The spotted hyena cub looked about three or four months old. Even with scarce resources around, it was still well-fed and plump.

But its backside was completely bare of fur, revealing raw, bloody flesh, and a flap of skin was dangling off.

Out in the wild, a cub like this wouldn’t stand a chance. An infected wound like that was a death sentence.

The spotted hyena alpha female said, “Sarah, look what your cub’s done!”

Sarah looked at its cub, silent for a while.

There was an uneasy peace between the spotted hyenas and cheetahs, so neither side would mess with the other.

It’d been gone for days, and aside from Bonnie taking care of everything, the spotted hyena pack probably pitched in a lot,

too.

Sarah, lost in thought, lowered its head and gazed at its cub.

The cheetah cub whimpered, sounding really upset and hurt. “Mom, the spotted hyena cub and I are friends! I just wanted to play together. I didn’t know things would turn out like this!

“I really didn’t mean it, I promise, I promise…”

The cheetah cub looked sadly at its friend.

Even though cheetahs and spotted hyenas weren’t usually friends, it had always thought of the spotted hyena cub as its friend.

It never wanted to hurt its friend.

The spotted hyena cub was barely conscious. The spotted hyena alpha female gently licked its fur, then carefully took it from the male hyena’s mouth and placed it in front of Sierra, its eyes full of desperate hope.

It said, “Please, save it. If you do, my whole pack will be loyal to you from now on.”

With those words, the alpha female softly set the cub down at Sierra’s feet.

Then it backed away a few steps, prostrating itself on the ground, its voice shaking as it begged, “Please… Save it.”

Sierra dropped to her knees right away. Seeing her move, Ethan hurried back to the car for disinfectant supplies.

Sierra took the spotted hyena cub’s temperature. “It’s running a little high, but it’s still under control. I’ll give it a shot to bring the fever down.”

As she spoke, she spread a white cloth over the grass, gently set the cub on top, slipped on a pair of medical gloves, and started examining it.

Maybe the pain was just too much. The spotted hyena, who’d been out cold, suddenly jerked awake as Sierra checked its wound, and before anyone could react, it tried to bite her hand.

Others shouted, “Sierra!”

“Don’t come any closer!” Sierra frowned, motioning for Ethan and the others to back off. She didn’t panic. She just grabbed some alcohol and cleaned out the bloody bite marks between her thumb and finger.

When she finished, she said, “I’m fine. I’ve had my shots and I’m still protected. The little guy’s just freaked out and scared of people right now, so give it some space.”

As Sierra spoke, she glanced over at the spotted hyena alpha female.

The alpha female hadn’t expected its cub to bite Sierra. Guilt was written all over its face.

It came up to Sierra, stared at the wound, and leaned in with its tongue out, as if it wanted to lick it.

But Sierra caught its muzzle with a helpless sigh. “Your Majesty, your spit isn’t magic for humans, you know. Go comfort your cub instead.”

The alpha female’s face fell a little, clearly let down.

But it gave a small nod and leaned in to gently lick its cub’s fur.

Smelling its mother’s familiar scent, the dazed spotted hyena cub instantly relaxed.

Even so, Sierra stayed sharp, keeping a close eye on things.

After all, the spotted hyena cub might be tiny, but it sure lived up to its reputation as the infamous “pro biter”.

Sierra’s injured hand trembled a little, but she kept crouched down, determined to examine the cub.

“There are maggots in the wound, the flesh is rotting, and it’s already infected,” Sierra said as she quickly grabbed some antibiotics from the medical kit and administered them to the cub.

This little one got some serious luck to have made it this far.

With the alpha female close by, the cub stayed calm while Sierra gave it the medicine, and she finally let out a relieved

breath.

Half its rear was chewed off, bone showing through the mess, and there were a few scrapes on its legs.

But bit by bit, as Sierra kept working, she started to sense that something wasn’t right.

She carefully re-examined the spotted hyena cub’s wounds, her eyes narrowing in thought, and then looked over at the cheetah cub, suspicion flickering in her gaze.

The cheetah cub cowered at Sarah’s feet, tilting its head up and crying miserably.

“Come here, kiddo,” Sierra said, waving her injured hand to call the cheetah cub over.

The cheetah cub was still crying, but Sarah and Bonnie each gave it a good kick, sending it straight to Sierra’s side.

Sarah said, “Just go over there. Be good, and no biting.”

Bonnie chimed in, “If you bite, I’ll whack you myself and let the whole spotted hyena pack chew your butt off!”

The cheetah cub felt like the sky was falling, whimpering as it dragged itself over to Sierra.

Neck hunched and moving super slow, it only took a few steps before it ended up right in front of her.

The cheetah cub looked up at Sierra, then glanced at Ethan, who towered over her, and at Sophie, who was staring it down.

Before the cheetah cub could finish, Sierra scooped it up into her arms.

Her embrace was warm, soft, and smelled nice. Her hair brushed against its fur, making it squirm from the ticklish feeling.

The next second, Sierra gently opened its jaws.

Sierra looked at the cheetah cub’s tiny baby teeth, and it finally hit her that something wasn’t right.

From the way its teeth were coming in, this little guy couldn’t be older than three months. If it managed to bite a mouse to death, that’d be impressive, especially not a spotted hyena cub that was even bigger than itself.

There was no way the cheetah cub was the one who hurt the spotted hyena cub.

After she realized this, Sierra’s eyes narrowed, her whole vibe turning serious in an instant.

She turned to the wildlife rescue team. “Come take a look at its wounds. See if you notice anything strange.”

Everyone gathered around, looking serious.

Sure enough, after checking for a while, everyone said in unison, “These wounds weren’t made by the cheetah cub!”

Seeing everyone reach the same conclusion as her, Sierra was now totally sure.

Sierra told Mark and Alex to take the spotted hyena cub to the car for oxygen, and then turned to the alpha female. “Your Majesty, you probably heard what we said earlier.

“We’re certain now. The fatal wound on your cub wasn’t caused by the cheetah cub.”

So she kept it simple. “The cheetah cub’s baby teeth aren’t even all in yet. With how bad your cub’s injuries are, there’s no way it was the cheetah cub who did this.”

“But the cheetah cub already admitted it! It said it just got carried away while playing and ended up biting my cub’s butt!” the alpha female insisted.

Sierra shook her head with a gentle smile. “But they’re still just cubs, you know? Just like human kids. Without grown-up thinking, even a few words from the adults or a little scare can make their fears spiral out of control.
