Chapter 47

Jonathan froze for a moment, then looked up to see Sierra smirking at him.

Sierra gave a mocking smile and said, “Jonathan, how do you always forget? You can’t even remember what degree I have?”

Jonathan frowned. With all these influential people backing her up, he just couldn’t figure out how Sierra could be this remarkable.

But Sierra was just a kid from out in the sticks, barely went to school, and never had any classmates, friends, or even teachers.

Jonathan thought, ‘Sierra knew the family had misunderstood her, so why didn’t she just clear things up from the start?’

“Are you blaming us?” Jonathan shot back, trying to turn the tables. “Why didn’t you just say you went to Northbel University? We all thought you were.”

“You know now, so there’s no need to explain,” Sierra cut him off sharply, gesturing for him to leave. “Jonathan, there’s nothing left to say between us. Please leave, or I’ll report you for harassment.”

Sierra kept her face blank, but honestly, she couldn’t help but feel a little amused inside.

She’d been with the Sterlings for three months, and ever since she first stepped into the house, Natalie’s subtle digs had made everyone see her as some clueless girl who only made it in showbiz thanks to her looks.

Even after the Sterlings got the wrong idea about her, Sierra had told them more than once that she was still a student.

But the Sterlings just couldn’t be bothered, or were dead set on thinking she was beneath them.

In her previous life, she’d explained herself way too many times. Now, she was done. She couldn’t care less.

‘Whatever. None of this matters to me anymore,’ Sierra thought.

Payton sensed Sierra’s mood shift and got between her and Jonathan, going wild barking at him.

“Forget him, Sierra. Let’s chase him out together,” Payton said, tail wagging furiously.

Sierra reached out and gave Payton a gentle pat on the head.

She did want to get back at the Sterlings, but honestly, she didn’t have the power to really hurt them yet. Trying to take them on now would be like swatting at a giant with a feather, no real damage at all.

Besides, she’d been given a second chance at life, and this time, she had a much greater purpose. Getting tangled up with people like them was just throwing her life away.

“Payton, go open the door. Let’s head home,” Sierra said.

Payton, tongue lolling, dashed over to the door, stood up on his hind legs, and lifted his big paw.

Two beeps later, the door swung open.

Jonathan was so blown away by seeing Payton open the door like a pro, he totally blanked on what he was about to say next.

It wasn’t until Sierra slammed the door shut that Jonathan finally realized what had just happened. He quickly knocked on the door, but nobody inside bothered to answer.

After waiting ages, a flash of impatience crossed Jonathan’s eyes. He kept knocking for a full ten minutes before the elevator finally chimed open.

Two security guards stormed over, one gripping a security fork and the other holding a shield, both looking like they were ready to throw down.

Jonathan was left speechless.

The guard said, “You’re not a resident here. Who the heck are you? If you don’t leave right now, don’t think I won’t use force!”

As he spoke, the guard waved his fork around like he meant business.

Jonathan looked stunned, pointing at Sierra’s door. He asked, “Did Sierra call you guys over?”

The guard just gave him a confused look.

“We don’t know any Sierra,” the guard said. “It was the neighbor from 22-22 who reported you. Said you were causing a ruckus outside some young lady’s door, yelling and rolling around like a madman. So we came to see what was going on.”

‘Yelling and Rolling?’ Jonathan thought, totally stunned by the accusation. His face twisted up like a ruined painting, his whole body shaking with anger.

As the security guards hauled him away, Jonathan shot a glare back, thinking, ‘Just wait till I get home. I’m going to find out exactly who that 22-22 neighbor is.’

Sierra spent two days chilling at home, and oddly enough, the payment for WonderWild Zoo landed in her account just a few days after filming wrapped.

Her paycheck was considered pretty generous in the business; a million per episode, half of it went to the company, and after taxes, she pocketed around 200 to 300 grand.

That was a hefty chunk of cash, but as usual, Sierra just tossed it all into her bank account without a second thought.

Just as she was about to lock it up in a one-year savings account, her phone buzzed with a notification.

Bank sent: [May 1st, 12:00, an instant transfer of 200,000 dollars from your account ending in 0213.]

The rest was cut off; Sierra couldn’t see it. She jumped off the couch, totally stunned by the 200K that had just disappeared from her account out of nowhere.

‘Wait, that’s 200K! Sierra thought, her mind spinning.

“The money hit her account one second, and the next it was like her wallet got squashed flat, Sierra thought, left speechless.

Sierra was so stunned she nearly saw stars. She had no idea where all that cash had gone.

She frantically scrolled through her phone and finally saw it was WonderWild Zoo that took the money.

‘Seriously?’ Sierra thought, utterly stunned.

Sierra couldn’t take it. She immediately asked, “System, what the hell is going on?”

The System answered in its usual robotic monotone, [Host, I am only responsible for providing your rewards and repairing the park and equipment. As for feeding the animals and paying for water and electricity in the real world, you have to handle that yourself.]

The System, usually all cold and mechanical, actually tried to sound cute with that little sound at the end, probably feeling a bit guilty.

But Sierra couldn’t even process what the System was saying anymore; her mind was in total meltdown. For the first time, it felt like the sky was crashing down on her.

With monthly expenses running into the hundreds of thousands, even if she slaved away like a workhorse in the entertainment world, she’d never pull in that kind of cash. Besides, she was dead set on quitting showbiz.

Her savings might keep WonderWild Zoo afloat for a year or two, but there’s no way she could keep it running forever.

Especially with more and more animals coming into the zoo, the expenses were only going to get crazier. She needed to come up with a plan.

Sierra immediately called up Henry and Thomas. The three met at WonderWild Zoo, joined by some familiar faces from the government.

Sierra laid out her financial troubles and asked if the government could help shoulder some of the costs. But the officials just shot each other guilty looks, then all dropped their heads at the same time.

Henry coughed awkwardly. He covered his mouth, took a moment, then said, “Sierra, we totally get what you’re dealing with, but honestly, we’ve got a pretty big problem ourselves.”

Sierra said, “Don’t tell me you can’t get me any funding?”

“You catch on quick,” Henry replied, trying to sweet-talk her.

Sierra just went quiet.

Seeing her reaction, Henry said, “The zoo’s on us, for sure. Whatever funding we can get, we’ll try our best to

help you out. But you know how it is; there’s no way the higher-ups would agree to covering everything.”

Thomas nodded and explained, “Although the zoo is state-backed, the higher-ups can’t always help. Hustralia has many conservation stations, so openly requesting funding would create an imbalance. We must find other income sources.”

For a moment, everyone just sat there in silence. They were all pros at working in the wild, but when it came to making money, they were totally clueless.

Just like Sierra said, if they kept crushing those missions, the zoo would keep leveling up, and the monthly fees would just keep piling up. Maybe they could hold out for a while, but eventually, everything would crash down.

Sure, they could save on water and electricity, but the animals still had to eat a lot.

“Why don’t we start selling tickets to the public, now that WonderWild Zoo’s got animals?” someone said.

Everyone agreed ticket sales could ease the zoo’s finances, but Sierra shut it down immediately. She said, “Visitor routes aren’t mapped, and most rescued animals dislike crowds. Opening now would stress animals and disappoint guests.”

As Sierra spoke, her mind was racing. Suddenly, she said, “Why don’t we start livestreaming as well?”
