Chapter 68

Pip’s life was saved.

:

Sierra couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement and relief.

Pip had just come out of surgery, and the anesthesia was still wearing off.

When it saw Sierra crying, Pip instinctively wanted to wipe the tears from the beautiful human’s face with its trunk, but its trunk was numb and could only twitch a little.

Then it felt like its body wasn’t even its own anymore, like someone had stitched its skin and muscles back together; everything felt tight and strange.

Pip started to panic. “Pretty lady, what happened to me? Where’s my mom?”

If Sierra hadn’t been there, Pip would’ve tried to scramble up and dash out right away.

The unfamiliar environment made Pip feel a little scared.

Sierra quickly wiped away her tears and gently stroked Pip’s soft trunk. “You got hurt by a truck yesterday, sweetie, so you need to stay here and get better. It might take a long time before you can see your mom again.”

Sierra had read the vet’s report from yesterday. Pip would need at least a year to recover.

Pip started to freak out when he heard that.

“I-I didn’t mean to go under the humans’ truck. I just wanted to grab some sugarcane that fell off, and somehow I ended up under the truck,” Pip whimpered.

Pip might be mischievous, but it was actually pretty smart.

Mom always warned Pip not to go near roads with cars, and it always tried to be careful when crossing. But he didn’t expect that he would still get hit.

‘Mom and the whole herd must be worried sick about me,’ Pip thought, feeling anxious. ‘And when I get back, Mom’s definitely gonna give me a good scolding, maybe even a spanking.’

Just thinking about all this made Pip feel miserable, and it started bawling, sobbing, and wailing without holding back.

Next to them, Sophie couldn’t understand what Pip was saying, but she could tell the little elephant was crying its heart out.

What really caught her off guard was just how noisy and pitiful an elephant’s crying could be.

‘Never thought I’d see an elephant cry like that,’ Sophie thought.

treatment before finally leaving.

She hadn’t slept in twenty-four hours, and her body was exhausted, but her mind was buzzing with energy.

Even after washing up, Sierra just couldn’t fall asleep.

Thinking about the reward the System had just given her, Sierra hopped into WonderWild Zoo. When she got back to her room, sure enough, the reward was right there, just like the System said.

She was already wide awake, and after seeing this, there was no way she was getting any sleep now.

“System, I don’t think any of these surgical cases have ever happened before. Is this the level of medical technology in your world?” Sierra asked.

The System replied, [That’s right. The world I come from is thousands of years more advanced than Earth. Problems you can’t solve here are nothing in my world.]

Sierra got it right away.

Back when she was in showbiz, she always had to keep up with all the trending franchises, and she’d read tons of space-age webnovels. So wrapping her head around what the System was saying was a breeze.

She didn’t want to bother figuring out where the System came from or what era it was from.

For her, just being able to use the System to get rewards and understand what the furry critters were saying was more than enough.

Sierra spent ages in the System’s zoo, browsing through the surgery compendium. When she finally realized it was time to go, she reluctantly logged out, wishing she could stay longer.

She needed to go tell the elephant herd what was up with Pip.

Ethan and the crew were already waiting outside her room. When they saw how bloodshot Sierra’s eyes looked, everyone stared in surprise.

“Sierra, you didn’t sleep at all?” Ethan asked, concern in his voice.

Sierra shook her head. She was way too wired to sleep right now,

“Not sleeping is totally normal,” Timothy chuckled. “Remember when we ran into those poachers in Coliburg? I was so freaked out that I didn’t sleep a wink for two days straight.”

As soon as he finished, Timothy got smacked on the back of his head.

He yelped, giving Ethan a betrayed look. Ethan was always the one whacking him from behind.

Ethan shot him a glare. “Quit staring. It’s not the same at all. You were just being a scaredy-cat.”

Timothy had no comeback for that.

With Timothy as the team’s resident jokester, things always felt a lot more relaxed.

They drove up to the same mountain as yesterday, and sure enough, the elephant herd was already waiting quietly on both sides of the road.

