Beast Tamer's Rebirth National Treasure Edition novel Chapter 232

Chapter 232 Escape

Wesley seemed to know this area like the back of his hand.

He led Sierra through the streets, quickly losing the keepers, and they reached his SUV safely.

Once they were on the road, everyone finally let out a sigh of relief,

Timothy sprawled out in the back seat, looking completely drained.

Sierra glanced at Wesley behind the wheel and asked, “Wesley, I thought you were studying lions in Kenland. What are you doing in Thalasia?”

Wesley glanced at the rearview mirror and said, “Primal Pines and Wolfsbane Meadow are a mess right now. The local cops are searching for criminals, and it’s tough for a foreigner like me to get around. I keep getting stopped and questioned. “Plus, Tiger Haven’s been blowing up online lately, so I figured I’d come see it for myself.

“You guys just got here, right? I’ve been in Thalasia for a week. I came to check out Tiger Haven and planned to volunteer with elephants in Qartham, but the moment I walked in, I could tell something was weird about the tigers.

“I haven’t had a chance to look into it yet.

“I was planning to investigate today, but then I spotted your car, so I waited outside to back you guys up.”

After saying that, Wesley turned around and winked at Sierra. He tested, “Sierra, I showed up right on cue, didn’t I? Wasn’t I just like your fairy tale prince riding in to save the day?”

Sierra’s lips twitched at Wesley’s over-the-top ego.

As the SUV sped down the road, Ethan called Henry and Thomas to fill them in on what had happened.

Now that they had the cub with them, if Lucas called the cops, they’d be on the run.

There was no way they could go back to the hotel now, and for a moment, everyone was at a loss for where to go next.

“Don’t tell me you guys don’t have anywhere to stay?” Wesley said, catching Ethan on the phone with folks back home.

He offered, “I’ve got a place rented about sixty miles from here. You can crash at my place for the night. Just spend the night there and forget about everything else for now.”

Wesley didn’t bother asking what happened; one look at the cub and he pretty much figured it out.

He led everyone to a house out in the countryside.

The placé Wesley rented was pretty spacious, but honestly, it was pretty bare-bones: just a single bare bulb with a pull cord and a couple of outlets.

Wesley said, “Hope you don’t mind. I spent all my money on flights and research, so fancy hotels are out of the question. It’ s a bit remote, but the scenery’s great, and it only costs me less than a hundred bucks a month. Total bargain.”

With that, Wesley showed everyone to their rooms.

When Wesley spotted the cub in Timothy’s arms, he couldn’t hold back anymore. He asked, “With the Thalasia cops after you, have you thought about sneaking the cub back home?”

Sierra shook her head firmly and said, “No way. It’s not the right time to go back.”

She thought, ‘The mess at Tiger Haven is way too huge to just walk away from. Leaving now isn’t even an option. And if I bail, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.’

Seeing that no one from the wildlife rescue team argued, Wesley shrugged.

He said, “The Thalasia police will probably come after you guys tomorrow. At least here, we’re safe for now. Thalasia doesn’

t have cameras everywhere like Hustralia. If you need my help, just say the word.”

With that, Wesley headed for his room, calling back, “Sierra, it’s getting late. Try to get some sleep.”

Wesley figured the team had stuff to talk about, so he quietly shut his door and left them to it.

Once Wesley was in his room, the team gathered in the living room to go over everything that had happened today.

It was obvious Lucas had set them up. The way they were wandering around the haven until they found the cub: all of it was part of Lucas’s trap, just waiting for them to walk right in.

Sierra hugged Kiki and asked, “Kiki, was that barn where all the tigers were staying today?”

Kiki nodded and said, “Yep, that’s where we all stayed.”

Sierra thought, ‘Just as I suspected.

‘Seriously, if the keepers at Tiger Haven actually cared about the tigers, why would they cram them in with cows? And what kind of person kills a cub over something so petty?’

“Hey, do any of your friends have the same name?” Sierra asked.

Kiki just tilted its head at Sierra, clearly not getting it.

Before Sierra could explain, Kiki piped up, “Yeah! My dad died not long ago, so Lucas got me a new dad to look after me.”

A chill ran down Sierra’s spine.

She quickly realized something was seriously wrong. Tigers were loners by nature; no tiger would ever play babysitter for someone else’s cub, not without a reason.

Sierra thought, ‘Why are all these tigers acting so tame and well-behaved?’

“Did your dad really take care of you? Like, did he lick your fur or play with you?” Sierra asked.

Kiki nodded, its head bobbing. It said, “Yep, he did all that. My new dad is super nice, but he’s really quiet. He’s never said a single word to me!

“If he didn’t always look after me, I would’ve thought he didn’t like me at all.”

Sierra drew in a sharp breath.

She turned to Ryan and said, “Ryan, see if Tiger Haven has reported any sudden tiger deaths in the last eight years.”

Ryan was quick. After checking the records, he said, “Sierra, in the past eight years, Tiger Haven only reported five tigers dying of old age, no sudden deaths at all!”

At that moment, everyone realized just how wrong things were.

Ethan asked, “So, Tiger Haven’s pulling a switcheroo with the tigers? But if one suddenly dies, how do they even get a new one? And what happens to the ones that die?”
