Chapter 230 Busted

Chapter 230 Busted

Half an hour later, everyone was gathered around Ryan, watching him frantically type lines of code. Their eyes were practically spinning from trying to keep up with the dizzying flurry on the screen.

Just as Ryan hit the Enter key for the last time, the colorful lines of code on the screen transformed into a web page. These were the same hospital records from the backend that Lucas had posted on social media earlier.

Ryan searched through the records; he found that Lucas had a minor illness from eight years ago, nothing else at all. Ryan spent another hour checking out the medical records of everyone named Lucas in every hospital across Thalasia, but after all that digging, he couldn’t find a single person with a case anything like Lucas’s.

Ryan said, “So Lucas never had lung cancer at all. He totally faked the whole thing!” Nobody here was stupid.

With Lucas’s cancer exposed as a lie, all those rumors are basically toast now.

Lucas used that whole ‘miraculous recovery’ story to lure tourists in and make them spend cash.

With the crowds pouring in, even the local media and documentary folks started showing up.

And all those folks claiming to be cured of every disease under the sun? Most likely, they were just actors Lucas hired to fake it for the crowd.

Honestly, the patients who came to Tiger Haven were just there to try their luck. If someone really kicked the bucket, nobody was gonna make a fuss at the haven anyway.

Still, they couldn’t figure out what that person meant when they said the tigers weren’t the same.

“Let’s sneak into Tiger Haven tonight and see for ourselves,” Ryan suggested.

Everyone had already been thinking the same thing, so they all nodded in agreement.

They stuffed themselves at the hotel, then crashed for a long afternoon nap.

At midnight, they threw on baseball caps and masks and made their way near Tiger Haven.

During the day, there were a handful of street vendors around Tiger Haven, but once closing time hit, they all packed up and

left. The place was totally deserted, felt just like the countryside back in Hustralia.

Sierra and the others hung around by the wall, with only a few weak streetlights barely lighting up the path ahead.

Timothy, ever the unlucky one, stepped right on a snake.

He freaked out and jumped straight onto Ethan’s back.

Sierra could hear the snake hissing and grumbling for a while before it finally slithered off.

Timothy whispered, almost in tears, “Sierra, what kind of snake was that? My leg feels icy cold. Did it bite me?”

Snakes were everywhere in Thalasia. If he really got bitten, he’d be in serious trouble.

Sierra replied, “It was a harmless snake. It was grumbling that you weren’t looking and stepped right on its head. Relax, it didn’t bite you.”

Timothy let out a huge sigh of relief.

He quietly slipped to the back of the group, figuring if anyone else was gonna step on a snake, it’d be them first.

But then he realized the back wasn’t exactly safe either, so he shuffled into the middle, sticking close to Sierra and clinging to her arm, staring at the ground like his life depended on it.

Sierra was speechless.

They walked around Tiger Haven until they found a spot that was dead quiet.

The place was tucked away in a dense pine stand, totally hidden from view.

The wall wasn’t all that tall, so with a little teamwork, they could easily climb over.

Tiger Haven was completely silent, and the white tiger they’d seen that morning was nowhere to be found.

They’d already gotten familiar with the layout out front during the day and had even checked out the room in the backyard, so they had no trouble finding their way around Tiger Haven.

By midnight, the keepers were all asleep, and the whole area was quiet as a grave.

Still, a few lights were on in the hallways, and every so often, a sound drifted out from the room where the keepers were resting.

They searched all around, but the tiger from the yard earlier today was nowhere to be seen.

Sierra whispered, “There are so many tigers here, and they have to be out for the visitors during the day. There’s no way they’re all hidden somewhere else. Let’s think, is there anywhere we haven’t checked yet?”

The front yard was mostly just open space and the main shrine hall. There weren’t many statues on display, and they’d already looked around inside: no sign of any tigers.

As for the backyard, there were only a few rooms, just enough space for the keepers to sleep. No way a tiger would bunk with the keepers.

They’d already checked out every inch of both the front and back. So where else could the tigers possibly be?

Sierra’s gaze turned thoughtful as she tried to piece things together.

