The wildlife rescue team knew Sierra was just shaken up. Even though she’d hit the wolves, at least she used her hand. Back when they were kids, their parents would’ve used whips. She didn’t really mean to hurt them.
Timothy quickly said, “Sierra, don’t be mad. They are still young. If they make mistakes, we’ll guide them as they grow.”
Ryan chimed in, “Yeah, Timothy’s right. Sierra, let’s just talk it out. No need for you to lay a hand on them.”
Timothy nodded. “Yeah, exactly!”
Ryan joked, “When it comes to giving kids a good spanking, I’m a pro. Sierra, just leave it to me.”
Timothy laughed, “Savage!”
Hearing the two of them go back and forth like a stand-up comedy act, Sierra’s anger shot up and then fizzled out just as fast.
She took a deep breath, calmed herself down, and turned to the two wolves. “Did the alpha know you left?”
The two wolves nodded in unison. “Yeah, when Dad died, he told us to find you. It said only Sierra could protect us.”
Sierra’s heart skipped a beat. She stared at them in shock. “The alpha is dead?”
The two wolves nodded, looking heartbroken. “Not long after you left, poachers broke into our territory, trying to take our fangs and skins.
“Dad and the others fought fiercely to protect the pack, but in the end, only my brother and I made it out alive.”
The other wolf said, “Dad was worried about us. Before it died, its last wish was for us to find you. It said Sierra’s the only one who’d look out for us.”
“We don’t have any family left, so we figured we’d come here.”
After hearing the wolves’ story, Sierra’s face was a storm of emotions.
She knew all too well that poachers lurked everywhere, stealing lives and homes from wild animals every single moment.
But hearing it straight from the wolves hit her, leaving her heart tangled with grief and anger.
“Given all that, stay with me for now. We’ll figure out the rest as we go.” Sierra was in the middle of talking, totally unaware that someone from the van had gotten out.
It wasn’t until the two wolves in front of her suddenly bared their teeth, slobber gathering at the corners of their mouths, that Sierra instinctively turned her head to see what was going on.
Across from her stood a middle-aged man in a dark blue work uniform, slightly balding, and he was staring right at Sierra.
It was the van driver who’d been sitting in the car the whole time refusing to get out.
Sierra narrowed her eyes. “What’s your problem?” she snapped.
The driver glanced at Sierra, then at the two wolves, and blurted out, “Are you Sierra? Did these two wolves run off from your zoo?”
Sierra froze for a second, surprised.

She was as famous as any A-list celebrity now, so it wasn’t weird that the guy recognized her. Still, Sierra wasn’t sure why he’d say that.
She realized the two wolf pups must’ve stirred up some kind of trouble. Even if she didn’t know the details, if she was going to take them in, she’d have to handle whatever came with them.
So, Sierra nodded. “Yeah, I know them.”
“Well, that makes things a lot easier,” the man said. The moment he got a yes, his whole vibe shifted, from timid to calculating in a heartbeat.
The two wolves’ gazes sharpened, instantly locking onto him.
Sierra gave their heads a reassuring pat, shooting them a look to tell them leave this to her.
Seeing that, the wolves crouched down on either side of Sierra, but even then, their eyes stayed glued to the man, never letting him out of their sight.
One of the wolves growled, “Sierra, be careful. This human reeks and he snatches kids. He’s not a good one!”
Sierra’s expression shifted instantly when she heard that..
She
gave
the man another once-over, sizing him up.
His hair was wild and messy, his brows drooped, and his eyes were fixed on her, unblinking.
“What do you want?” Sierra asked.
The man grinned. “I know you, Sierra, the director of WonderWild Zoo. So, these two wolves must’ve gotten out because you weren’t watching them properly.”
With that, he held out his hand.
His hand had been wrapped in a piece of cloth, but now he pulled it away and revealed the bone through the bite marks.
His tone sharpened. “Look at this! Your zoo’s animals did this to me. Since you’re the one in charge, shouldn’t you compensate me?”
Ryan, not knowing the real story, assumed the guy was just a victim and started to step forward to explain, but Sierra held. him back with a quick gesture.
At first, Ryan was puzzled, but when he glanced at Sierra’s profile and saw her somber, uneasy expression, he immediately realized there was more to this than met the eye. He quietly stepped back, keeping silent.
Sierra finally spoke up, her tone cool. “Looks pretty bad. So, what kind of compensation are you after?”
Seeing Sierra’s cold reaction, the guy totally lost his cool.
“Is that how you treat people? Not even an apology? I’m telling you. I need to get to the hospital right now. You’d better pay for my hospital bills and fix my hand, and you owe me 300 thousand dollars!”
Timothy’s eyes went wide.
‘Is this guy out of his mind?’ he thought. ‘He’s still alive and kicking, and he’s already trying to squeeze 300 thousand bucks out of us?’
Sierra was thinking the exact same thing. Hearing that outrageous demand, she just scoffed coldly, “If it were anyone else, I wouldn’t even blink at 300 thousand, I’d pay 3 million.

“But tell me, with all these people here, why did the wolves only go after your van and not anyone else?”

“Exactly! That’s because the people in that van are human traffickers. They stole the kid who took us in out of kindness,” one of the wolves growled.
