Chapter 63
Sierra couldn’t be blamed for overthinking this.

Yondeland’s border stretched for 2,500 miles, connecting with several countries, so it was only natural that various groups or forces would try to sneak in.
Even with the border guards and police on high alert day and night, there were always a few who managed to slip through the cracks.
If Sierra’s suspicions were right, these people were seriously gutsy.
Ethan, Sophie, and the others all looked serious.
Sophie had just pulled out her satellite phone when the little guy in Sierra’s arms piped up, “You probably won’t make it in time. I saw them packing up and getting ready to leave when I came over to find food for Pip today.”
Everyone froze. They hadn’t expected these people to move so fast.
Sierra quickly figured it out and said, “The Monva Herd has been tracking them. These guys are smart.
“They know that if a baby elephant goes missing, the local police will get involved. Once they head into the deep forest, their location will definitely be exposed.”
Sophie didn’t hesitate after hearing that. She stepped aside to call the police and explain the situation.
There were only six of them, and they had no idea if the other side was armed. Their first priority had to be staying safe.
Sierra said, “Let’s go check on the baby elephant first.”
The six of them climbed onto the elephants’ backs, with the little golden-furred monkey leading the way, heading straight for the cliff where Pip had taken its tumble.
Before they even got close, Sierra could hear the baby elephant’s soft, anxious muttering floating up from down below. “Wah, my feet are all numb. I’m so scared. Mama, where are you?”
Looking down, Sierra spotted a small baby elephant sprawled on a ledge sticking out from the cliff.
The drop was dozens of feet high, and Pip had lucked out landing there. But with the cliff nearly vertical, hauling a newborn two-hundred-pound baby elephant up was a whole other challenge.
Pip seemed to catch the scent of its herd and instantly lifted its head, gazing up at the clitt
Its big, baby-soft ears perked up, and it called out right away. “Mama, did you find humans to save me? I’m so hungry. The fruit that little monkey gave me barely fills me up.”
Sierra was at a loss for words.

The little monkey had stripped every fruit-bearing branch nearby, and yet this baby elephant was still hungry.
Sierra squinted at the ledge beneath Pip, unable to judge how sturdy it was. She called down gently, “Pip, hang tight and stay right there, okay? We’ll figure out a way to get you back up soon.”
As Sierra spoke, her eyes landed on the big tree nearby, and an idea popped into her head.
Sierra said, “I’ll climb down and secure the baby elephant with a rope. Then I’ll have the herd pull him up.”
Hauling the baby elephant up was way out of their league, but for the herd, it was a piece of cake.
Ethan cut in, “Sierra, you stay up here and keep Pip from freaking out. Alex and I will handle the climb.”
Ethan’s tone made it clear he wasn’t up for debate. Sierra knew everyone else here had way more wilderness experience than she did, and she wasn’t the type to act tough. Sierra just nodded and agreed.
Sierra and the elephant herd stayed close, comforting Pip until it finally relaxed. As Ethan and Alex started climbing down, Pip kept its gaze locked on Sierra’s face, its big eyes blinking, not wanting to look away for a second.
Just a moment ago, Pip had felt like this two-legged human was a miracle walking into its world. Now, seeing her return with a rope, she seemed like some legendary savior come to rescue it.
Pip gave its trunk a little shake, thinking, ‘Meeting such a kind human made all the trouble these past few days totally worth it.’
Pip didn’t fuss at all, letting Ethan and Alex wrap him up in ropes, and then patiently waiting as Sierra called the herd to haul him up.
The herd pulled from above, and Pip, ever the clever one, scrambled up the cliff using all four legs.
But once it was safely back up, instead of rushing straight to its mom, it crept behind Sierra, its trunk hanging low, trying not to get noticed.
Everyone was left scratching their heads, wondering what was up with him.
But soon enough, they saw the mother elephant let out a loud call and storm over to Pip, who was hiding behind Sierra. With a dramatic swing of her trunk and a firm kick, Pip instantly dropped to its knees.
The mother elephant grumbled, “Pip, I told you not to sneak off and drink the humans’ wine, but you just had to do it. If we hadn’t run into a human who actually understands us today, you’d be done for.”
She couldn’t help herself and gave Pip’s backside a sharp smack with her trunk.
The rest of the herd kept glancing everywhere but at the scene, doing their best to ignore the mother elephant disciplining Pip.
Ethan and the others quickly turned away, pretending nothing was happening.
Sierra could only shake her head, feeling a bit helpless.