Suddenly, it hit her. Sierra said, “Guys, I think there’s one spot we’ve totally overlooked.”

She raised her hand and pointed at the massive cattle pen behind the rooms.

According to what the keeper told them yesterday, since Tiger Haven was surrounded by mountains and farming was difficult, they started raising cattle to help the locals.

Sure enough, when they walked by earlier, they really did hear cows mooing from the barn.

They all exchanged a look, and without needing to say a thing, started making their way toward the barn together.

But when they were less than sixty-five feet away, Sophie suddenly grabbed Sierra and said to the group, “Hold up, there’s something up ahead.”

They stopped in their tracks and quickly found a place to hide themselves.

Outside the barn, one keeper was pinning down Kiki, while another had a syringe ready.

Thalasia Language wasn’t really their strong suit, and they were way too far to catch what was being said. All they could do was watch the keepers’ mouths moving in the dim light, but they couldn’t catch a single word.

But Kiki’s cries were so loud, it sounded like its wailing could’ve woken the dead.

Kiki’s sense of smell was super sharp, and it could faintly pick up Sierra’s scent.

It started struggling like crazy, wailing in terror, “Sierra, please come save me! Lucas’s a total jerk. After you left, he suddenly went nuts and started hitting me. He’s not nice at all anymore. I don’t like him anymore.

“Now he wants these keepers to kill me! Sierra, I’m so scared!

“Sierra, I know you’re close by. Please hurry and save me! I’m still young, and I don’t even have a girlfriend yet. I really don’t want to die!”

When Sierra heard the little tiger pleading for help, her heart twisted painfully.

They had to stay hidden; if they got caught now, it was game over for everyone.

But seeing Kiki in such a desperate state, Sierra just couldn’t turn a blind eye and leave it to its fate.

Sierra took a deep breath, crouched down, and picked up a pebble. Just as she was about to toss it to draw attention, Sophie suddenly grabbed her wrist.

Sierra turned to look at her.

Sophie said, “Let me do it. I’m a better shot.”

With that, Sophie took the fist-sized rock from Sierra and hurled it straight at the keeper.

With a thud, the keeper dropped to the ground.

Yep, he got knocked out cold by a rock from out of nowhere.

The other keeper snapped, “Who’s there?!”

With the keeper knocked out, Kiki finally broke free and, in a panic, dashed desperately toward the direction where it could smell Sierra, not caring about anything else.

Sierra muttered, “Sophie, I was actually just trying to toss the rock on the ground.”

They just stared at each other, totally dumbfounded, until Sophie finally said in a dry voice, “I thought you wanted to knock them out.”

Others grumbled inwardly, ‘So much for teamwork, huh?’

But now wasn’t the time to just stand there staring at each other.

They were only about sixty-five feet from the keepers, and Kiki, nose twitching, sniffed out exactly where Sierra was hiding.

As soon as it saw Sierra, Kiki broke down, sobbing so hard that it could barely breathe. It choked out, “Sierra! I thought I was a goner. You’re an angel; you saved me. From now on, I’m your tiger for life!”

With that, Kiki clambered right onto Timothy, not caring about anything else.

It wasn’t out of spite or anything. It knew just how sharp its claws were. It wanted to find someone to protect it, but didn’t want to risk scratching Sierra, so it thought, ‘If someone has to get scratched, better Timothy than Sierra.

The moment Kiki’s claws hooked onto Timothy’s pants, he let out a startled yelp.

But Kiki was totally unfazed and kept scrambling up Timothy.

When it started getting dangerously close to his sensitive area, Timothy panicked, scooped Kiki up in a flash, and yelled, flustered, “You little menace! Are you out of your mind?!”

He thought, ‘Why do all these animals always mess with me?

‘Why am I always the unlucky one?’

Timothy looked totally put out, and only after chewing out the little tiger did he realize just how loud he’d been.

He could’ve kicked himself, stammering, “I-uh, sorry, guys.”

“It’s fine,” Sierra replied.

She gently pulled Timothy and Kiki behind her, then looked at the keeper. She said to Timothy, “Even if you hadn’t said anything, they would’ve found us anyway. We are busted.”