Maybe they picked up Sierra’s scent, or maybe they recognized the car Sierra and the others were in.

As soon as the car pulled over, the elephants started trumpeting, as if warning the passing vehicles that they were about to cross the road.

Sure enough, the cars that had been driving along started to slow down and creep past.

With the matriarch leading the way, the herd hurried over to Sierra, eager to see her.

The matriarch curled her trunk and gently brushed Sierra’s head. “Miss, how is Pip?”

They had been waiting here since yesterday, hoping for an update from Sierra.

Sierra said, “Pip’s injuries are really serious. For the best chance at recovery, I want to let her stay at my zoo for a year. And when you migrate next year, I’ll make sure Pip comes home to you.”

Elephants have memories that humans can only dream of.

Even decades later, the herd would remember every detail, the line of drivers clearing the road after the accident, and the truck driver stubbornly refusing to let anyone help.

But what would stay with them most was the traumatic scene of Pip being caught under the wheels.

If Pip hadn’t made it through the night, it would have left a lifelong wound in the hearts of the herd.

That was why Sierra was set on making sure Pip returned to them next summer, whole and healthy.

Sierra thought she’d have to spend a while convincing them.

But before she could say more, the matriarch gently nudged her with her trunk and rumbled softly, “We know Pip will be safe with you. Next summer, we’ll be right here, waiting for you both.”

Then the matriarch rested her trunk gently against Sierra’s cheek and said softly, “Thank you, Miss.”

Monva Herd still needed to move on and continue their migration.

Knowing Sierra would be taking care of Pip, the elephants could rest easy and promised they’d come back for her during next year’s migration.

Back at the sanctuary, when Pip heard it could go to the big city with Sierra, it instantly forgot all about its aches and pains.

If Pip weren’t such a big little guy, it would’ve rolled over and sprung up in a flash.

Pip wiggled its trunk with all its might, eyes sparkling. “This is the best. The little monkeys told me there are mountains of bananas at the zoo, but I love sugarcane even more.

“Sierra, can I have sugarcane every single day? Please?”

After just one day, Pip was already perking up. It even hooked its trunk around Sierra’s leg, giving her the ultimate puppy eyes.

Sierra was a total sucker for anything fluffy. Even if Pip’s baby fuzz was a little rough, those pure, adorable brown eyes melted her heart. She said yes without a second thought.

‘Who cares? We’re about to have an elephant at WonderWild Zoo. Let it eat all the sugarcane it wants, Sierra thought.

Pip’s injuries were still pretty serious, so it had to wait for the sanctuary staff to give the all-clear before it could make the trip to WonderWild Zoo.

When Pip realized Sierra couldn’t stay by its side all the time, it felt like the whole world was crashing down.

Pip clung to Sierra, crying and begging her not to go.

Sierra said helplessly, “But I have to go back and get your room all set up for you, sweetie. Don’t you want to have a big, spacious room waiting for you at the zoo?”

Pip blinked up at her with wide, hopeful eyes.

‘Of course, I do,’ Pip thought. ‘Not just a cozy room, I want all the tasty treats, too.

Sierra kept painting a rosy picture for Pip, “And since you love sugarcane so much, when I get back, I’m going to plant a whole field of it just for you at WonderWild Zoo.

“You can munch on as much as you want, anytime you like.”

Pip was completely hooked.

It was already imagining itself nestled in a pile of sugarcane, drifting off to sleep.

‘So happy, and so blissful, Pip thought.

Pip nodded eagerly. “Go on, Sierra, hurry back. Don’t waste time hanging around here.”

Then it did its best to nudge Sierra out the door with its trunk, eager for her to get going.

Pip was terrified that if Sierra didn’t hurry back, it would miss out on all its precious sugarcane,

Ethan and the crew were struggling to hold back their laughter.

Even if they couldn’t understand a word, just watching Sierra and Pip fussing around, they could pretty much figure out what was up.

Pip, still so naive, had no clue that by the time it finally made it to the zoo, all that sugarcane it was dreaming about would already be gone.
