Chapter 61

This time, when Sierra headed to Yondeland, she brought Payton along.

When Payton found out, it was so excited that it could barely walk straight. Even when it realized it would be traveling in a pet carrier, it didn’t make a fuss at all.

It just hopped right in, and as Sierra boarded the plane, it watched her with big, hopeful eyes.

Payton would much rather be out with Sierra than stuck in that carrier.

‘Sierra didn’t forget about me this time. That’s awesome,’Payton thought to itself.

The flight touched down at the airport in the morning. As soon as they stepped off the plane, Ethan wasted no time. He grabbed a rental car and drove them straight to where they needed to go.

In the car, Sierra held Payton in her arms, kept shooting Sophie little looks, clearly wanting to say something but holding back.

It was impossible for Sophie not to notice. “Sierra, just say what’s on your mind,” she sighed.

Caught in the act, Sierra sheepishly rubbed her nose to cover up her embarrassment. “I never thought I’d get to partner up with you, Ms. Sloan.”

Sierra was sharp. Last time, when she was tracking down the vehicles used for wildlife trafficking, she had no choice but to blow her cover.

This time, Sophie was assigned to protect her. Sierra figured it probably had something to do with her revealing her identity.

Sierra couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt and didn’t say anything more, but Sophie caught on right away.

Sophie suddenly grinned. “Honestly, I’m happy about it. Protecting you is way easier than chasing down criminals, and this is the path I chose for myself.”

Sierra was caught off guard.

Sophie smiled softly. “The government never forces anyone to do anything. I picked this road myself, so you really don’t need to feel guilty. Actually, I should be the one thanking you.”

Having Sierra around had opened up a brand-new path for Sophie, one she’d never walked before. For her, it was not just a challenge, but also an opportunity. And besides….

Sophie looked at Sierra with a soft, honest smile. “Sierra, I’m really fond of you.”

As soon as she said that, all four guys in the car glanced over at her in unison.

Sophie shot them a direct look, totally confused, and asked straight up, “Why are you all staring at me? What, you don’t like Sierra or something?”

The four guys just went silent.

That funny little scene made everyone relax, and the six of them started to feel more like a real tearn.

By the time they got there, it was right around lunchtime. After grabbing a quick bite, all six of them made their way over to the site.

Since the elephants had been blocking cars and refusing to leave for the past few days, warning signs had been put up right at the entrance to the mountain road.

Sure enough, when Sierra arrived, she could hear the sounds of wild elephants in the jungle, and through the trees, she could just barely make out their dusty gray skin.

elephant was massive, about the size of a small truck. If a herd decided to attack, any cars on the road could easily be in danger.

After parking the car by the side of the road, everyone got out.

From deep in the woods, the elephants’ long trumpeting rang out again.

In no time, seven or eight huge elephants lumbered down a dirt slope, barely half a yard high, and started chasing after the cars all over again.

The local cop showing Sierra around spoke up, “These elephants migrate back to Evergreen Valley every year, and things have always gone smoothly.

“But this year, something’s off. They’re not hurting anyone, and they don’t even cross the road, but they just stand there blocking traffic, refusing to let any cars leave.”

With their habitats shrinking and the environment changing, these elephants had to migrate every year to search for food or change their usual patterns.

The local police and wildlife rangers always stepped in to help the elephants with their migration.

Everything had always gone smoothly in previous years, but this time, nobody knew what was up.

After hearing the local cop, Sierra said, “I’ll go check it out.”

The rest of the team all spoke up at once, “We’ll go too.”

The local cop just stared in disbelief. ‘Are research teams always this bold?’ the cop thought to himself.

While the cop was still baffled, Sierra and the crew just marched straight up to the herd of elephants blocking

traffic.

Sierra sized up the elephants. The moment the elephants noticed humans suddenly in front of them, they froze, going quiet, just staring at Sierra like she was the only thing in the world.

For a moment, it was like a silent showdown, humans and elephants, both sides just staring each other down.

Finally, Sierra fixed her gaze on the most anxious-looking female elephant and said bluntly, “I can understand

what you’re saying.”

The female elephant froze, a look of pure confusion in its eyes.

Sierra continued, “You’ve been blocking the cars. Are you searching for something? Just let me know, and I’ll help you out.”

As soon as she finished speaking, the whole herd let out a thunderous trumpet.

The female elephant Sierra had spoken to suddenly perked up, its eyes going wide and sparkling with surprise. “Human, can you really understand what I’m saying?”

Sierra nodded and slowly reached out her hand toward the elephant’s trunk. “I’m here to help you.”

“That’s wonderful.” The elephant gently wrapped her long trunk around Sierra’s wrist, her voice trembling with excitement. “Can you help me find my baby? My baby’s missing.”

‘Baby?’ Sierra’s mind raced, and she was taken aback.

She couldn’t help but turn to Ethan. “Captain, the mother elephant says its baby’s missing. Do we have any records of new calves in the herd?”

Ethan was caught off guard, too.

Then he shook his head. “Our records show the Monva Herd has sixteen elephants in total, three females and thirteen males. There haven’t been any new calves born in the past few years.”

‘The mother elephant says its baby’s missing, so this calf must have just been born recently, Sierra thought.

Ethan couldn’t hide his excitement. “The Monva Herd hasn’t seen a new calf in nearly eight years. We absolutely have to find that baby elephant.”

There were fewer than forty thousand elephants left in the world, and here in the country, the number was even lower, just under four hundred.

Each one was incredibly valuable, so it was absolutely critical that they found that missing calf.

Sierra felt the same. She leaned in, her voice urgent, “Where did you lose your baby? How long has it been gone?”

The mother elephant answered, “It happened about four days ago. We were exhausted from traveling and stopped to rest for the night. My baby was sleeping right beside me, but when I woke up, it vanished.

“We never meant to block the cars, but I know only humans have the power to help me find my child. I…”

Elephants were far more intelligent than most people gave them credit for.

They knew humans could be trouble, but for the sake of her missing calf, the whole herd was willing to stand with the mother and block the road, risking everything just to get help.

Its anxiety was written all over its face, growing even more intense as it waited for Sierra’s response.

Sierra quickly comforted it, “Rest assured, we’ll do everything we can to find your baby.”

They’d brought a ton of gear with them this time. Right away, everyone pulled out their thermal drones, while Sierra guided the elephant Herd back to the edge of the forest.

But even after the drones had been scanning the jungle for ages, there was still no sign of the baby elephant on the thermal cameras.

Mark was the oldest in the crew, a real veteran when it came to surviving in the wild.

He explained, “Yondeland’s forests are so thick that they block out the sun. In some places, drones just can’t see through. If we want to find that baby elephant, we’ll probably have to head in on foot.”

As soon as the mother elephant and the herd heard that, they eagerly volunteered, “Let us show you the way.”

Right after, the elephant near Sierra knelt, lowering itself to the ground, inviting her to hop onto its back for a ride.

The rest of the crew had all signed NDAs, so they knew exactly what Sierra could do.

Still, when the elephants actually knelt for them to hop on, the team couldn’t help but be blown away.

But with the baby elephant missing for so many days, there was no time to lose.

They didn’t hesitate for a second. Everyone climbed onto the elephants’ backs, letting the herd take them straight to the spot where the little one had vanished.
