Chapter 2
My ears rang, and it took a long time to find my voice.
“So…you agreed?”
Kenneth sighed.
“Angelique, Cathy may not be your blood sister, but after your parents adopted her, she became family.
“It’s only to cheer her up. Once she’s discharged, I’ll still be your husband, and you will always be Lena’s mother.”
Before I could respond, Lenora chimed in, “Yeah, Mom. Cathy’s been really sad lately. You should try to understand her!”
I looked at the two of them-the man I had loved for years and the child I had raised with everything I had
I had never wronged them. As a daughter, a wife, and a mother, I had done my best and given my
all.
And in return, I received betrayal.
But it didn’t matter anymore. If Catherine wanted everything, she could have it.
I didn’t want anything now.
I lifted my head and met Kenneth’s eyes. “All right. I agree.”
A flicker of surprise crossed his gaze. “Really?”
He immediately pulled a divorce agreement from the drawer and set it on the table.
I almost laughed.
In my heart, I wondered, “Kenneth, please. Couldn’t you even pretend to hesitate?
I picked up the pen and signed quickly.
Relief flooded his features. He looked at me with solemn tenderness.

“Angic, once Cathy’s discharged, we’ll remarry. I promise you-I’ll never let you down.”
He signed as well, then looked at me with a sigh.

“You’ve become so much more mature, Angie. I wasn’t always fair to you before. That was my
fault.
“Once Cathy recovers, I’ll never let you worry about anything again.”
“Yes, Mom!” Lenora added eagerly.
“I’m really proud of you for being so kind to Cathy!”
Looking at them, my heart felt like cold ash.
Until that moment, I’d still clung to a sliver of hope for Kenneth and Lenora.
Now I knew better.
There was nothing left to expect from this life but its ending.
I stood, intending to go back to my room to rest.
But when I passed them, the world tilted sharply. Darkness rushed in, and I collapsed.
In the split second before the world went dark, I saw Kenneth’s panicked face.
I was woken by a biting chill.
When I opened my eyes, I was still lying on the floor.
Kenneth and Lenora were standing over me, looking down with expressions of deep disappointment.
“See, Daddy? I told you she was faking it!” Lenora said.
“Mommy, can you stop being so childish? You’re delaying us from going to the hospital to see Cathy!” she continued.
Faking it?
Kenneth spoke, his voice heavy with letdown. “Angelique, can you stop this nonsense?
“I told you, even though we’re divorced, you’re the one I love. There’s no need to use these immature tricks to test me.”

Listening to him, I finally understood.
The painkillers I took were designed to mask all symptoms for three days.
During this time, I would look perfectly healthy.
But the side effects were lethal. After those three days, my organs would simply fail.
The medicine was working even better than I expected.
I forced myself to stand. “It was probably just low blood sugar. It’s fine.”
“I’ll go to the hospital with you,” I said. “There are more transfer documents that need Catherine’s signature.”
Kenneth nodded. He didn’t look surprised at all; my parents must have told him ahead of time.
When we arrived at the hospital, Catherine was watching TV.
“Angie, you’re here!” Her face was still pale, but she looked energetic.
I didn’t miss the smug triumph in her eyes.
“Angie, thank you for trusting me with your business. I won’t let you down!” she said.
“That’s right, Angie,” my mother added with a smile.
“With Cathy managing things, you can just stay home and collect the profits. Isn’t that wonderful?”
I pulled the remaining documents from my bag. “In that case, let’s have her manage all of my assets under my name as well.
“That way,
I won’t have to worry about anything ever again.”
Everyone in the room froze in stunned silence.
