Amberty was seriously short on police dogs. Otherwise, the police station wouldn’t have come up with this kind of plan.
Sierra didn’t agree right away. Instead, she checked with Richie and Penny to see what they thought.
“Sierra, I’m in,” Richie said.
“Sierra, Richie, and I are both in,” Penny added.
As soon as Sierra finished telling them everything, Richie and Penny agreed almost instantly.
Sierra was a little worried they didn’t really get how dangerous it could be, but after she explained everything, the two wolves didn’t hesitate at all.
“Sierra, we know it’s risky, but didn’t the cops say if we help crack this case, we’ll get a secure job like the police dogs?” Richie said.
“You guys actually know what that means?” Sierra was genuinely surprised.
The two wolves gave her a proud look and nodded. “There’s a border post on Mount Kaelenridge with three military dogs.
“They told us that if we work hard, use our noses and fighting skills to help the cops solve cases, they’ll reward us with tons of delicious snacks.”
“But we don’t want to leave the zoo, Sierra. Could you ask the cops for us? We want to stay at the zoo most of the time and just help out when they need us,” Penny said.
Sierra agreed.
Sierra relayed messages back and forth like a human phone, and the cops were over the moon.
After all, suddenly landing two police wolves was something no one else in the country could brag about.
Best of all, all they had to do was toss food each day. They couldn’t get a better deal than that.
The cops didn’t waste any
time. That very
afternoon, Sierra brought Richie and Penny over to the police station.
Before that, the police had already gotten some info about the missing kids from five suspects, so they reached out to the parents and asked for the kids’ clothes.
The officer told Sierra, “Ms. Sterling, could you give the clothes to Richie and Penny? Let them get a good whiff so they can remember the scent and help us find the exact location.”
Sierra nodded. But she didn’t even have to do anything. As soon as the officer finished speaking, Richie and Penny immediately sniffed the missing kids’ clothes. After memorizing the scent, Richie and Penny let out a howl
“Sierra, we’ve got the scent locked in,” they said.
Then Sierra pulled the clothes away from Richie and Penny.
The five suspects hadn’t revealed the exact spot, so the cops could only do a broad sweep of the area.
Eventually, they narrowed it down to three steel mills on the west side of Amberty.
According to the suspects, even though they were blindfolded every time they dropped off the kids, they could tell it was a steel mill. Because the place was filled with the nonstop racket of drilling and welding.

With that key info, the police quickly narrowed down the list of hills.
The cops went in with a surprise raid, checking each mill one by one.

But even with Richie and Penny sniffing around, they searched every nook and cranny, no kids, no suspicious characters, nothing at all.
The cops started to sense something was wrong.
Anderson was in charge this time, and he gathered everyone on the spot. “Did the suspects give us the wrong info? Are we investigating in the wrong direction?”
They discussed it for a long time, but still got nowhere.
Just then, Sierra spoke up, “I don’t think we’re off track. Those five suspects have done this so many times, and they’re all from around here. Even if they were blindfolded, there’s no way they’d mess up the general area.”
“What if they’re lying?” someone wondered aloud.
Sierra shook her head. “I doubt it. You guys have been interrogating them around the clock. No matter how tough they are, they can’t handle that.
“They’ve been hiding for so long, their nerves are already shot. Plus, they’re scared one of their own will sell them out first. From a psychological standpoint, after hours of grilling, they’re going to spill anything that might help themselves.
“And since all their stories line up, I really don’t think they’re making anything up.”
The cops hadn’t expected Sierra to be more of an expert than any of them.
One of the officers couldn’t help but ask, “So what should we do now?”
Sierra said, “We’re searching in the right direction. There must be some small detail we’re missing.”
Sierra had been racking her brain about it the whole way, but still couldn’t figure it out.
Just then, Sophie, who had come along, suddenly yanked her aside. “Sierra, watch out!”
Right after she said that, random welding sparks started raining down over Sierra’s head.
Most of the sparks fizzled out in midair, but a few actually made it to the ground before burning out.
If those sparks had landed on Sierra, her clothes would’ve been burned right through..
Sophie was full of concern. “Sierra, did any sparks hit you? Are you okay?”
Sierra shook her head.
Anderson quickly said, “This is on me. We should’ve just talked in the car. It’s way too noisy and dangerous here. Thanks for all your hard work today, everyone. We’ll go over everything again when we get back. You all should get some rest-”
“Hold on.” Sierra reached out, stopping Anderson mid-sentence.
The wildlife rescue team perked up instantly.
Whenever Sierra said that, it meant she’d found something.
Everyone stared at Sierra, waiting for her next move.
Sierra met everyone’s gaze, her eyes lighting up with excitement “I think we’re actually heading in the right direction, but

we’ve been looking at the wrong mill!”
“What do you mean?” Anderson didn’t argue. He just listened to Sierra, totally focused.
