The wildlife rescue team quietly slipped down the mountain to Flora’s house, even bringing the officer in charge along for the ride.
Everyone had a few scrapes, so they helped patch each other
The officer who showed up was Marcus Mendoza, Dalton’s apprentice.
After getting a message from Ethan, Marcus sneaked over like a thief in the night.
But halfway there, a cold voice cut through the silence behind him. “Marcus, where are you headed?”
Marcus spun around to find Elliot standing there, brooding with a stormy look and a heavy air of resentment.
Elliot’s suit was rumpled, his shoes mud-stained. Marcus couldn’t help but wonder where he’d been.
Elliot’s eyes bored into him, and for a moment, Marcus felt like he was the one on the run, with Elliot as the real cop.
‘Seriously?’ Marcus thought, exasperated.
Remembering how Elliot could be loud as hell, Marcus panicked, worried someone might catch them. He hurried over, threw an arm around Elliot’s shoulder, and it stung to realize that even though Elliot was always buried in work, the guy was more ripped than Marcus.
He had plump triceps and a strong back.
Elliot suddenly swatted Marcus’s hand away.
Elliot gave him a wary look, edged away with obvious disgust, and said, “Didn’t know you were into that sort of thing.”
Marcus just stared, lost for words.
‘Shit, this is all a big misunderstanding, Marcus thought.
Marcus wanted to clear things up, but with Ethan still waiting, he just leaned in and whispered, “Keep it down, man. Don’t let anyone hear us.”
Elliot scoffed, half amused, half annoyed. “You’ve got the nerve to put your hands on me, but not the guts to own up to it? And you call yourself a cop? I’m dragging you to the team to clear this up right now.”
Marcus hurried to explain, “No, dude, it’s not what you think. I just got carried away for a second, alright? I was just appreciating you, man. I mean, come on, you’re a guy.”
Elliot just stared, totally stunned.
When Marcus saw the shock on Elliot’s face, he realized just how badly he’d been misunderstood.
He hurried to say, “Seriously, you’ve got it all wrong. Just stay quiet, okay? We don’t want the villagers overhearing.”
Marcus checked the area to make sure no one was around, then lowered his voice, “Captain Woods asked me to sneak over for a quick chat. If you’ve got something to say, save it for later, alright?”
With that, Marcus turned to leave.
Elliot hesitated for a moment, then quickly said, “Wait, is Sierra going to be there? I’m coming with you.”
Marcus gave him a look. “Why are you tagging along? You’re not even on the team.”

Chapter 156
“I’ll just put it on my tab and take the test later,” Elliot said, totally straight-faced.
Marcus rolled his eyes. “Seriously, who does that?”

Elliot shot back, “Fine, then I’ll just start yelling that you tried to grope me. Let’s see how the villagers and your team react when they find out what kind of creep you are.”
Marcus knew arguing with Elliot was pointless. Even if he was totally in the right, there was just no getting through to the
guy.
So, with a resigned sigh, he took matters into his own hands and snuck off with Elliot, looking every bit like a pair of troublemakers.
The two of them crept up to the door and gave it a quick knock.
As soon as Elliot walked in and saw Sierra’s hand all bandaged up, his eyes went wide with shock. “Sierra, what happened to you?”
‘Are you kidding me? How did she get hurt in just a few hours?’ Elliot thought, his heart racing with worry and frustration.
Elliot was ready to tear into the rest of the team for not keeping an eye on her.
But then he remembered that Sophie was the one looking after Sierra. If he started yelling at Sophie, his brother might just ship him off to dig mines for three years. And Sierra would get snatched up by some other guy while he was gone.
Then there was Ethan. He was Sierra’s senior, and they were pretty close. If Elliot went off on Ethan, it’d be like slapping Sierra right in the face.
He was a no-go.
Mark was the oldest on the team, and Sierra really respected him. Elliot couldn’t go after him either.
Alex’s leg was injured, and he looked all weak and bookish. Elliot couldn’t bring himself to yell at him, either.
‘Guess that just leaves Timothy,’ Elliot thought.
“Hey, wimp, what’s your problem?” Elliot snapped.
Timothy shot back, “Who are you calling a wimp?”
Elliot got all serious. “Don’t give me that look. I’m talking to you. Big guy like you, and you still can’t keep a girl safe? What’s your excuse?”
‘Look at Sierra. She’s a mess,’ Elliot fumed to himself.
Before anyone else could say a word, Elliot kept going, “And Sierra, come on, why didn’t you wake me up before heading out this morning? I made breakfast, eight dishes, and oatmeal.
“Do you even know how I felt when I opened the door and saw you and Sophie were both gone?”
Sierra quickly said, “No, wait, let me explain…”
When Elliot heard Sierra actually trying to explain herself, he was so happy he could’ve sprouted wings and flown away.
‘I never thought I’d be this important to Sierra.
‘She’s actually taking the time to explain something this small to me,’ Elliot thought, his heart doing somersaults.

Elliot was grinning from ear to ear inside, but on the outside, he acted all high and mighty, keeping a straight face. “No need to explain. Whatever you do, I’ll let it slide. Hey, we’re friends, aren’t we?”
As soon as he finished, Sophie gave a sarcastic laugh from the side.
She looked Elliot up and down. “Elliot, do you even hear yourself? Who said we left you out? You were out cold this morning. Sierra and I tried everything short of dumping water on you, but you just wouldn’t wake up.”
Elliot was never any good at keeping things to himself.
Sierra had actually planned to tell Elliot about it, but with how dead to the world he was, she might as well have tried banging cymbals over his head.
When Elliot heard that, it felt like his whole world just collapsed.
He didn’t doubt it for a second. Sophie never beats around the bush.
She never tries to coddle him, not her style at all.
So really, he only had himself to blame. He’d totally missed his shot to tag along with Sierra.
Elliot just stared up at the ceiling for a moment, then turned his back on everyone and went to face the wall, not saying a word.
Sierra gave him a weird look, seeing him all spaced out. “What’s up with him?” Sierra asked.
Sophie said, “Just ignore him. He’s been like that since he was a kid. Whenever something doesn’t go his way, he goes and sulks in the corner, staring at the wall. Sierra, Marcus is here, just tell him what you wanted to say.”
Sierra nodded.
She explained to Marcus about the black bear attack they went through today.
Marcus’s jaw dropped. “Are you serious?”
‘No wonder everyone’s all scraped up. Escaping from a 7-foot-tall bear? Only true national-level wildlife experts could pull that off, Marcus thought, genuinely impressed.
“That’s not the only thing I wanted to talk about,” Sierra said, her tone turning serious.
She shot Marcus a look. He was still giving her a thumbs-up, clearly impressed, but Sierra’s face was all business. “Listen, we might have to stay here for the next few days.”
“Why?” Marcus blinked, completely lost.
Sierra said, “Because I’ve got to make another trip up the mountain tomorrow.”
