Chapter 150

Chapter 150

The rat soared through the air in a perfect arc, launched from the windshield wiper with a loud thud. It spun ten full 360- degree rotations before finally landing on the ground.

At the same time, a flash of silver shot past Elliot’s eyes.

“Elliot, what happened?” Sophie called out. Sophie rushed over when she heard the commotion.

But Elliot didn’t say a word. He just fixed his gaze on a silver badge sitting on his car’s hood.

He rolled down the window, looked at Sophie, and asked urgently, “Sophie, did you see that rat just now?”

“What rat?” Sophie looked baffled, but then she caught sight of the badge on the hood, and her face changed. “That’s Sierra’s badge. How did it end up on your car?”

WonderWild Zoo had custom-made badges for all its employees, and each one was unique.

Like Sierra’s badge, which featured a black-and-white raccoon with the words [WonderWild Zoo] written underneath.

Elliot got out of the car again. All he could think about was that freaky rat grinning at him just now.

Elliot looked terrified. “Sophie, you won’t believe this. There was this super ugly rat crawling on my hood, and it was holding Sierra’s work badge.”

Sophie asked, “So, where’s the rat now?”

Elliot looked a little sheepish. “I… I swept it off with my windshield wipers.”

Sophie was speechless. That rat was probably Sierra’s messenger, sent to pass on a warning. But Elliot, scared out of his wits by rats, ended up launching it off the hood with his windshield wipers.

Elliot realized he might’ve just screwed things up, so he frantically scanned the area for the rat.

Finally, his eyes landed on a sapling barely knee-high, and there it was, the rat, awkwardly wedged between two branches. It looked half-dead.

Elliot quickly pulled on a pair of gloves, grabbed a stick off the ground, and poked at the rat. It was surprisingly heavy, probably from stuffing its face with snacks all day. He couldn’t hide the look of disgust on his face.

“Sophie, I found it,” Elliot called out.

Sophie fell silent, deep in thought as she stared at the rat’s limp body, unsure if it was even alive.

Elliot frowned, set the rat down on the ground, and prodded its belly with a stick.

The rat was still woozy, but when it felt like its insides were about to burst out, it snapped its eyes open.

And there was Elliot, staring down at it with those deep-set eyes, poking it with a stick. The rat shrieked.

“You menace. Are you nuts? Of all the sticks, you had to use that spicy one to poke me. What, you think I’m some street kid’s party balloon or something?” the rat complained.

The rat looked like it was about to blow a fuse from sheer rage.

“Sophie, it’s awake,” Elliot said, letting out a sigh of relief as the rat suddenly perked right up. He quickly tossed the stick aside and turned to Sophie.

But the rat just kept squeaking angrily at him. Elliot frowned, feeling like the rat was totally cussing him out.

The rat kept squeaking nonstop, and just then, Sophie walked over and held Sierra’s badge right in front of its nose. “Hey, where’s the person who gave you this badge?”

The rat’s eyes lit up when it saw Sophie. “Wait, you can understand me, too?”

But Sophie didn’t react to that and just continued, “If you know where she is, take us to her.”

The rat looked puzzled, not sure if Sophie could actually understand it or not.

Elliot looked at Sophie, then at the greasy, chubby rat, like she’d lost her mind. “Sophie, you seriously expect a rat to show us the way? Wait, you think it even gets what you’re saying?”

Before Sophie could answer, the rat bristled with indignation. “Stupid? Please, my IQ’s way higher than yours, you blockhead. Speak for yourself, moron,” the rat snapped back.

Elliot grumpily rubbed his nose. He didn’t even need to ask. He was one hundred percent sure he’d just been roasted by a

rat.

If he weren’t so worried about Sierra right now, he would’ve taught this rat a lesson himself.

But then Elliot thought back. He’d seen it was crystal clear that the rat really was clutching Sierra’s work badge. Even if this was just some clueless rodent, he had to at least try; Sierra’s safety came first, no matter how ridiculous things got.

So, Elliot switched gears fast, forcing a friendly grin. “Dumb-uh, I mean, adorable little rat, can you tell me where you got this? Maybe you could take me to the person this badge belongs to?”

The rat gave Elliot a sideways look, totally spooked. ‘Okay, this guy is exactly my type, but he acts like a complete psycho, it thought.

But then, remembering Sierra was still locked up in that cellar, the rat decided to be the bigger rodent and let it slide.

“Sierra’s trapped in the cellar. Come on, I’ll show you the way, the rat piped up. With that, the rat scurried over to a nearby hole, waving its paw for everyone to follow.

But soon enough, they ran into a major snag: the rat was all set to lead the way underground, but the humans were stuck topside.

So, everyone just exchanged blank stares, not sure what to do next.

Just then, Dalton spotted the weird scene and wandered over. When he heard about a rat showing up with Sierras work badge, supposedly asking for help, he didn’t buy it for a second,

But the moment he laid eyes on Sierra’s actual badge, he had no choice but to believe it, at least a little.

“We’ve got a tracker. Let’s slap it on the rat and see what happens,” Dalton said, heading back to his car. He came back with a tiny tracker, barely the size of a pushpin, and dropped it into Sophie’s hand.

Sophie didn’t say anything. She just headed back over, strapped the tracker onto the rat’s back, and made sure it was secure.

Elliot blinked. His brain was basically short-circuiting, but deep flown, he was convinced. This rat had totally gone supernatural.

Sure, his whole worldview had just been flipped on its head, but honestly, he was just glad things weren’t worse.

This time, he let his bodyguard drive while he kept his eyes on Dalton’s tablet.

On the screen was a 3D map of the nearby mountains, with a little red dot steadily making its way forward.

Elliot couldn’t help but mutter to himself, “Good thing this rat’s got some magic in it.”

Sophie just gave him a blank look. The wildlife rescue team in the back was just as speechless.

Sierra woke up. She had no idea how long she’d been out, but when she opened her eyes, she was still trapped down in that cellar, with nothing but a faint, lonely light for company.

“Does anyone know what time it is?” Sierra asked, looking around at the other girls in the cellar.

Daisy said, “We have no idea. Emory usually brings us food around seven at night, but he hasn’t come by yet today. After saying that, Daisy looked like she was about to cry again.

“But it should be soon,” Daisy said, biting her lip. “Sierra, after this meal, they’re gonna sell me off to that fool’s son to be his wife.

“I might end up a ruined girl for the rest of my life. Would you sign your name on me? At least then I’ll have something to hold onto.”

As soon as she finished, Daisy suddenly let out a little yelp, clutching her head and giving Sierra a pitiful, aggrieved look.

Sierra gave Daisy a gentle pat on the back. “I told you, you’ll be fine,” Sierra reassured her. “If I’ve got the timing right, my friends should be here to find me any minute now.”

‘As long as that little rat runs fast enough, everything will be fine, Sierra thought to herself.

Just as she finished speaking, the cellar door swung open. Emory came down into the cellar with dinner in hand.
