In this not-so-big, not-so-small cellar, there were actually more than a dozen women locked up. There were kids, students. and grown women. When they heard the commotion, everyone turned to look at once.
When they saw the gash on Sierra’s head and how tightly she was tied up, their expressions shifted.
A little girl, about six years old, blinked and climbed off the lap of a high school girl. Tilting her head, she looked at Sierra and said, “Sierra, how did you end up here? I’ve seen you on TV, and my mom buys your pictures.”
After she spoke, the little girl fiddled with the ropes around Sierra, trying to help her get free.
Seeing this, the other women finally snapped out of their daze and hurried over to help untie Sierra.
With the blood flowing back into her hands and feet, Sierra felt a wave of relief wash over her. Sierra hobbled over and slowly sat down against the cellar wall.
“Are
you
Sierra?” the high school girl finally asked, her voice soft and cautious as she looked at Sierra. “Were you kidnapped and sold, too?”
“Kidnapped and sold?” Sierra forced a smile. “No, I was just straight-up sold.”
The girl blinked, totally thrown off by Sierra’s answer. For a second, she was completely stunned, and then tears started streaming down her face. “I really want to get out of here. I’m only sixteen. I don’t want to be married off to some fool.”
“I miss my mom…” Daisy whimpered.
The six-year-old, who’d been trying to cheer Daisy up, saw her crying and rushed over to wipe her tears. “Don’t be sad, Daisy. The cops are definitely gonna come save us.”
Daisy just broke down even more. The six-year-old had no clue what was really waiting for her.
But Daisy, already a first-year high schooler, understood all too well what fate had in store. She knew deep down that she’d probably never escape these mountains for the rest of her life.
“Don’t cry,” Sierra said, watching Daisy break down. “We can get out of here. Trust me.”
Daisy was heartbroken. “There’s no way out. I’ve been stuck here for three days. I tried to escape once, but I walked all night and didn’t see a single person, and the mountains are full of bears.
“Emory caught me and dragged me back. He said he already found a buyer for me, and I’m supposed to be married off to some thirty-year-old fool tonight…”
Daisy looked at Sierra, her lips trembling. “I never thought I’d get to meet my idol, even if it’s because I’m being sold off to some fool as a wife. Sierra, can you sign my shirt? At least I’ll have something to hold onto…”
Sierra couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. She rubbed her forehead and said, “How about I sign it for you when we’re out of here?”
After a moment, Sierra reassured her, “Trust me, we’ll be out of here tonight.”
She thought to herself, ‘By now, Mr. Monroe and the others must’ve realized I was missing last night. They probably checked the security footage and called the police as soon as they could.
‘But with no cameras nearby, it’s gonna take them some time to find me,’ Sierra mused.
As Sierra was lost in thought, her gaze drifted to the rat hole, where a rat poked its head out.

The rat squeaked. The moment their eyes met, the little rat’s eyes lit up, and it dashed toward Sierra, its tiny legs moving at lightning speed.
“Hey, you see me, human? I’m your biggest fan. Give me a smooch, will ya?” the rat squeaked, practically vibrating with excitement.
The other girls in the cellar saw this big, chubby rat burst out and instantly leapt up like their feet were on fire, shrieking and flailing as if they were doing a tap dance.
The poor rat got booted straight into the wall and was left speechless.
‘Come on, I’m adorable. What’s there to be scared of?’ the rat thought, totally baffled.
The big rat crashed into the wall, tumbled to the ground, and started crawling through the shadows, one eye locked on Sierra, the other glaring at the shrieking girls, its gaze full of resentment.
But the way it looked, all twisted and zombie-like, just made everyone freak out even harder.
A big broom slammed right into its forehead. The rat just lay there, stunned ‘What is wrong with you humans?’ the rat grumbled in its head, totally fed up.
The rat squeaked twice, kicked its legs, and felt like it was about to meet God in heaven.
Sierra suddenly spoke up, “Hold on.”
She walked over and crouched down next to the rat, grinning. “I can understand what you’re saying, and I bet you get what I’m saying too, right?”
The little rat just stared, totally baffled.
Sierra continued, “Hey, your tunnel goes outside, right? Can I ask you for a favor? Help me get a message out, will you? You’re such a cute little thing.”
‘Cute? Me?’ The rat blinked, totally caught off guard. ‘Did this gorgeous human just call me cute?’ it thought, feeling like its tiny heart was about to explode with joy.
The little rat’s whiskers twitched with excitement, and it broke into a goofy grin. “Help you? Absolutely! Not gonna lie, I’ve got pals everywhere.
“We may live underground, but we’ve got our own secret kingdom down here. Our tunnels crisscross the whole world!”
Sierra listened to the little rat go on and on, but honestly, her mind was already elsewhere, running through her own plans.
She was trying to figure out where she’d ended up. Based on the drive here, she guessed she must be over six hundred miles away. ‘No way I’m anywhere close to home now,’ Sierra thought.
Sierra leaned in close and whispered something to the little rat, they fished out a WonderWild Zoo pin from her clothes and handed it over. “This should help them know it’s from me,’ she thought.
To everyone else, it looked like Sierra had totally lost it.
But Sierra didn’t care what anyone thought. Even though she knew Ethan and Sophie would eventually find her, she figured the sooner they showed up, the better; no point risking any last-minute disasters.
After sending the rat off, Sierra turned to the stunned crowd and said, “Get some rest, everyone. We’ll be home tonight.”
With that, Sierra found a spot where she could lie down, closed her eyes, and started resting up for whatever was coming
next.

