Chapter 247 No One Made It Back Alive

Harold swallowed hard, sweat soaking through his shirt.

He wet his lips nervously, but his eyes soon darkened.

He retorted, “Ms. Sterling, if you think there’s something wrong with how our department operates and the Audit Team wants to investigate, we’ll cooperate.

“We’ve always played by the rules, so we’ve got nothing to hide. But if the Audit Team comes up empty-handed, what will you do then, Ms. Sterling?”

Sierra didn’t bat an eye.

“So what exactly do you want from me?” Sierra replied, totally unfazed. “You guys have to cooperate with the investigation, and I have every right to report things up the chain. That’s all there is to it.”

Sierra started heading out. “Anyway, Harold, you’d better get ready for the Audit Team. We’re heading out to sea now.”

With that, Sierra took her team and left.

Harold watched her walk away, his gaze darkening.

On the deck, the boat sounded a series of loud beeps as the engine roared to life. It slowly moved away from the shore, cruising along with the current and the engine’s power.

Sierra and the others stood on the deck.

Ryan couldn’t help but ask, still thinking about the tense exchange with Harold earlier. “Sierra, do you really think Harold’s got something shady going on?”

Sierra didn’t answer directly. “We’ll know once the Audit Team gets here.”

Ryan didn’t get a clear answer and couldn’t figure it out himself, so he scratched his head in confusion.

Seeing Ryan’s confused look, Mark explained, “Sierra’s suspicions aren’t baseless. We’ve donated over 10 million dollars in

the past few months. For Harold’s department, that’s a massive sum.”

Ryan’s eyes went wide, and he dropped his voice. “Dude, you think Harold’s skimming off the top?”

Mark shrugged. “We’ll just have to see what the Audit Team digs up.”

Right now, the top priority was to find that newborn dolphin whose jaw had been smashed by a boat propeller.

Since it was just born, the research team probably didn’t even know it existed yet, so there’s no tracker on it.

That made it super hard to find.

Sierra made her way to Leah’s home waters, but after asking everyone she could find, nobody had seen the baby dolphin whose jaw had been torn off.

Seeing Sierra’s disappointed face, Leah quickly said, “Sierra, don’t worry. I’ll ask my mom and our whole pod to help you look..

“With so many marine creatures out here, someone’s bound to spot that little dolphin.”

Finn chimed in, “Sierra, trust the orcas’ skills. They can sense dolphins even from far away.”

Sierra was silent.

The orcas scattered in all directions.

Word about the missing-jawed baby dolphin spread like wildfire through the ocean depths.

When Sierra called out who she wanted to find, her aquatic crew wouldn’t dare slack off. They’d get it done, guaranteed.

Less than an hour later, a hawksbill turtle about five feet long surfaced from the water.

The hawksbill turtle made a noticeable commotion as it came up, and since Sierra and the others had been watching the water from the deck, everyone spotted it instantly.

Everyone stared at the hawksbill turtle, not saying a word for what felt like ages..

So they just locked eyes with the turtle, wide-eyed and silent.

The hawksbill turtle mouthed slowly, finally draging ide

The stereotype was true. Turtles really did take their sweet time talking.

Seeing that, Sierra said, “The hawksbill turtle must’ve found the baby dolphin. Let’s take the yacht over and check it out.”

With that, they all suited up in their diving gear, getting ready to jump in.

Harold spotted them and called out, “Ms. Sterling, you guys diving in again?”

Sierra shot him a cold look. “Seriously, Harold, you don’t need to tag along this time. We’ve got it covered.”

With that, she headed straight into the cabin and told the crew to prep the yacht, totally ignoring Harold’s miserable expression.

Meanwhile, Sierra slipped into the water and made her way over to the hawksbill turtle.

This hawksbill was seriously massive, probably one of the biggest they had ever seen.

Looking down from the deck, they didn’t think much of its size, but once they cruised over in the yacht, they realized this turtle was nearly half the size of their boat. It was practically a sea monster.

“Sierra…” the hawksbill turtle called out to Sierra, gazing at her, its excitement clear even in its unhurried movements.

It had wanted to get close to Sierra for quite a while, but the orcas were always sticking by her side.

Orcas loved to play around with turtles, so the hawksbill never dared to approach.

But when it heard Sierra was searching for the baby dolphin without a jaw, it finally got its chance.

“I… found…” the hawksbill turtle drawled, its words stretching out painfully slow.

Halfway through, the hawksbill realized just how slow it was talking and fell silent.

Sierra quickly reached out and gave the hawksbill turtle a reassuring pat on the head. “Hawksbill, can you just take me straight to the baby dolphin? Please?”

The hawksbill might be slow to talk, but it was quick on the move. It gave a sharp nod. “Okay…”

It could see Sierra was worried, and the baby dolphin was in pretty bad shape.

The hawksbill wanted to explain how the baby dolphin was doing, but it knew it’d take ages to get the words out.

By the time it finished, they’d probably already be there. So it just shut up and led Sierra and the crew into deeper waters.

The crew members on the boat were stunned, unable to believe what they were seeing.

Even though they’d witnessed stuff like this before, it still blew their minds every single time. It was like their whole worldview was getting flipped upside down.

“Damn! Sierra’s awesome,” one of the crew members muttered.

As soon as the crew members had barely finished praising Sierra, they felt Harold’s chilling glare sweep over them. Their chatter came to an abrupt halt, and everyone immediately ducked their heads, not daring to meet Harold’s eyes. Harold always played the timid pushover whenever Sierra was around, but honestly, he was the hardest boss to work for. Even a throwaway comment could get Harold overthinking and targeting people for no reason. Plenty of folks would rather break their contracts and bail than put up with him as their manager.

Right then, Harold shot him a dark look, and the crew member’s back was instantly drenched in cold sweat.

“Awesome? Give me a break. She’s just a zoo director. If she was really all that, she’d be running the show, and I’d be the one reporting to her,” Harold sneered.

The crew member couldn’t help but roll his eyes at that.

‘When Sierra’s around, you’re scared stiff and wouldn’t dare say a word to her face. But now you’re just picking on me because you know I can’t fight back. Typical,’ he thought.

But of course, he kept his mouth shut.

“Take the boat out. Right now,” Harold suddenly barked.

The crew member snapped his head up. “Wait. What?”

Harold shot back, “Got a problem with that?”

The crew member froze, totally speechless.

He looked at the yacht with Sierra and the wildlife rescue team heading off, and stammered, “But… But…”

‘If we take off now, how the hell are Sierra and the wildlife rescue team supposed to get back?’ he wondered.

But before he could say anything, he looked up and saw the look on Harold’s face.

And just like that, it dawned on him. Harold was probably planning to make sure no one made it back alive.
