For a moment, it was like everyone online felt their hearts clench so tight they couldn’t even breathe.
Sierra’s words hit them for the first time. Human scientific progress is built on the sacrifice of countless animals.
[Let me tell you something even more shocking. Some experimental dogs are cut open alive, and even after they’re dead, they’re not buried. Instead, they’re sold off for next to nothing as dog meat.]
[There was a time we did a blast injury study. We put a dozen beagles in different positions, put them under anesthesia, and placed them in water before detonating TNT.
[The result? A dozen beagles died on the spot, and the last one suffered lung hemorrhage and died in pain twenty-four hours later.
[I get that, as a scientist, I have to harden my heart for the sake of human progress, but seeing those dogs go out like that still hurts.]
[Back in the lab, if no one claimed the beagles, they’d be euthanized. That was the first time one of them ever got out of its cage. The little guy bounced around, happy as could be, for just one minute.]
The lucky beagles got a second chance from humans. The unlucky ones forgave humans instead.
Buddy’s owner was crying her eyes out, tears and snot streaming down her face. “Buddy had never been out of the cage before, so even after coming home, she still doesn’t know where to do her business. From now on, I’ll make sure to treat her right.”
After saying that, the owner gently stroked Buddy’s head.
After ending the call, Sierra went live again.
After the whole stream, it was already 3:30 in the morning. Sierra just said she was logging off, and the next second, the stream went dark.
The chat didn’t want to log off yet, but her longtime fans were already used to it.
At least this time, Sierra streamed for a whole six hours, way longer than the last two times, when she dipped
out in under two.
After logging off, Sierra went to wash up, planning to get up early tomorrow to see how Quickie, Angel, and Milo were doing.
She picked up her phone, about to head into the bathroom, when she spotted a new message on WhatsApp.
It was from Henry.
Henry was worried that she’d forget to pick up her diploma, so he sent a reminder, three days to go.
That was when Sierra remembered, she’d just finished all her credits ahead of time. As per the official

schedule, she wouldn’t be able to pick up her diploma until July.

She couldn’t help but feel relieved that she got her second chance after her thesis defense. If she’d come back before that, she probably would’ve had to put off graduation.
Thinking about it, Sierra quickly replied to Henry, washed up, and went straight to bed.
The next day, Sierra headed straight to the bird enclosure to check on Quickie.
Quickie’s mental state had improved a lot. She still had a habit of pulling out her feathers now and then, but it was nothing compared to how bad it used to be.
As soon as Sierra finished sanitizing and stepped into the glass enclosure, Quickie bounced out of her nest, darting around like a runaway chicken.
“Sierra, you finally came to see me,” Quickie chirped.
Quickie chirped twice, then hopped up onto Sierra’s shoulder.
A soft layer of pale yellow fluff had sprouted on her head. Quickie pressed her whole body against Sierra and chirped loudly, “Sierra, this bird missed you so much.”
Sierra let Quickie hop onto her palm, and with her other hand, she couldn’t resist poking the bird’s head. “I missed you, too.”
Sierra thought back to the surgery manual System had handed her. It even had a whole section on how to treat bird fractures.
“Quickie, you’ve got to behave and stick to your diet. Give it three months, and I’ll help you get your wing fixed up, alright?” Sierra promised.
Quickie froze, those big, shiny black eyes growing even wider. “Really? You mean it?”
Quickie was in total disbelief.
Back when Sierra told her that her wing was too messed up and hadn’t gotten treated in time, Quickie figured she’d probably have to live like this forever.
She wasn’t heartbroken or anything, but she couldn’t help feeling a bit disappointed inside.
She was just a bird, and whenever she saw the others flying up in the sky, she couldn’t help but feel a little jealous.
“If I really can, of course, I want to.” Quickie flapped her tiny, injured wing and chirped loudly, “I believe in
you, Sierra.”
Quickie was just a simple little thing, so innocent.
She didn’t ask anything; she just looked up at Sierra with those big, adoring eyes, full of trust.
With Quickie trusting her so much, Sierra’s heart felt all warm and fuzzy. She put Quickie back in her nest

and promised, “I’ll do my best.”
“Sierra, you’re the best,” Quickie chirped.
Quickie was super supportive, totally backing her up.

Sierra smiled, thinking to herself, ‘Once I’ve mastered every single thing in that surgery manual System gave me, I swear I’ll get Quickie’s wing fixed, no matter what.’
Yesterday, she tried to bring the surgery manual out of System, but in the end, she was the only one who could leave.
After asking the System, Sierra realized the rewards were for her alone. If she wanted to take the surgery knowledge out into the real world, she’d have to learn it all by heart herself.
So whenever Sierra had a free moment, she couldn’t wait to dive back into System to study.
The sooner she mastered those skills, the fewer animals would have to suffer or die because of sickness or human cruelty.
After playing with Quickie for a while, Sierra went to check on Angel and Milo.
Angel didn’t even have time to feel down these days. Those three pandas just wouldn’t leave her alone; they kept chattering in her ear nonstop. She’d chase them off one day, and they’d be back the next.
Now, Angel spent her days trying to avoid them.
As for Milo, with those two wolf brothers taking care of him, he was living like a king. When Sierra checked Milo’s weight records, she couldn’t help but blurt out, “Holy crap.”
From the day he was rescued to his last weigh-in, Milo had packed on a whopping 10 pounds.
But the real kicker was, Sierra realized Milo was totally hopeless at hunting in the wild.
The Sierra tossed a big goose into Milo’s enclosure to see if he could hunt it down.
But after chasing that goose around for four hours straight, trying to bite it, Milo ended up getting pecked and bullied by the goose instead, and to top it off, he got so hungry he nearly passed out from low blood
sugar.
Sierra just felt emotionally drained.
She could already picture her future, pure chaos, with her scrambling around like a headless chicken trying to keep up with all the madness.

Before she knew it, the day to pick up her diploma had arrived.
Sierra had streamed twice in the meantime, but after splitting the tips with the platform and paying taxes, she barely made 10 thousand.

Even so, Sierra was still satisfied.

That money wouldn’t even make a dent in the zoo’s daily expenses, but it was better than nothing.
But in a few months, the zoo would have to open its doors to the public and start charging admission.
As Sierra gathered the documents she needed for her trip to Northbel University, she couldn’t help but think about when the zoo should finally open.
She even considered finding a fortune teller to pick the perfect day for the grand opening.
She never used to believe in that stuff, but ever since she got a second chance at life, she couldn’t help but feel a little more respectful of the supernatural.
Before long, Sierra pulled up to Northbel University in her car.
She walked onto campus and stopped in front of the veterinary medicine building, her mind going blank for
a moment.
Just as she was about to step inside, Sierra suddenly heard a heated argument break out behind her.
She turned around just in time to see two guys rush by, one chasing the other.
The guy in the back was handsome and fresh-faced, running fast and shouting as he went, “Guys, help me stop him. The one in front is a cat abuser.”
Right after he yelled, a helpful student sneakily stuck out a foot and tripped the runner, sending him sprawling.
The guy in the back body-slammed the cat abuser, pinning him down and giving him a solid smack across the face.
“Damn. Finally got you. Keep running. Why don’t you?” he shouted.
Sierra stood off to the side, listening, and the guy’s voice sounded more and more familiar.
She walked over to get a better look, her eyes widening in surprise.
‘Wait a sec, isn’t that the college kid who thought a fox was a dog? Ryan,’ Sierra realized.
Sierra glanced at the guy pinned to the ground and let out a chuckle. ‘Hey, all familiar faces, Sierra thought.
