Seeing Sierra’s expressionless face, Sharon was freaking out inside, apologizing nonstop.

Natalie, watching from the side, was so furious that she could grind her back teeth to dust.

This was nothing like what she’d imagined.

‘Shouldn’t the Sterlings be mad at Sierra for making a scene?’ Natalie thought. ‘Why is only Jimmy the one getting angry?’

Natalie felt like something was slipping through her fingers, spiraling out of her control.

Panicked, she happened to lock eyes with Jonathan.

Jonathan’s gaze stayed gentle, but there was a hint of accusation in his voice. “Nat, Mom doesn’t really get how things work in showbiz. Was it you who put this idea in her head?”

Natalie went pale as a ghost.

‘I’m screwed!’ she thought.

“I…” she stammered.

Jonathan didn’t need her to explain. He already got it. His eyes were full of disappointment. “Nat, you work in showbiz, too. You should know exactly how much mess this would land Sierra in!”

Natalie blurted out, her voice shaking, “It’s not like that!”

She was totally freaking out, shaking her head and babbling, “Jon, I busted my ass to get this opportunity and gave it to Sierra! I thought she left showbiz because of me. I didn’t expect Sierra to turn it down!”

Jonathan frowned, looking torn. He couldn’t tell if she was telling the truth or just making excuses.

The wildlife rescue team found themselves frowning at the whole scene.

Sierra rarely ever mentioned her family. Everyone just knew things were rocky between her and her folks, but nobody thought it was this messed up.

They always played favorites, and they treated Sierra like she was their enemy. The Sterlings didn’t have to shower her with love, but everyone was shocked that they would make her the target of all their hate.

If the members of the wildlife rescue team hadn’t known any better, they’d think Sierra had done something seriously messed up.

Timothy watched Natalie put on her little act and rolled his eyes hard. “Give Sierra your resources? Please.

“You not stealing her gigs is already a miracle, and now you expect us to believe you handed her one? That’s like a fox wishing a chicken Happy New Year. Nobody’s buying your act!”

Sharon jumped in to defend Natalie without thinking. “No, that’s not it! I actually checked out this show. Legend of Harmony is a huge production, and Brock has made tons of hits. If Sierra takes the role, she’ll totally be back in the spotlight!”

Sierra listened to Sharon’s anxious rambling and finally snorted with a sarcastic laugh.

Sharon had no clue what Sierra was laughing about, her eyes full of confusion and uncertainty.

Sierra sneered, “So you just went ahead and signed the contract for me without even asking what I wanted? Tell me, Mrs.

In her previous life, she actually had some history with this director.

Back when she was a sophomore in college and her career was just starting to rise, Brock personally emailed her company to invite her to play a role.

After she passed the audition and joined the crew, it wasn’t even two weeks before all work was put on hold.

Because the lead actress had suddenly jumped off a building.

If she’d known Brock was that kind of guy, there was no way she would’ve set Sierra up for something so dangerous!

But no matter what she said, there was nothing in Sierra’s eyes but suspicion and outright disgust.

That look stabbed right through Sharon’s heart.

Natalie was freaking out too, blurting out, “I had no idea things would get this bad, Sierra. Please, don’t blame Mom, okay? She didn’t do it on purpose.”

Sharon opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but with Natalie jumping in to defend her, she was totally at a loss for words.

“So, this was all Mrs. Sterling’s idea,” Sierra said with a bitter laugh. “Honestly, I never had any deep grudge against you. I just can’t believe you’d actually do something like this to me.”

Sharon’s face turned even paler, panic flashing in her eyes as she shook her head. “No, that’s not it! Sierra, you’re my own flesh and blood! How could I ever hurt you?”

Sharon sobbed, her voice trembling. “I swear, I just wanted to help you. That’s all I ever wanted!”

The moment those words left her mouth, all the hushed whispers in the hall vanished. Everyone went dead silent.

Sharon realized what she’d just said, her words dying in her throat.

Jonathan and Shawn stayed frozen, but Natalie’s eyes went wide in disbelief as she stared at Sharon.

Sharon never could’ve imagined that one careless slip from her would blow the lid off the truth about her and Sierra’s backgrounds.

She didn’t dare look at anyone, but her sharp ears caught the sound of people sucking in their breath all around the room.

And to make things worse, the whole thing was still being broadcast live!

‘Oh, no, Natalie thought, panic flooding her mind. ‘Everything’s over!’

Meanwhile, Sierra just stood there, totally unmoved by Sharon’s confession. Instead, she gave everyone a look that was pure mockery, her eyes practically screaming contempt.

Next to Sierra, Ethan and the rest, after getting over the shock, were now just straight-up furious.

Ethan shot Sharon a cold look. “Mrs. Sterling, if I’m not mistaken, you, your husband, and your two sons all posted online that Sierra was just the adopted kid, right?”

Timothy snorted, full of contempt. “No wonder Sierra would rather die than set foot in that house again. What’s there to miss?

“That so-called family of yours is a joke. Her dad’s not a real dad, mom’s not a real mom, and the brothers aren’t even brothers!

“You treat pearls like pebbles and worship filth like treasure. Seriously, you people must be blind!”

Alex gave Sierra a look full of sympathy, then pushed up his glasses and stared down the Sterlings. “Just wait. You guys are about to crash and burn.”

Mark, usually the calmest guy around, couldn’t hold it in anymore. His face twisted with anger. “You’re all a bunch of blind pigs. Good thing Sierra bailed. If she’d stuck around with you lot, who knows what kind of hell she’d have gone through?”

Sophie was the only one who stayed silent.

She already knew how she’d report this to the higher-ups. And Elliot didn’t know about this yet. She could imagine what he would think if he found out.

Sophie gave the Sterlings a look that was pure ice.

Seeing all her friends step up and stand in front of her, speaking out on her behalf, Sierra couldn’t pretend she wasn’t

moved.

In her previous life, she was always completely alone, not even knowing who would claim her body after she died.

This time around, she had so many people by her side. Even though she kept her feelings locked up and had no clue how to let them out, her friends still stood up for her.

Her eyes started to sting, tears glimmering around her lashes, stubbornly refusing to fall.

Sierra stared down the Sterlings, her voice cold and commanding. “I don’t care if Mrs. Sterling and Ms. Natalie Sterling did this on purpose or by accident. Since you both admitted to it, you can deal with the legal fallout yourselves.”

“Let’s go,” she said, and then was about to leave.

But just as she turned to leave, Sierra suddenly remembered something and spun back around. “Oh, Mrs. Sterling.”

Sharon snapped her head up, looking totally shell-shocked, her eyes glued to Sierra, anxious and desperate.

Before Sharon could get a word out, Sierra cut her off. “From the moment I walked out of the Sterling residence, I was done with you all. So, from now on, just keep pretending I don’t exist, just like you always did.

“Honestly, just thinking about being connected to you makes me feel filthy.”