Even if the others couldn’t understand elephant-speak, it was clear Pip felt guilty for worrying the herd. Sneaking behind Sierra was just its way of hoping she’d bail it out.
But its mom was a real hothead, and the elephants had their own parenting style, definitely not something humans should mess with.
So, Pip ended up totally subdued by its mom, giving Sierra the saddest puppy eyes, silently begging her to save it.
Once Sierra saw Pip had gotten enough of a scolding from its mom, she waved it over. “Pip, come here. I’ve got a question for you.”
The mother elephant instantly stopped her lecture and nudged Pip toward Sierra with her trunk. “The lady who helped you is asking something. Just answer whatever she says. You hear me?”
Pip nodded obediently.
He shuffled over to Sierra, making a soft little sound with his trunk.
It was still just a baby, covered in a layer of fuzzy hair, and looked absolutely tiny next to the adult elephants. Sierra couldn’t resist giving its fuzzy little head a gentle rub.
Before Sierra could even get a word out, Pip piped up, “Hey, miss, I really like you. Thanks for saving me. There’s something really important I want to give you.”
With that, Pip scampered off into the jungle, snuffling and rooting around with its trunk and head.
In no time, he trotted back, clutching a black box in his trunk, and dropped it right at Sierra’s feet.
“After I drank some homemade wine from the villagers, I accidentally stumbled into those humans’ house.
“I ended up finding this thing, but it smelled awful, so I wanted to get rid of it. But when those people saw me with their stuff, they started hitting me.” Pip sounded more and more miserable as it went on.
He actually planned to toss it while running away, but when the humans started chasing him, he panicked and forgot all about it.
After a few days of misery, Pip regretted it so much.
He nudged the box a little closer with his trunk. “I promise I’ll never take other people’s stuff again, Miss. Here, I’m giving it back.”
The black box was about eighteen inches across, and even Pip had a tough time trying to haul it around. No one could figure out how he managed to drag it along while being chased.
Sierra walked over and picked up the box, but her expression changed in an instant.
The box had a corner that was busted open, and as Sierra lifted it, a plastic bag filled with white powder
tumbled out.
Sophie caught on right away and shouted, “Sierra, don’t move.”

Sierra froze in place as Sophie rushed over, crouched down to inspect the box, then shot everyone a meaningful look. “Wait for the cops. Nobody touch anything until they get here.”
The box had to weigh at least forty or fifty pounds. If the police traced this back, those drug dealers were totally doomed.
They were just about to wait for the cops when there was a sudden stir in the treetops.
Up in the branches, hundreds of golden monkeys were swinging through the jungle, making a beeline for them.
The little golden monkey in Sierra’s arms lit up, pointing at the incoming troop. “Look. My whole family’s here, grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, everybody.”
Just then, a burly golden monkey dropped down and grabbed Sierra’s pants, sounding frantic. “Bad news. We just saw a dozen huge humans coming this way.
“They look like they’re searching for something, and they’re packing heat. Seriously, you need to get out of here now.”
Ever since the little golden monkey got scooped up by Sierra, the whole monkey troop had been tagging along behind the elephants, keeping quiet.
But then they noticed the same humans who’d chased after Pip before were now heading straight their

way.
But weirdly enough, those humans didn’t seem worried at all. They just stood there among the trees, not moving at all.
Sierra gave Pip a gentle pat and grinned. “Pip, how would you like endless bananas and sugarcane, so much that you could never finish them?”
Pip’s eyes grew huge, its soft trunk reaching up toward the sky, and uts mouth parted in anticipation. “I want that.”
Sierra asked, “And do you want to get back at those humans who hurt you before?”
Pip nodded eagerly, but remembering she was human, too, then paused, glancing at Sierra, unsure. “Is that really okay?”
Elephants were way smarter than most animals.
From a young age, they knew that humans weren’t all good, and there were plenty of bad ones, too.
Some humans helped them migrate, but others would hack off their tusks and cut them open.
That was why elephants never went looking for trouble with humans.
Humans were terrifying creatures.

Pip glanced nervously at its mom, then at Sierra, and finally said, “We’ve already given up so much of our land to humans, but they’re never satisfied.”
Elephants deserved the right to live, too.
The more Pip thought about it, the angrier it got. Finally, it huffed, “That’s not fair.”
Sierra listened to Pip, then shot a glance at the drug dealers creeping closer in the distance. Her voice was calm, but there was steel in it as she said, “Then let’s crush them beneath your feet.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, the elephant herd erupted in a chorus of trumpeting calls that shook the entire jungle.
