Payton started barking angrily from the sidelines. He knew Sierra couldn’t stand Jonathan right now, so he jumped up and tried to shove Jonathan away with his front paws.
Payton barked, “Sierra doesn’t like you one bit. This house belongs to Sierra and me, so scram already.”
Seeing Jonathan just standing there like a statue, Payton decided to go all out and leaped at him like a rabbit pouncing on an eagle.
Payton packed a punch, and Jonathan staggered, almost losing his balance.
Just as Jonathan reached out to push Payton away, Sierra jumped in front, protectively blocking Payton, her eyes full of suspicion. “What do you think you’re doing?” she demanded.
Jonathan said, “I wasn’t trying to hurt your dog, okay?”
He thought, ‘Seriously, anyone could tell Payton started it. Sierra is always assuming the worst about everyone, making Dad and Mom sad and leaving us disappointed, step by step. No matter what, she’s still my little sister.’
Jonathan forced down his anger and said, “Sierra, I came here today because I want to talk things out with you. We messed up before. If you’ve got any complaints, let’s go inside and hash it out, okay?”
“Sit down and talk? Where, exactly?” Sierra shot back. She pointed at her door and pressed, “Did Natalie snitch on my address again?”
Jonathan felt his head throb. He thought, ‘Here she comes again, always doubting Nat.
He said, “No, come on, Sierra, if the Sterling family wanted your address, it’d be a piece of cake.”
Sierra dug through her bag and fished out her phone.
“What are you doing?” Jonathan asked.
Sierra shot him a look of pure exasperation and replied, “Calling the cops.”
Jonathan couldn’t hold back his anger anymore. He grabbed Sierra’s phone and smashed it on the floor.
The phone shattered into pieces.
All the lights in the hallway turned on, and the air between them froze, heavy and suffocating.
Sierra blinked, her eyes fixed on the shattered pieces of her phone.
Seeing that, regret hit Jonathan hard. He started, “Sierra, I…”
Before he could finish, Sierra slapped him across the face, leaving him stunned and his head turned to the side.

Jonathan stared at her in shock, slowly meeting Sierra’s gaze: her eyes were cold as ice, chilling him to the
bone.
“Jonathan, have I been giving you too much respect or what?” Sierra snapped, her voice sharp and furious.
Jonathan stared at her, disbelief and hurt written all over his face. He thought, ‘She actually slapped me?’ In that moment, he could feel the change in Sierra, clear as day.
He had seen that same cold, hostile look in her eyes before, back when Sierra pushed Natalie down the stairs and got thrown into the storage room as punishment.
Jonathan thought, ‘Back then, Sierra was nothing like this. She used to always have her eyes on us, and she never looked at me like I was the enemy.’
Sierra broke eye contact with Jonathan and said, “I’ve got nothing to say to the Sterling family. If you want to keep shielding Natalie, suit yourself.” After being reset, the word “forgiveness” never even existed in her mind.
In Sierra’s previous life, Natalie had personally shoved Sierra into hell. This time around, Sierra was dead set on making Natalie taste what it was like to be hated and rejected by everyone, one step at a time.
Sierra thought, ‘If the Sterling family wants to get involved so badly, then fine. I will drag them in, too. It’s not like a few more people would make any difference anyway.’
Jonathan looked downright grim.
Just as Sierra reached for the door, Jonathan caught her wrist out of nowhere.
Sierra jerked her hand back like she’d just brushed up against trash, her disgust written all over her face.
Jonathan’s eyes were unreadable as he said, “I’m not here because of Nat. I came for you.”
Sierra was caught off guard for a moment, but that was it.
When she didn’t respond, Jonathan rushed to add, “Mom and Dad really miss you. They want you home again. Whatever you want, it’s yours.”
Sierra echoed, “Anything I want?” She scoffed.
Jonathan sounded so sure of himself, like he really thought he was some kind of genie who could grant her every wish.
Jonathan added, “As long as you stop going against Nat, I’ll give you whatever you want.”
Sierra thought, ‘Figures. It is always about Natalie.’
If Sierra had heard those words in her previous life, it would’ve crushed her. She was their own flesh and blood, the real daughter of the Sterling family, but every single thing they did was for Natalie, never for her.
“So at the end of the day, it’s always Natalie you care about,” Sierra sneered, her tone icy.
Jonathan figured Sierra was just being jealous. He said, “Sierra, if we bothered to bring you back, obviously we

care about you.”
Jonathan couldn’t help but think back to the very first time he met Sierra.
She was so skinny, but her eyes always shone with sincerity whenever she looked at him.

His stomach was always acting up, so Sierra would get up early to make him breakfast, nagging him not to skip it. She even braved a storm just to deliver his meds, and ended up in a car accident on the way.
Jonathan kept all those memories close to his heart. Back then, he genuinely loved Sierra.
But somewhere along the way, things just changed. Sierra was always at odds with Natalie, always scheming to kick her out.
Sierra never realized the Sterling family had treated Natalie like their precious gem for over twenty years. There’s no way they would just toss her aside after all that.
These past few days, Jonathan kept turning things over in his mind. He thought, ‘From Sierra’s point of view, her jealousy toward Natalie is really just because she never feels safe. It made sense.
‘Maybe this is my sisters.’
chance to make up for some of it. And if I’m lucky, maybe I can fix things between the two
Jonathan’s eyes locked onto Sierra as he said, “I heard you’ve taken in over three thousand stray animals. If you come back home, I’ll pay for everything and make sure they’re all taken care of.”
Sierra said, “I don’t need your help.”
Jonathan said, “Sierra, you’re grown up now. Can you be a little more reasonable? Do you have any idea how much space you need for all those dogs, or how much it costs to feed them every month?”
“Save your concern. I’ve already got a place, and I can cover the costs myself,” Sierra shot back, her voice icy and unyielding.
Jonathan let out a laugh, as he’d just heard a joke. He sneered, “You can cover it yourself? Come on. Your reputation in showbiz is trash. Who knows if you’ll ever land another job? And with your so-called education…”
Jonathan’s words died in his throat. It suddenly hit him: Sierra was actually one of the best at Northbel University.