Meanwhile, Ethan, Sophie, and the crew had been on the road for over six hundred miles, chasing Sierra’s kidnappers all the way into the mountains of Genova County.
The peaks here shot straight up into the clouds, and the roads were so tight and twisty, it felt like every turn could send you tumbling off the edge.
The real problem? Nobody had a clue where the car that snatched Sierra had actually gone.
The cops pulled their cruisers over to the side of the road. Trailing right behind were the WonderWild Zoo van and a Mercedes SUV.
Elliot stepped out of the SUV, his gaze drifting to the treetops, caught between autumn and winter, dusted with sparkling snow. He couldn’t help but scowl.
He’d shown up the moment Sophie broke the news about Sierra’s disappearance. Seeing the cops pull over, he hurried out and asked Dalton, “Why’d we stop all of a sudden?”
Elliot had been driving all night, his eyes ringed with dark circles. When he got out, he looked like a gloomy wraith who’d just crawled out of hell.
Dalton glanced nervously at Elliot and explained, “There aren’t any cameras on this road, and there are three turnoffs up ahead. We…”
“Then split up and search every one of them,” Elliot snapped, his hair a mess and his temper flaring. “If we don’t have enough people, get the local cops involved. Sierra’s in real danger. What the hell are the local police even doing?”
As soon as he finished, Elliot got a solid kick right in the shin. It was Sophie.
She shot Elliot a glare. “We brought you here to help, not to cause trouble. If you want to go crazy, save it for your own living room.”
After that, Sophie turned to Dalton with a calm look. “Sorry about my brother. He’s a little impulsive sometimes. But we really don’t have enough people, and there aren’t any cameras out here.
“Plus, Genova County’s about to get hit with heavy snow. We need to find Sierra as soon as possible. Do you think we should get the local police involved?”
Elliot started to say something, but when he caught Sophie’s fierce glare, he just clamped his mouth shut and held his tongue.
Dalton shot Elliot a long look and replied, “No worries. We’ve already reached out to the local police, but it’ll take them about half an hour to get here.”
The local cops know this terrain way better than we do, so with their help, we’ll be able to move a lot quicker.
Hearing that, Elliot felt some of the tension finally ease from his chest.
He got back into the SUV, and for a moment, he just wanted to light up like Jon always did. He patted down every pocket, but there wasn’t a single cigarette or even a lighter to be found.
Elliot took a deep breath, trying to steady himself.
Just as he was about to tell Sophie he’d take a team to check out the road, he caught sight of a big, dusty gray rat right outside his window. Its fur looked greasy, its ears were huge and flappy. It was ugly as sin.
But there was one more thing. He was terrified of rats.
Elliot screamed like a banshee and accidentally smacked the windshield wipers,

The rat, clutching the token and scanning the crowd for someone as cool as itself, was just about to flash its trademark buck teeth.
‘Holy crap, the rat panicked, its mind going blank. Next thing it knew, it was airborne.
