Chapter 161

Chapter 161

Volicter

Inside the factory, over one hundred black bears were crammed into narrow, rusty cages. The space was so tight that they couldn’t even stretch out, forced to curl up.

Sierra cradled the black bear cub as she searched for its mother. The bear was covered in wounds of all sizes, with a gunshot wound on its hind leg. It was still out cold from the anesthesia.

The cub looked at its mother and burst into tears with a loud cry.

Sierra quickly told Alex and Timothy to take the cub outside. Then she turned to the bears in the cages and explained her purpose for coming.

The black bears, who had been aggressive when they saw humans, instantly calmed down.

Except for the newly captured mother bear, every other black bear in the factory had their vocal cords severed.

Each one had a long plastic tube jammed into their abdomen to drain bile, with the wounds around the tube oozing yellow pus. Some bears’ bellies were so badly infected that they were literally crawling with maggots.

The wildlife rescue team members were visibly shaken after inspecting the place.

No one knew how long these bears had been trapped in such hellish, inhumane conditions.

“Let’s get these bears to the nearest wildlife center first, and then we’ll figure out how to get those tubes out of them,” Sierra said.

She paused, and then looked at Marcus and Dalton. “I’m counting on you two to handle the legal investigation with the local police.”

Marcus and Dalton both nodded, saying in unison, “Don’t worry. Not a single one of these villagers will escape justice.”

Anyone who deserved the death penalty would get it, and anyone who deserved prison would be sentenced.

They weren’t about to go easy on these villagers just because they pleaded ignorance or showed remorse.

The descendants of these villagers, who built their lives on the bodies of black bears, would have to face the judgment and scorn of society every time they stepped out into the world.

All the villagers were taken away, and the black bears were rushed to the wildlife center for emergency treatment.

Thanks to Sierra’s promise, the bears remained calm and cooperative the whole way.

Once all the bears were safely moved, Sierra finally headed to the hospital and then the police station.

David had hit her over the head with a stick, but after an MRI, the doctors said it was just a mild concussion.

She was running a low fever from all the stress and exhaustion, so she got an IV at the hospital. Once she was feeling a bit better, she went to the police station with her friends to give her statement.

As soon as she arrived at the hospital, she saw the families of the women who had been kidnapped with her, all there to pick them up.

Daisy was hugging her parents, sobbing her heart out.

When she saw Sierra, Daisy jumped up. “Mom, Dad, this is Sierra, the one I told you about. If it weren’t for her, I’d probably be married off to some fool by now, and in a year, I’d have a baby. Boohoo…”

As soon as she finished, Daisy’s mom gave her a light smack on the back of the head, rolling her eyes. “Don’t say things like

that!”

Just then, a white Westie by their feet suddenly started barking.

The Westie cocked its head at Sierra, and then trotted over, barking twice. “Hey, Sierra, thanks for saving my little owner. Next time I see you, I’ll bring you a bone!”

The Westie Dash’s eyes were bright and shiny, its soft pink skin peeking out from under its fluffy, slightly curly white fur. Its pointy ears gave a little twitch.

Sierra’s mouth twitched. She glanced at Dash, then at Daisy, and asked, “So, what’s this dog’s name?”

Daisy hesitated for a moment, looking super awkward. In the end, she blurted out, “.Dash Glenn.”

The whole police station erupted in laughter.

Daisy gave Sierra a wounded look, while Sierra was trying hard not to laugh.

Luckily, after Sierra gave her an autograph, Daisy totally let it go. She grinned and said, “Honestly, I’m at the bottom of the family food chain. My parents are crazy about dogs.

“They named me Daisy, and the dog Dash. But Dash is awesome. It’s super sweet and always well-behaved.”

With that, she knelt down to give Dash a pat on the head, and then let out a sneeze.

Daisy and the other kidnapped women were finally reunited with their families, but Sierra and her crew still had to head to the wildlife center to check on the black bears.

After suffering for so long, these bears were in such bad shape that it was nearly impossible for them to ever fully recover, let alone be trained to survive in the wild again.

This place couldn’t possibly house hundreds of black bears, so Sierra had to figure out how to ship them out in groups to wildlife centers all over the country. She still had to work out placements for every single bear.

By the time Sierra finally wrapped everything up, three days had already passed.

They loaded up a group of stable bears onto trucks and sent them off to WonderWild Zoo. Just as they were about to head back, Dalton called.

“Ms. Sterling, are you free to come back to Amberty? David Sterling and Elouise Sterling have been caught,” Dalton said.
