The elephant Herd was on the move, fast.

They kept going, taking Sierra and the others deeper into the forest, until they reached a stretch of grass that had been trampled flat by the herd.

After letting Sierra off its back, the mother elephant said, “My baby went missing right here.”

Sierra looked around. This was deep in the wild forest, a place where outsiders rarely set foot.

If humans had anything to do with the baby elephant going missing, it would’ve caused a big scene, and the herd would’ve woken up for sure. So, the baby elephant must’ve wandered off on its own.

Just as Sierra was thinking this, she suddenly heard a faint rustling in the trees above.

She looked up and spotted a golden monkey with a round head, short ears, and a face tinged with blue, cowering in the branches and trying not to be seen.

The little guy was so busy hiding its head that it totally forgot about its rear end, most of its butt, and its long tail were still sticking out.

Sierra could hear it whispering to itself in a crisp little voice, “Humans can’t see me, they can’t see me…”

“Hey, little monkey. Come on down, I just want to ask you something,” Sierra called out.

The little golden monkey panicked. It had noticed the pretty human in front of the very start. There was something about her that made it want to get close, but with so many bad humans in the world, it just

couldn’t risk it.

But when it heard the pretty human talking, it couldn’t help but secretly peek down from the tree. And then it locked eyes with Sierra’s bright, watery gaze.

‘Is that pretty human really talking to me? What do I do? She looks so sweet and kind, but what if she suddenly decides to eat me or something?’ the little golden monkey thought.

It wanted to make a run for it, but Sierra’s stare was like magic. Its feet felt superglued to the branch, and it just couldn’t budge.

Then Sierra flashed it a friendly grin and waved. “Hey, little guy, quit peeking. Yeah, I mean you. I’m talking to you.”

The little golden monkey cocked its head, spacing out for a second.

It wasn’t until it snuggled right up into Sierra’s arms that it realized that it’d just walked straight into the “risk” it was so afraid of.

‘Mom, don’t bother saving me any dinner tonight. Guess I’m the dinner now! it wailed inside, feeling utterly doomed.

“Hey, don’t be afraid, we won’t hurt you,” Sierra said gently, catching the little golden monkey’s nervous vibes and trying to reassure it.

Even if these wild animals felt comfortable around Sierra, their guard was always up. They never really trusted humans.

Sierra didn’t want the little guy to get traumatized or leave with any emotional scars. Thankfully, her words actually calmed the little guy down a bit.

The little monkey blinked its big amber eyes at Sierra, looking a bit spaced out, and finally mumbled, “I… I guess I’m not that scared anymore.”

“Can you tell me if you saw a baby elephant?” Sierra asked.

“Baby elephant?” The little golden monkey blinked. After a couple of seconds of hesitation, it piped up, “You mean Pip?”

Sierra nodded. The missing baby elephant was called Pip. “Pip’s family is looking for it. If you know where it is, can you tell us?” Sierra asked gently.

The little golden monkey glanced at Sierra, then at the elephant herd, and finally nodded emphatically. “I’ve seen Pip. Some bad people chased it, and it fell off a cliff, but it got lucky.

“The spot where it landed was flat. The cliff’s way too high, though, so Pip’s stuck down there. We’re just not strong enough to help it climb back up, so all we can do is bring it some fruit to eat.”

To keep Pip from starving, all of the golden monkeys nearby had been searching everywhere for food, but no matter how much they brought, it was never enough to fill Pip up.

Pip had already eaten all the fruit around there, so now the monkey had to come here, hoping to find something else to eat.

The little golden monkey laid out the whole story, leaving nothing out. But everyone picked up on something strange.

This was a thick, wild forest, crawling with wild animals. No way the local villagers would ever dare to go that deep.

‘How could there possibly be people out here?’ Sierra wondered.

But the little golden monkey was adamant, “There are humans, for real. Pip said it smelled some super sweet water at a villager’s place, but its mom wouldn’t let it drink any.

“So, it snuck out at night, thinking it’d be back by morning to join the herd for the migration. But after drinking that water, it got all woozy and ended up getting lost.

“It wandered right into a human base, and when the humans chased it off, it accidentally fell down the cliff.”

The little golden monkey puffed up with pride. “I’ve lived here my whole life, so I can swear Pip’s not lying.

“There’s a huge house hidden in the woods, and the humans inside are super weird. They always wear the

The little guy was a total chatterbox. It was so caught up in talking that it didn’t even notice Sierra’s face growing more and more grim.

Sophie noticed and hurried over. “Sierra, what did it say? You look really upset.”

“Ms. Sloan, we need to call the police, right now,” Sierra said urgently.

Still cradling the little golden monkey, Sierra turned to face the group, her expression dead serious. “I suspect someone’s running a drug lab out here.”
