Sierra only meant to nap for three hours, but when she opened her eyes, it was already morning. The ringing phone from the police was what dragged her out of sleep.
The officer said, “Ms. Sterling, we’ve apprehended the suspect. Would you be able to come down to the station?” His tone was polite, almost deferential.
Honestly, dog theft was usually a minor offense. The suspect probably wouldn’t even see jail time.
But the higher-ups were all over this case, demanding the police dig into every detail. It was clear they wanted the suspect behind bars. They also made it clear that the victim had to be satisfied with the outcome.
With the top brass calling personally, the chief was under a ton of pressure. He couldn’t help but wonder who Sierra really was for so many big shots to be getting involved for her.
So after Sierra said goodbye to Sophie and drove to the station, everyone there treated her with the utmost
respect.
One officer said, “Ms. Sterling, Charles has already confessed. He said Natalie messaged him on her phone. venting about you and wanting payback, but never finding the right moment.
“When he accidentally found out Payton was staying at the dog boarding school, he got the idea to help Natalie get back at you.”
Sierra sneered inwardly, ‘Accidentally found out? That same tired excuse again.’
She asked, “And what about Natalie?”
The officer hesitated, then said, “We’ve recovered their chat history. Natalie’s attempts to egg Charles on were pretty well hidden. If you tried to take legal action, it probably wouldn’t hold up in court.”
What he didn’t say was that Sierra could file a lawsuit, but Natalie hadn’t actually broken any laws. Even if Sierra sued and won, the worst that could happen was Natalie paying a fine. For the Sterlings, that amount was just pocket change.
Sierra was well aware of that. She said, “I understand. I’ll pursue legal action against Charles, and I’m also going to sue Natalie in court.”
She’d known from the very beginning that Natalie was the one stirring things up. In cases like this, at most, the cops would just give her a slap on the wrist and let her out in a day or two.
But she wasn’t about to let Natalie off the hook that easily. Even if it was just to make things difficult, she was going to make sure Natalie really felt it.
The officer nodded and said, “That’s your right.”
After Sierra finished signing the paperwork at the station, the Sterlings all showed up. When they saw Sierra in the lobby, they all froze for a moment.
Before any of them could say a word. Natalie was led out of the interrogation room by a police officer, her

The moment Natalie saw Sierra standing with the rest of the Sterlings, she started shaking all over, then broke
down in tears.
Sharon rushed to Natalie’s side, worry written all over her face. She asked, “Nat, did the police give you a hard time? Are you okay?”
Natalie looked up at Sharon with pleading eyes and said, “Mom, you have to believe me. I never did anything to hurt Sierra or Payton.”
Sharon nodded instantly. She said, “You’re so kind. There’s no way you’d ever do something like that. It was all just Charles misunderstanding you.”
On the way to the station, the Sterlings had already heard the whole story.
Sharon thought, ‘Unbelievable, it’s Sierra again. How could I have given birth to such a disgusting daughter?’
Sharon turned around, her gaze both mournful and resentful. She moved in slow, deliberate steps, stopping just a breath away from Sierra. While everyone was still frozen in shock, she suddenly swung her hand up, intending to slap Sierra.
The cops tried to stop Sharon, but they were a second too late.
Just as Sharon’s hand was about to slap Sierra across the face, Sierra shot out her own hand, grabbing Sharon’s wrist in a firm grip. With a sharp flick of her wrist, Sierra released Sharon, sending her crashing to the ground.
“Mom!” Natalie cried out.
“Sharon!” Jimmy shouted.
The Sterling brothers and Jimmy hurried over.
Natalie looked utterly stunned, but there was still a hint of delight in her eyes that she couldn’t hide.
She never thought Charles would rat her out. She’d been worried the Sterlings would turn on her because of this, but Sierra always managed to make things worse: she actually ended up knocking her own mother to the ground.
Natalie rushed to stand between Sharon and Sierra, her eyes filled with devastation. She demanded, “Sierra, how could you push Mom?
“It’s all my fault. I sent those messages, and Charles misunderstood me. He almost got Payton hurt, but I never meant for Payton to get hurt, not ever.”
“Nat, don’t waste your breath trying to reason with this disgrace,” Jimmy snapped.
After helping Sharon up, Jimmy’s face was stormy. He said, “She’s always so hung up on every little thing. She blames us for not looking after her, so now she thinks everything you do is some plot.”

Jimmy thought, ‘Funny how I used to think Sierra was so well-behaved when she first came back to the family.
Jimmy said, “Sierra, did it ever cross your mind that if Nat had really wanted to hurt Payton, she wouldn’t have begged us to let Payton stay? She’s the one who looks after Payton when you’re not around.”
Sierra let out a cold laugh. She shot back, “Thanks for bringing that up. I almost forgot. Every time Natalie fed Payton, he’d end up sick. If he hadn’t learned to be careful, Payton would’ve been dead by her hand ages ago!”
Back then, Sierra was still caught up in the joy of being welcomed back by the Sterlings, never even imagining Natalie had it out for Payton all along.
Sierra thought, ‘Seriously, what did Payton ever do to her? Natalie just can’t let a dog live in peace.’
Sierra’s voice rang out, hoarse and cold, in the massive hall. She said, “Natalie, this isn’t over. It’ll only end when one of us is six feet under.”
Natalie instinctively looked up, meeting Sierra’s eyes, and she couldn’t stop herself from shaking. She knew all too well: Sierra had changed. Sierra used to just throw out threats, but now, she was dead serious.
Natalie thought, ‘What the hell is Sierra going to do?’ A chill ran down her spine.
Natalie looked completely lost and panicked, while the other Sterlings were all glaring at Sierra with barely contained rage.
Sierra just couldn’t help but find the whole thing absurd. She turned to the officer and said, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading out.”
The officer, who’d just gotten front-row seats to a soap opera, was still a bit dazed as he nodded. He said, “I’ll walk you out.”
With the cop there, the Sterlings didn’t dare make a move.
Once Sierra got home, she let out a long, relieved sigh. Only then did she remember: she still had a bunch of rescued strays to deal with, and Payton was another headache waiting for her.
Sierra sent Vivian a message, telling her to come by tomorrow and pick up Payton.
Vivian replied in a flash, agreeing right away.
Worried Sierra might think she couldn’t handle the dog, Vivian even sent over a video.
In the video, Payton was sprawled out on the couch like a dog emperor, watching TV. Honestly, he looked more like the owner of the place than anyone else.
Sierra felt a little embarrassed, but to her relief, Vivian was totally chill about it. Sierra let out a sigh of relief.
Right then, Sophie messaged Sierra, asking when she planned to take care of all those stray cats and dogs.
Sierra thought it over. She could handle all these cats and dogs herself. The only real problem was finding a place big enough for them. Suddenly, WonderWild Zoo popped into her mind.

The zoo was a thousand acres. That was plenty of space for all the strays.

Sierra shut her eyes and tapped into her zoo’s system to check on things. But almost instantly, she sensed that something was off.
