The wild animals were in bad shape. A lot of them were unconscious from suffocation.
The only silver lining was that, thanks to Sierra’s quick thinking and cool head, she managed to reach what she was sure was the driver’s route as fast as possible, rescuing the wild animals before it was too late.
But here’s the crazy part: in a truck less than 23 feet long, there were over 800 wild animals crammed inside, including more than a hundred critically endangered species.
All the truck drivers were taken back to the police station for questioning, and Sierra went along with Sophie to give her statement.
Sierra had been running on fumes for days, and now her temples were throbbing.
Sophie poured Sierra a glass of water and asked with concern, “What’s wrong? Not feeling well?”
Sierra nodded and said, “I’m just a bit sleep-deprived. Can I go home and get some rest after I finish my statement?”
Sophie nodded and replied, “If you don’t mind, you can crash at my place. It’s a two-hour drive from here to your place.”
Sierra was so tired she just agreed without protest. If she didn’t get some sleep soon, she was seriously going to drop dead.
The statement was done in no time, and after that, Sophie took Sierra to her room.
Sierra slipped into Sophie’s pajamas and was ready to crash.
“By the way, I almost forgot to ask you something,” Sophie said.
Sierra opened her eyes and looked at Sophie, who was about to close the door. She asked, “What is it?”
“The police rescued thousands of cats and dogs, but no shelters can take them in right now. They’re all still stuck at the station. Do you know of any other places that could take them?” Sophie asked.
Sierra’s head throbbed even harder. “How many are we talking about?” she asked, a bit overwhelmed.
“1,832 dogs and exactly 1,600 cats. Sadly, 323 of them didn’t make it,” Sophie replied.
Sierra’s heart ached for them. She gritted her teeth. She thought, ‘If no shelters would take them, I’ll just have to find a way myself, no matter what.’
“I’ll take them all in. Just let me sleep for three hours, and I’ll handle everything when I wake up,” Sierra said.
Sophie was genuinely taken aback.
She’d figured that, since Sierra was part of the Wildlife Protection Association, Sierra would have connections to more shelters. She hadn’t expected Sierra to actually offer to personally take them all in.

Sophie thought, ‘We’re talking over three thousand cats and dogs here. Even if you feed them nothing but rice, it’ll still burn through a ton of cash and supplies.
But Sierra barely paused for two seconds before saying she’d take them all in herself. This is way too crazy!
From what Sophie had seen online, Sierra’s reputation wasn’t exactly stellar, but here she was, stepping up without a moment’s hesitation.
Sophie wanted to say she hadn’t meant it like that, but Sierra was already out cold. She was out like a light within seconds of finishing her sentence.
Sophie watched Sierra sleeping and sighed deeply. Running into Sierra might just turn her whole life upside down.
She gently pulled the door shut, then made her way to the conference room at the station. Facing the heavy- hitters from all walks of life, she picked up the pen and signed both agreements, cool as ice.
Sierra meant to nap for just three hours, but she ended up sleeping straight through to the next morning.
What she didn’t realize was that, in less than ten hours, the rescue operation had gone viral online. Millions of people were talking about it, calling it a textbook example.
And on top of that, the police quickly tracked down Charles at a bar.
When Charles got busted, he didn’t feel the slightest bit sorry. He just kept saying he did it because he hated Sierra’s guts, and it had nothing to do with anyone else.
He was totally sure he wouldn’t end up behind bars for something this minor. Even if he did get sent to jail, he figured he could just pay his way out of trouble. After all, his folks would bail him out no matter what.
But what really threw him for a loop was that, after he confessed to everything, he was immediately thrown into detention. It was obvious they had zero intention of letting him go.
Charles started to panic. He demanded, “What’s going on? Wasn’t I supposed to leave after the questioning?”
The cop shot him a sideways look and sneered, “Leave? You wish. You deliberately stole someone else’s stuff, and this is a big deal. You’re not going anywhere for a while.”
Charles was totally dumbfounded. He protested, “I stole a dog, not money. Since when is stealing a dog the same as stealing cash?”
The cop shot back, “You stole an internet-famous dog that’s worth real money, and the sedative you used is illegal here. Long story short, you broke the law. So get comfy, you’re not going anywhere.”
The cop couldn’t be bothered to argue anymore and just walked away.
Charles felt like he’d been hit by lightning, just staring blankly at the cop’s back as he walked away. But then, just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse, he got hit with news that felt like the sky was falling.

Chapter 42
Charles’s father, Paul, showed up.
Charles saw a glimmer of hope: he figured he’d be out of here in no time.

But instead of bailing Charles out, Paul stormed over and slapped him hard across the face, shouting, “You idiot. Look at what you’ve done. Of all the people you could’ve pissed off, you just had to go after Sierra.”
“W-What’s happening?” Charles stammered, totally stunned by the slap.
Honestly, ever since he’d been dragged into the station for questioning, his mind had been in a complete fog.
Seeing Charles standing there, clueless, Paul was so mad he could barely get the words out. He snapped, “You seriously have the nerve to ask? All because of some woman, you almost ruined the whole family.
“Now Elliot has made it clear: anyone who dares to work with our family is automatically his enemy.”
Just hearing Elliot’s name sent a chill down Charles’s spine.
It wasn’t that Elliot was some big deal. He might suck at most things, but when it came to causing trouble and being a total menace, nobody could beat him.
If Elliot decided to come after someone, the person could kiss his peaceful life goodbye for good.
Charles was totally floored. He asked, “Seriously? I’ve never had any drama with Elliot. Doesn’t his family ever keep him in check?”
Elliot was a total mess and never serious about anything, so it was his big brother who actually ran the family’s business.
Charles thought, ‘With Elliot acting out like this, the Paterson family should really do something about him.’
Paul said, “Elliot’s mom is Vivian, the one who did that variety show with Sierra. Vivian and Sierra are tight, so who do you think is really behind all this? They make it clear: you’d better come clean, or we’re all screwed because of you.”
With that, Paul stormed off, leaving Charles standing there, white as a sheet, dazed and frozen in place.

Natalie had just walked through the front door of the Sterling residence when the police arrived, summons in hand.
“Ms. Sterling, we have reason to believe you’re involved in a theft case. We need you to come with us to the station,” one of the officers said.
Natalie’s face darkened with shock. “I… I have no idea what you’re talking about. My family’s loaded. Why would I ever need to steal from anyone?” she stammered.
Sharon rushed out and said, “Officer, there must be some mistake. My daughter has never wanted for anything in her life. There’s no way she’d ever steal.”

Sharon stood protectively in front of Natalie, blocking her like the cops were some kind of wild beasts instead) of just regular officers.

looked like he was about to roll his eyes right out of his head. He said, “Ms. Sterling is suspected of talking someone into stealing, so she needs to come with us to the station and give a statement.
“If it turns out she’s not involved, we’ll personally bring her back. It’s every citizen’s duty to cooperate with an investigation. Please don’t get in the way, ma’am, or we’ll have to take more serious action if we have to.”
Sharon looked even more distressed than Natalie. With her husband and two sons nowhere in sight, she could only stand there helplessly, tears welling up in her eyes as she watched Natalie being taken away.
