Connor thought he was hallucinating from being so busy these past few days.

With his salary and benefits, he was making over one thousand day, but after taxes, he still didn’t even hit 300 thousand a year.

But every department director at the company made at least 100 thousand a month.

Connor quickly said, “Don’t worry, sir. I’ll make sure you end up with Ms. Sterling!”

With Connor as his love wingman, Elliot instantly felt pumped with confidence.

Elliot said, “Connor, go check if there’s any haven nearby. If not a church or a mosque works, too. I just need somewhere to pray to any deity.”

Connor was speechless.

He thought, ‘He was just thinking about how to get together with Ms. Sterling, and now he suddenly wants to go pray to some deity?’

Seeing Connor giving him that dumbfounded look, Elliot just sighed. “Honestly, at this rate, you’ll never get promoted to director. If you can’t handle this, you might as well pack your stuff and leave.”

Connor started sweating. “Not at all, sir! I’ll check right away.”

In less than three minutes, Connor had checked every religious site within 6 miles.

Elliot picked the nearest one. He didn’t care what kind of place was. He just wanted Sierra to make it back safe.

Meanwhile, Sierra and her crew had already ventured deep inside the Nymeria Desert.

They kept heading east, and when they passed Grave Canyon, those cars were still parked there.

The tires were all blown out, so there was no way for anyone to drive off, but the animals that had been killed earlier had vanished.

Later, the police used the cars’ dashcams to identify the foreign guy and the Valorian.

The foreign guy was Gar Wilk, a famous billionaire from Darmond. He’d been reported before for keeping wild animals in captivity for hunting, but he paid a fortune to sweep it under the rug.

The Valorian was a man from Havaria named Holden Kaufman, but that was probably a fake name. All the police could find out about him was his nationality.

Later, Sierra replayed the whole thing in her head.

She figured those guys couldn’t have bailed that fast unless someone was nearby to back them up.

She thought, ‘But if there really was someone covering for them why didn’t they just come out and take us out for good?

‘Was it because they didn’t want to reveal themselves, or did they know they’d lose if they tried to mess with us?’

“What are you thinking about?” Just as Sierra was deep in though, she suddenly heard Sophie quietly ask her.

Sierra turned her head and saw Sophie looking at her, clearly out of ideas.

“Sierra, why have you been so quiet this whole trip?” Sophie asked. “If something’s bugging you, just say it. We’re not as smart as you, but we can still pitch in when you need help.”

Sierra opened her mouth to explain.

But Sophie suddenly chuckled. “If you keep overthinking like that, you’ll end up with more wrinkles on your forehead.”

Timothy, riding shotgun, quickly nodded. “Yeah, Sierra, whatever’s bothering you, let’s all put our heads together. If there’s a problem, we’ll all worry about it.”

Sierra was both amused and a little helpless.

She hurried to explain, “I’m not worried or anything. I just like to zone out and think by myself when I’m in the car. It’s not like I’m trying to keep anything from you guys.”

Of course everyone in the car understood.

They all knew Sierra was carrying a lot of stress, and just hoped she wouldn’t keep it all to herself.

Hearing Sierra’s explanation, everyone let out a sigh of relief.

The SUVs cruised over one winding dune after another. At one point, one of the cars got stuck in the sand, and it took everyone a whole hour to pull it free.

With so many vehicles around, the animals steered clear, so Siema didn’t get a chance to ask any of them for info the entire

way.

By the time night fell, they came up empty-handed.

Sierra couldn’t chat with animals in front of the group, so once everyone had set up camp for the night in the desert, she wandered around nearby with the wildlife rescue team.

She got lucky this time. Just under 1000 feet away, Sierra spotted an ostrich snoozing under a tree.

Its feathers were all messy and fluffed up, making it look just like a scruffy rooster fresh out of a brawl.

At first, when it spotted Ethan and the others, it was super wary. But as soon as Sierra stepped out from behind Ethan, its cute little eyes blinked rapidly, and it blurted out, “Wow, what a gorgeous human!”

With that, it scampered right over to Sierra, sticking out its tongue like it was dying to give her a kiss.

Sierra reacted with lightning speed, grabbing the ostrich’s beak before it could get any closer, leaving its tongue flopped out comically.

Sierra said, “No, thank you.”

The ostrich wasn’t even a little disappointed. Instead, it was totally starstruck, thinking, ‘Wow, pretty humans really are on another level. Even when she’s being all icy, her voice is still mesmerizing!’

The ostrich shot Sierra a look that screamed, “I swear I won’t do again!” Only then did Sierra let go.

The ostrich bent its neck, rubbed its head against Sierra, and then said, “Hey, pretty human, is there something you need?”

Sierra’s expression softened right away.

“I’m trying to find an animal named Bessa. It’s a female desert lion, and its back leg is hurt,” Sierra said.

“Bessa?” the ostrich echoed, as if recalling something.

The ostrich’s eyes lit up as it asked, “You mean the pregnant lioness?”

“Pregnant?” Sierra blurted out, startled.

‘Bessa’s pregnant?’ The news hit Sierra like a bolt from the blue.

The ostrich said, “I don’t know anything about Bessa, but last night I saw a lion being chased by a whole group of humans.

“Its back leg was injured, and it was definitely pregnant. Its belly boked like it could pop any day now.”

Hearing that, Sierra was pretty sure this was the Bessa they’d been searching for.

“Have you seen any other desert lions around?” Sierra asked.

The ostrich said, “Yeah, I have. Desert lions aren’t like the others. I almost never see them hanging out together. But over the past month, I’ve seen at least twenty desert lions moving in pack, all heading toward the Skeleton Coast.

Sierra was totally taken aback by this bombshell.

Desert lions were usually loners. Seeing a whole pack of them together like this was seriously rare.

‘Could it be that something awful happened to their kind, and that’s why they’re all gathering in one place? Sierra wondered.

Still mulling it over, Sierra thanked the ostrich and made her way back to the
