. “I just want to be there when you need me.”
