In the memorial hall of WonderWild Zoo, an eternal flame burned quietly, with staff coming by every now and then to make sure it stayed lit.

Once Sierra had finished taking care of those poor animals that had been cruelly killed, she finally found a moment to catch her breath.

Vera and Lily had added her on social media that day. Lily wasnt much of a talker, but for someone who claimed to have a sixth sense, all she ever shared on her feed were political news and current affairs.

Vera’s feed, on the other hand, was a colorful mess. Every day it was either food, fun, or cute couple photos with her husband, Philip Cooper.

One day, Elliot asked Sierra out for dinner. After they talked about the memorial rites for the animals, Sierra casually brought up Philip and Vera.

Elliot’s face instantly soured. “Vera’s been a little troublemaker since she was a kid!”

Then he started telling stories about how Vera was a total handful ever since she returned to the Summers family at three and a half, always up to some mischief and causing a ruckus.

Finally, he grumbled, “Honestly, I gotta give it to Philip. His wife always up to something wild and never acting normal, but he still thinks she’s the cutest thing ever.”

Sierra thought about Vera for a moment and said, “Honestly, Vera’s got a pretty great personality.”

“Well, she gave me plenty of trouble growing up,” Elliot admitted sounding a bit helpless. “But to be fair, Vera’s always been good to her friends. Whenever she hit me, she always held back compared to everyone else.”

Sierra was speechless.

‘Seriously, who’s the real little devil here, Elliot or Vera?’ Sierra couldn’t help but wonder.

After that, maybe Elliot was trying to get Sierra, Vera, and Lily to spend more time together, because he’d randomly set up dinners for us. Before long, the three of us were getting pretty close.

By the end of June, Pip was fully healed. A few days ago, the elephant migration team in Yondeland let Sierra know that the Monva Herd had started moving again and would be back at the spot where they’d met in just a few days.

So, even though Pip threw a huge tantrum, Sierra managed to calm it down, got it ready, and sent it back home.

Pip was the very first wild animal from WonderWild Zoo to be truly set free back into the wild.

Sierra was really reluctant to let it go. When it was time to say goodbye, she draped Pip and the Monva Herd with bunches of big bananas.

She also remembered the ball she’d promised Pip and made sure to pack it up for it, too.

Pip had gotten so much bigger, and all its baby fuzz had disappeared.

The moment it spotted its mom, Pip’s eyes went wide and it scampered over to it, its little legs moving as fast as they could.

Pip shouted, “Mom!”

‘It kept saying it didn’t want to leave the zoo, but honestly, what id doesn’t miss their mom? Sierra thought to herself.

The mother elephant leaned in close to Pip, who was now fully recovered, and trumpeted softly.

“According to the suspect, he made a deal with someone on the Darknet Animal Hub. The lion originally lived in Nymeria and was an extremely rare desert lion.

“Using the suspect’s account, we found that all the desert lions have been put up for sale on that site. The top bounty is for a female named Bessa.”

Sierra’s expression turned increasingly grim, her heart sinking with every word.

Finally, she said, “Got it.”

She hung up, her mind swirling with worry and anger.

Sierra quickly gathered everyone for an emergency meeting and filled them in on what the police had just told her.

After hearing the update, everyone immediately insisted they needed to go to Nymeria themselves and make sure Bessa was safe in the Reserve.

There were just over a hundred desert lions left in the world. It was one of the world’s most critically endangered animals.

Losing even one would be a huge blow to the whole species.

And Bessa was a female who could still have cubs, which made her even more important to the future of the desert lions.

A week after sorting out their visas, the crew loaded up with gear and hopped on a flight to the capital of Nymeria.

They landed at six in the morning local time, and with a six-hour time difference from home, everyone was still feeling a bit jet-lagged.

The moment they stepped off the plane, a blast of cold air hit them, and those who’d been wearing short sleeves quickly threw on thick sweaters.

Nymeria’s geography meant the temperature swings were no joke-freezing in the morning, scorching by afternoon.

It was just 37 F when they landed, but by the time they reached the Nymeria Desert Reserve in the southwest, it was pushing

86 F.

Because of the wild temperature swings in Nymeria, the crew made sure to bring plenty of extra clothes and gear this time.

The group booked a hotel on the edge of the reserve, and as soon as they settled in, Nymeria Desert Reserve.

Nymeria’s desert was one of the oldest on Earth, its endless dunes burning red like clotted blood beneath a sky so clear and blue that it almost hurt to look at.

At the desert’s edge, the pale blue ocean curled up in gentle waves, meeting the sand as if the sea and desert were locked in a soft embrace.

Nymeria boasted nearly a thousand miles of coastline along the sea, with its desert stretching from the border with one country all the way down to another.

There were no people around at all. At the very edge, they’d spot a few towering cacti here and there, but once they really entered the desert, it felt utterly lifeless.

Trying to find a lion in such a massive desert was no easy feat.
