There’s something odd going on between Aeliana and Kingston, they arrived quite early for the meeting, but they’ve kept to themselves. They’ve been out back the whole time, and something in my Son’s demeanour is raising concern. He appears to be angry about something, and Aeliana appears troubled.

When they arrived, the first thing I noticed was Aeliana’s hands, and their response was different. Kingston said it was a kitchen accident, and she said it was a training accident. Her response would have been quite believable had Kingston not mentioned the kitchen, because I have known her long enough to know how clueless my daughter is in the kitchen. She can barely locate certain items when in the kitchen. They avoided me after that, both of them sitting out on the back patio, where Vittoria has been making her art project all morning. But I can tell it isn’t each other they’re mad at, they’ve been glued together.

When everyone has arrived, I go to fetch them, “Hey, it’s time for the meeting.”

Kingston rises promptly, and so does Aeliana, but she doesn’t get to fully stand upright. “Stay.” He says, his tone authoritative, too authoritative.

“Excuse you, Kingston.” I frown, my eyes shifting between them. “Who are you talking to like that?”

“Sorry, Mom,” he sighs, massaging his temples and briefly glancing at Aeliana to see if he startled her just like he did me. “I simply meant to ask that she stay right here, we’ll find her when it’s over.”

“Why?” I frown. Aeliana is required to be present at meetings with the old and new generation pack council. “She needs to be there, it’s more than just pack matters,” I remind him. This meeting was called thanks to him allegedly hitting Gamma Hartley. “It’s family, now.”

She can’t be there,” he insists. “I know what it is, and there’s no need to stress her with any of it.”

Aeliana rises, “I’m fine, King. I can handle it.”

“No, stay out here.” He warns, helping her settle back down. “I’ve got this, okay? Stay here and criticise Tori’s painting.”

She nods, her posture a little too rigid. “What is going on between you two?”

“Nothing, we should get going Mom.” He says, hooking his arm in mine. He turns to Vittoria just as we leave. ” You, keep your sister–in–law company.”

“She scolds me,” Vittoria whines.

“It was one time, Vittoria,” Aeliana says with a soft laugh. “And your sculpture looks good.”

She shrugs. “Fine, I’ll sit with her until I get bored or whatever.”

I take my seat beside the empty one I specially asked they leave empty for Aeliana, and Kingston takes his seat at the head of the table.
