Sierra’s voice carried that pleading tone again.
Jane stood there in a daze, staring into Sierra’s eyes.
She had no idea why, but she could see a deep sadness in Sierra’s gaze.
“For Lucky, for my daughter.” Jane kept replaying Sierra’s words in her mind.

She glanced at Lucky, who was sticking its tongue out at her, trying so hard to get her attention, and then at her daughter, terrified, but stubbornly refusing to cry. In that instant, it felt like a bolt of lightning had struck her.
In that moment, she realized just how wrong she’d been.
‘All that talk about staying for the kids, about not fighting back or leaving. I’ve just been using them as an excuse, Jane thought bitterly. “That’s a lie. That’s not it at all.
‘I’m just a coward. Soren’s endless gaslighting and beatings have slowly erased who I am. My daughter is already seven, and still living every day in fear of her abusive father.
‘Even Lucky knows how to stand up and protect. But I just keep cowering, retreating into my shell, dodging Soren’s violence again and again, and always finding new excuses for him.
‘I’ve never truly protected my daughter. Instead, those excuses have trapped her in that shadowy, toxic home, forcing her to grow up watching her mother get beaten over and over.”
Sierra’s words landed like a punch to the gut, smashing her soul to pieces.
Jane took a deep breath.
For the first time, she truly looked at Soren in his eyes.
Back then, Soren came off as this gentle, honest guy. She really thought she’d found her soulmate, so she had a kid for love.
But it all went downhill fast. Soren’s job sucked, and soon he started drinking, smoking, and gambling, and then came the beatings.
She kept getting hurt and kept forgiving him, stuck in the same miserable loop.
She finally realized she was the weakest one in this family all along.
As that thought hit her, tears streamed down Jane’s face.
She fixed her gaze on Soren, unwavering. The man standing before her looked so frail, like he’d just blow away in the wind.
She shouted, almost hysterical, “We’re getting divorced. Right now! I’m calling the police. I’m pressing charges for assault. 1 won’t ever let you control me again.
“Maybe my parents never cared about me, but that doesn’t mean I’m worthless. I can take care of Lucky and my daughter all by myself. You belong in the gutter with the rats!”
Sierra’s words were a wake-up call, shaking Jane to her core.
Jane knew deep down that if she stayed here, Soren would end up killing Lucky, and her daughter would be stuck in this messed-up family for the rest of her life.
Her own life had been miserable enough. The only thing she could do now was leave this toxic home and make sure her

Soren’s chest was on fire with pain, and blood gushed from the two puncture wounds on his leg where the dog had bitten him.
He stared at Jane in disbelief. He thought she’d gone completely mad.
People in the restaurant had already started calling the cops.
In the middle of all the chaos, the police arrived.
Before Soren could say a word, Jane, her eyes blazing with tears, blurted out, “Officer, I need to report him. He’s been abusing me for years!”
In the police lobby, Yara Young. Jane’s daughter, sat on Sierra’s lap, facing a female cop in uniform across the table.
Yara might’ve been young, but her voice was clear and steady as she laid out everything Soren had done, all the years of abuse, without missing a single detail.
When she finished, she reached over and gave Lucky a pat on the head, her voice still sweet and innocent. “Lucky’s a really good dog.
“Whenever Dad hits us, Lucky always tries to help. Last week, after Mom went out, Lucky left a bunch of bite marks on Dad.
“Dad got super mad and said he was gonna kill Lucky and cook him for dinner. I was scared Dad would hurt Lucky, so I hid it. When Dad found out, he started hitting me instead.
“But I wasn’t afraid, not even a little. I told Mom everything, and she tried to send Lucky away, but Lucky just found its way back home.”
Yara looked up at Sierra, her voice soft and careful. “Sierra, Mom watches your livestreams all the time.
“She saw you take in lots of stray cats and dogs, so she wanted to send Lucky to you. Mom said you’re the only one who can save Lucky.”
Yara was sharp for her age.
Growing up in a messed-up family like this, she was way more mature than other kids.
She didn’t know what “guilt-tripping” was, but she could tell Sierra and her crew hadn’t been happy when her mom tried to give Lucky away before.
Now that everyone was helping them, Yara just didn’t want Sierra and her friends to think badly of her mom.
Yara hesitated and then said softly, “Sierra, please don’t be mad at my mom, okay?”
Sierra looked down, her gaze soft and full of warmth as she watched Yara. Her expression melted with tenderness, and she simply nodded. “Okay.”
Yara couldn’t help but smile.
For as long as she could remember, she’d never felt lucky.
But after meeting Sierra, it was like everything started going her way.
Now, her mom wouldn’t get hurt anymore, her dad would be out of her life, Lucky would be safe, and she could finally jus
be a normal kid.

