Beast Tamer's Rebirth National Treasure Edition novel Chapter 256

Chapter 256

The oryx was shocked.

It knew perfectly well it shouldn’t go over there, but for some reason, it just couldn’t control its legs.

It thought, ‘Why am I hopping over to the human?’

The oryx looked like it was about to cry, but still asked, “Human did you need something from me?”

After saying that, the oryx thought to itself, complaining internally, ‘What else could they want? These humans are obviously here to catch me!’

As it spoke, the oryx’s voice started to crack, almost crying.

Sierra didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that.

“We’re not here to hurt you,” Sierra said. “Do you happen to know Bessa? Or maybe you’ve seen a female lion that looks like this one in this photo?”

All the desert lions had their photos up on the official site, but since Bessa wasn’t wearing a collar, there was no way to track it down.

When the oryx heard they weren’t here to hurt it, it let out a long sigh of relief.

It kept tilting its head, glancing at the photo of the lion several times before finally shaking its head. “Nope, I haven’t seen it before.”

Sierra didn’t seem disappointed.

After all, desert lions were never easy to track down.

Noticing Sierra and the others looking a bit let down, the oryx quickly chimed in, “But you could head over to Grave Canyon and take a look.”

“Grave Canyon?” Sierra repeated, a bit puzzled.

She thought back to all the research she’d done, but couldn’t recall ever seeing anything about Grave Canyon.

The oryx nodded. “No wonder you haven’t heard of it. It’s a name we animals made up ourselves.”

Sierra got out of the car.

The oryx just lay down on the sand and started talking. “Grave Canyon is a scary place. Humans always show up in packs. They put up fences, lock us up inside, and then climb up the dunes to start shooting at us.

“They never finish us off with the first shot. They just want to freak us out, make us run for our lives, and then pick us off one by one.

“Back when I was a kid, I watched my uncle get snatched by humans. It didn’t make it out alive.

“Some humans hunt us for our fur, but these ones? They’re different. It’s like they enjoy the thrill of hurting us, like it’s some kind of sick game.”

After Sierra heard the oryx’s story, it all clicked for Sierra. She finally got what was really going on.

In some places, people actually raised wild animals just so the wealthy elites could come over and shoot them for fun. Lions, wolves, and tigers were the ones who suffered the most.

Chapter 256

Her gaze grew serious. “Can you tell me where Grave Canyon is? Sierra asked.

“Just head straight ahead. Grave Canyon’s right between the two biggest sand dunes,” the oryx said.

The oryx suddenly realized what it had just said and gawked at serra, eyes wide with shock. “Wait, you really want to go to Grave Canyon? No way! That place is a death sentence. You’ll never make it out alive!”

Seeing Sierra and the others getting up, the oryx, desperate, grabbed onto Sierra’s sun jacket with its teeth and whined, “They don’t just kill lions and tigers.

“Those people even kill humans! Grave Canyon is littered with bones. You’re way too soft for that place. You’ll be scared out of your wits!”

Just picturing Sierra all lost and helpless made the oryx panic. “No way, I won’t let you go to Grave Canyon! And even if you do, you won’t be able to save Bessa, that desert lion.

“There’s a bunch of people out there hunting desert lions every single day. They’ve pretty much hunted every lion around here to extinction.”

Sierra’s face fell at the news.

“So you’re saying all the desert lions around here are being hunted down?” she asked, her voice tight.

“That’s right!” The oryx nodded.

“It was never this bad before, but this year, for some reason, everyone’s suddenly obsessed with hunting lions. Desert lions were rare enough already, but now they’re nearly wiped out.”

Sierra’s face changed dramatically.

According to the numbers, there were only a little over a hundred desert lions left-some privately bred, and the rest living wild.

In recent years, Sierra had barely heard any news about desert lions having new cubs.

Now, they were almost wiped out.

She thought, ‘The Darknet Animal Hub’s network is so huge and complicated. Who the hell is really running the show behind the scenes?’

Sierra’s mind was a total jumble, like a hundred tangled strings. She just couldn’t untangle any of it, no matter what.

She gently rubbed the oryx’s head. “No matter what, I have to go check it out. You take care of yourself, alright? If you spot any humans, just run as far as you can. Don’t go sticking your neck out like just now, okay?”

Her hand was unbelievably soft.

The oryx was left completely dazed, stammering, “I… I just can’t say no to you!”

This human was so mesmerizing that even if she put a knife to is throat, it’d still die for her, no questions asked.

If any other human tried to kill it, then those people had to be out of their minds.

But if it was this gorgeous human who wanted to kill it, then it must’ve messed up big time. It’d gladly die for her, no questions asked.

Sierra couldn’t help but smirk at the oryx’s words. She grabbed some fresh veggies from the car as a little treat, and then headed off toward Grave Canyon, just like the oryx had suggested.

Chapter 256

Grave Canyon was tough to find. The desert stretched on forever and they could get lost in no time.

Luckily, luck was on Sierra’s side. Oryxs and camels seemed to pop up just when she needed them, always pointing her in the right direction. Pretty much every animal out here knew about Grave Canyon.

An hour later, after driving 30 miles inland from the coast, they finally pulled up at the base of the 150-foot sand dune the oryx had talked about.

They were still more than half a mile away when a deafening gunshot echoed from Grave Canyon.

Ethan stopped the car.

Sierra and Sophie leaned out the window, one hand gripping the luggage rack on the roof, the other holding binoculars.

At the very top of the two towering sand dunes, at least a dozen bodyguards stood guard. Up front was a foreign guy in a white hat, a white polo shirt, and brown shorts, and a Valorian man.

Both of them were holding the latest sniper rifles, firing into the gap between the two natural sand dunes.

The two sand dunes were only about 65 feet apart, surrounded on all sides by metal fences 16 feet high.

Inside, around thirty wild animals heard the gunshots and tried to escape, but every direction was blocked. They tried to scale the metal fence, desperate to get out.

A fence that size wouldn’t normally stop a wild animal, but as soon as they touched the metal bars, they instantly collapsed, convulsing on the ground.

All the animals that had been frantically running around suddenly froze, standing there in shock, staring at the antelope twitching on the ground, smoke rising from its charred fur.

Before anyone could even react, another gunshot rang out.

They didn’t even have time to think. They just scrambled to escape, scattering in every direction.

Sierra peered through her binoculars at the chaos in the distance, her whole body practically radiating a cold chill.

Timothy squinted out the windshield, barely able to make out little black shapes flickering across the far-off dunes. Each gunshot sent shivers down his spine, making his skin crawl.

“Sierra, what do we do now?” Timothy asked, his voice tight with anxiety.

“We charge in,” Sierra replied, her tone icy and resolute.

“What?” Timothy’s eyes went wide. “But there are so many of them…”

“The fences trapping the wild animals are electrified,” Sierra said her voice icy and resolute. “We need to smash a gap in the fence to give these animals a shot at escaping.”

Sophie chimed in, “I’m with Sierra. I’ll take out their tires as fasts I can. Ethan, you crash into the fence. Sierra, you coordinate with the animals and lead them out to safety.”
