After wrapping up the stray animal rescue, Sierra got up early the next morning and headed to the Paterson residence.

Vivian was already waiting at the entrance, holding Payton on a leash.

As soon as Sierra stepped out of the car, Payton broke free and dashed over in a mess. He called out, “Sierra, you finally came to pick me up. You have no idea how rough my life has been.”

Payton ran up to Sierra and howled at the sky, setting off all the motion-activated lights outside the villa.

Sierra, expressionless, clamped her hand over Payton’s mouth.

Payton let out a little whimper, his howl cut off instantly. Then he cocked his head, blinked those big puppy eyes, and pulled out all the cute tricks he knew.

Sierra snorted, “Don’t think I don’t know you’ve been living like a little emperor at Vivian’s place.”

In the video Vivian sent, there was a guy in his thirties, someone Sierra knew. His name was Leonard, Vivian’s eldest son and Sophie’s husband.

In the video, Leonard had just sat down when Payton, as if he was out to mess with him, rushed over to steal his seat.

At first, Leonard didn’t want to make a fuss and moved to the other side, but Payton just happily chased after him. Basically, Payton just kept picking fights with Leonard at every turn.

Finally, Leonard accidentally leaned on Payton a little, and Payton threw his head back and let out a scream that could wake the dead.

Sierra thought, ‘Now Payton still has the nerve to say he had a rough life here? He was the one bullying Leonard.’

Payton hung his head, looking totally guilty.

Seeing this, Sierra let go of Payton’s mouth and patted his head. She turned to Vivian with a hint of apology and said, “Vivian, I really haven’t done a good job training Payton. I’ll make sure to discipline him properly when we get home.”

Vivian quickly waved her hand and said, “Payton’s way better behaved than my youngest son. Sure, his bark is a bit of a nightmare, but at least he doesn’t tear the house apart!”

Vivian was a dog owner herself, and she’d always thought a high-energy dog like Payton would be a total wrecking ball. But nope. Payton was an absolute sweetheart, unless he was messing with Leonard.

While they were chatting, Leonard came out looking all business in a suit. He didn’t even blink when he saw Sierra: Vivian must’ve already told him she was coming.

Leonard looked like he’d stepped straight out of a magazine: ridiculously handsome, rocking a jet-black suit that screamed high-class and untouchable. His features were sharp, with deep-set eyes and a perfectly straight

He gave Sierra a quick nod, then said to Vivian, “I’m heading out to pick up Sophie for lunch. Mom, Sierra, you two go ahead and catch up.”

Vivian waved him off. She said, “Alright, just be careful on the road,”

As soon as Leonard left, Vivian led Sierra into the entryway.

Payton, acting like he owned the place, strutted over and sprawled out on the sofa. With his big pink paw, he smacked the remote and turned on the hottest singing competition on TV.

Vivian didn’t even bat an eye. She said, “Payton’s seriously smart. I swear, he can not only work the remote, but he also sneaks into the kitchen and raids the fridge in the middle of the night.”

Sierra shot Payton a death glare.

Payton’s ears kept twitching, but he buried his head in the sofa cushions, as if hiding would magically make him invisible to Sierra. He shook uncontrollably.

Sierra couldn’t help but laugh, even though she was mad.

Payton was a whole different breed compared to regular dogs.

Animals might have simple minds, but they were not nearly as dumb as humans liked to think.

But Payton was on another level. Sometimes, it was like he was thinking just like a person.

Sierra thought, ‘He actually raided the fridge? Was he also rummaging through the fridge or even the trash whenever I wasn’t around? Maybe I should just install some cameras at home when I get back.

Sierra was worried she might end up disciplining Payton right in front of Vivian, so instead, she brought up her plans to quit the industry.

Vivian said, “Sierra, if it were anyone else with your kind of popularity, I’d definitely tell them not to leave. But you’re different. You’re just too genuine for this giant mess of an entertainment circle.”

Even though Sierra’s reputation had flipped, for some reason, a quick search online still pulled up nothing. but troll posts about her.

Back when Vivian didn’t really know Sierra, she never thought Sierra was as bad as the rumor mills made her out to be, but she figured Sierra probably had a difficult personality.

But later, she realized just how wrong she’d been. She’d let her own assumptions get in the way and totally misjudged Sierra.

Vivian always thought she was in it for the love of acting, but as her fans multiplied and the praise kept rolling in, she found herself loving the spotlight more and more.

But Sierra was different. To her, being a star was just a regular nine-to-five.

That kind of attitude was rare, but in a place as messy as showbiz, someone like Sierra was bound to attract envy and gossip.

And sure enough, that was exactly how things went down.

Now that Sierra was planning to quit showbiz, Vivian was the first to have her back.

Vivian said, “Go chase your dreams, don’t hold back. If you ever hit a wall, you know you can count on me.”

Payton, who’d been hiding his head in the sofa cushions, suddenly popped up and barked out, “Hey, Sierra, I’m your strongest supporter, too!”

Sierra turned her head, looked at Payton’s fluffy head, and reached out to give it a gentle pat. She thought, ‘It’s really great to get a second chance at life.’

Since Vivian knew Sierra was coming over, she had the chef whip up a feast.

Everyone in the Paterson family was there, except for Vivian’s husband, Eric, who was still overseas on business, and their youngest son, Elliot, who was out living it up somewhere.

After lunch, Sierra got ready to head out.

Since Sierra had driven herself, Vivian couldn’t really send someone to take her home. All she could do was remind Sierra to be careful on the way back.

Sierra made her way back to her place.

Even though Sierra knew Payton was a gentle husky and wouldn’t bite anyone, he was still a medium-sized dog. So, even if he hated the leash, Sierra clipped it on him anyway.

Right before the elevator doors opened, Sierra let him off the leash.

Payton bolted out like a shot. He barked, “I’m finally home!”

Sierra could hear Payton tearing through the hallway, his paws making a rapid, rhythmic tap-tap-tap on the floor. But just as she stepped out of the elevator, Payton suddenly barked twice, sharp and alert.

Sierra rushed over and saw Payton growling at a man in an immaculate black suit, his fur bristling all over.

The moment the man turned around, Sierra finally got a good look at him, and her smile dropped instantly. She snapped, “Jonathan, what are you doing here at my place?”