Chapter 103
Yara clutched the bread Sophie had bought, her litile head swaying from side to side as she chomped down on it. It might’ve been just a bread, but to Yara, it was a feast fit for a queen.
They waited outside the lobby, and soon, Jane came out, her eyes red and puffy.
Yara and Lucky rushed over to her.
Both of them looked up at Jane, concern shining in their eyes,
Jane smiled, crouched down, and looked at the two little ones who had always been by her side. She affectionately rubbed their heads, giving them a gentle muzzle.
All that pent-up tension finally left her, and her smile grew even brighter. “Guys, we’re finally free”
The penalties for domestic violence were way too lenient nowadays.
Jane had called the police before, but even when they came to the house, all they did was try to mediate, never actually taking Soren in.
And every time, the beatings just got worse.
So even if she dragged Soren to court, he’d still walk away without paying any real price.
But she had to get divorced. She wanted to build a life with Yara and Lucky.
But as soon as Jane breathed a sigh of relief, she suddenly felt lost.
Things had gotten so bad between her and Soren, and there was no way she could ever go back home. She’d barely worked since Yara was born, and now she was pretty much broke.
Just as she was lost in thought, a bright yellow card suddenly appeared in front of her.
Jane looked up and saw Sierra, holding a cute business card covered in animal illustrations. The name on it read: WonderWild Zoo.
“If you don’t have a job right now, you could always join us at the zoo,” Sierra said gently. “It’s not a huge salary, but it’ll be more than enough for you, Lucky, and Yara to get by.”
Sierra gave her a moment to think, and then added, “If you decide, just come to WonderWild Zoo tomorrow and show this card to Ryan, one of the security guys. He’ll let me know you’re here.”
With that, Sierra left with the others.
Jane stared at the golden card, opened her mouth, but couldn’t get any words out, just watching as Sierra vanished into the lobby of the police station.

The next day, while Jane was reporting for her first day at the zoo, Sierra noticed she was trending online.
Over the past few months, her popularity had rivaled that of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry. Even her livestreams frequently made it onto the trending list.
But compared to before, she was getting a lot less hate.
Plenty of people had-recorded videos at the restaurant yesterday, and the topic of domestic violence was always controversial.
Overnight, the buzz on Twitter shot straight to the top of the trending list. When people saw Soren getting smacked, they were cheering!
[That’s Sierra for you. If she can solve it with her fists, she won’t waste time talking.]
[Sadly, stats show women go through domestic violence an average of 35 times before they call the cops. That means a lot of women spend their whole lives suffering in silence.]
[Good thing the mom in the video finally stood up for herself. Otherwise, her daughter would’ve ended up like me, stuck forever in the shadow of her father’s abuse.]
[The daughter and the dog did great, too. They were both protecting their mom.]
[For Lucky, for your daughter, you gotta stay strong and fight for yourself!]
Sierra scrolled through the comments and liked it.
Just then, Ryan called.
Ryan sounded super excited. “Sierra, there’s a woman named Jane who showed up with your card, asking for a job, and she’s got her kid and a dog with her!”
Ryan was Sierra’s number one fan. He was always on top of everything about her, no matter how small.
So, when Jane showed up, he recognized her instantly and didn’t bother to double-check before calling Sierra.
Ten minutes later, Sierra rode her electric scooter out of the zoo.
After everything that happened yesterday, Jane probably hadn’t slept a wink. Dark circles hung under her eyes, but when she saw Sierra, her eyes sparkled with hope.
“Ms. Sterling!” Jane called out.
Sierra nodded and glanced at Yara and Lucky.
Both of them were flashing toothy grins, eyes squinting with joy.
Honestly, they could be twins.
Seeing her mom too shy to speak up, Yara shook her head like a little grown-up and stepped forward. “Sierra, my mom wants to work at the zoo, but she’s too embarrassed to ask if you provide food and a place to stay.
“She doesn’t have any money left.”
Yara was such a little smarty pants.
