Chapter 257
Everyone in the car clung to the handles for dear life, but inertia still shoved their bodies forward a bit.
They all felt like their guts were doing somersaults.

Timothy rolled his eyes and panted, “Man, if I’d known it would be like this, I wouldn’t have stuffed myself at breakfast!”
Ethan shot a quick glance in the rearview mirror, tightened his grip on the wheel, shifted into reverse, and floored it. The car shot backward.
Ethan smirked and said coolly, “Cover your mouth, kid. If you throw up, I’m not cleaning it up. I’ll murder you.”
“No, I-Timothy started.
Timothy reached out a hand, but before he could say anything, Ethan slammed the car into gear and floored it again.
Timothy’s mind was just screaming, ‘Holy crap!’
Then, with a loud bang, everyone heard a nasty crunch.
The car busted a hole clean through the iron fence.
After Ethan rammed the fence a few more times, Sierra jumped out of the car and slipped through the hole. “We’re here to rescue you! Get out, now!” she yelled.
The animals hesitated for just a heartbeat, then dropped everything and sprinted straight toward Sierra.
Sierra scanned the crowd of animals, her gaze finally locking onto a lion.
“Bessa!” she called out.
Bessa, who was running for her life, heard the human who came to save her shouting her name and shot a quick look back.
But right then, gunshots rang out.
Up on the sand dunes, that foreign guy was watching them from above, lifting his gun for another shot.
Sierra’s eyes narrowed, and she yelled urgently at Bessa, “Bessa, run as far as you can! Don’t look back!”
Bessa gave Sierra a long, meaningful look, and then darted through the fence without hesitation. As she left, Sierra noticed blood trickling from Bessa’s hind leg.
‘Bessa’s hurt!’ Sierra thought, her heart clenching with worry.
But there was no time to think. Sophie, covering Sierra, yelled, sierra, get in the car, quick!”
The bodyguards were already coming their way. If those guys shot out their tires, they’d be stuck out here in the desert with
no way to escape.
Sierra didn’t even look back. She slipped through the wire fence, grabbed the roof, hauled herself up, and kicked off to dive straight into the car.
Ethan slammed his foot on the gas, ramming straight into a bodyguard who was coming right at them. Without missing a beat, he jerked the wheel and sped off, heading straight for the depths of the dunes.
The foreign guy and the Valorian guy looked absolutely furious

They started swearing right on the spot. “Pathetic! We spent a fortune on you guys, and you can’t even handle one woman!”
The Valorian guy said, “Mr. Wilk, what do we do now that they’ve escaped? If anyone finds out what’s really going on here…”
Gary Wilk shot that guy a frosty glare. “Holden, you seriously need to ask me that? The boss wanted Bessa’s pelt, and now we’ve got nothing. Worse, those Hustralians know about it.
“If the boss hears about this, do you really think we’ll walk away in one piece?”
Nymeria didn’t have nearly as many resources as Primal Pines.
Even a single desert lion skull could go for over a million bucks.
Now that Kenland was cracking down on poachers, these guys were targeting Nymeria.
After they drove off, not a single smile could be seen on anyone’s face,
Instead, the car was dead silent, and everyone was serious. The air was thick with a tension none of them had ever felt before.
The desert lion had escaped, and once again, they’d lost track of Bessa.
Afraid those guys might chase after them, Sierra and her crew had to hightail it back to the capital from Grave Canyon.
The very first thing they did was call the cops and report what happened.
Sierra pulled up the car’s surveillance footage as proof. Desert lions were super rare around here, so when the police heard a bunch of them had been poached, they jumped into action.
Local cops rushed a team out to Grave Canyon.
But those guys had already cleared out fast. By the time the police showed up, the place was a wreck, but the bad guys were long gone.
Since they were in a foreign country, the rest was out of Sierra’s hands.
The wildlife rescue team had all gotten banged up in one way or another. After reporting everything to the cops, they hit up the biggest hospital in town for a check-up.
Once they made sure nobody was seriously hurt, they headed back to the hotel to plan their next move.
Back at the hotel, Sierra spoke up, “According to the way those guys operate, they’ll be back sniffing around for Bessa soon. And when we were facing off with them, I saw what looked like a bullet wound on Bessa’s hind leg.”
“Bessa’s hurt?” Ethan sounded genuinely shocked. “Then tomorrow, we hit the desert again. This time, let’s load up on gear and fuel.”
After making their plans, everyone went back to their own room
Sierra was starving, so she ordered some food from room service and asked for some nuts.
Once her food arrived, she opened the window in her hotel room.
The moment she pushed it open, a row of gray sparrows perched right along the windowsill.
The little sparrows were chirping away, staring at her with their big, shiny eyes, not blinking once.
