Chapter 72

Chapter 72

Robert had some sense of responsibility, just not a lot.

Sierra was one of the school’s top graduates and now had a government job, serving the country. The teachers always spoke highly of her. So, even though Robert thought Sierra shouldn’t have hit anyone, he assumed there had to be a reason.

After saying that, Robert turned to Nick, frowning. He asked, “So, what exactly happened?”

Nick’s smile hadn’t even faded before Robert’s words hit him. His face instantly fell, and a wave of guilt and anxiety washed over him.

Nick thought, ‘He wants me to explain? What the hell am I supposed to say now?’

He’d been caught in the act of abusing a cat.

Maybe he could’ve spun some story with his classmates, but now that it had blown up in front of Robert, there was no way he could cover it up or talk his way out of this mess.

Seeing Nick too scared to speak up, Ryan snorted coldly, his eyes full of disdain. He called out loudly, “Mr. Morgan, all those cats that went missing from our school? Nick took them and killed them himself.

“I staked him out for a whole month, and even got his roommate to check his dorm. We found the skins of kittens he’d skinned and stuffed in his closet.”

“I didn’t!” Nick blurted out, his voice shaky as he tried to deny it on instinct.

His family ran a pet business. If this got out, they would be screwed. Nick thought, I can’t let anyone find out, no matter what.’

Seeing Nick’s panicked face, Sierra said calmly, “We’ve got eyewitnesses and hard evidence. If you want to defend yourself. you’d better show us some real proof.”

Before Nick could get a word out, Sierra gave him a cold, mocking glance. She added, “Don’t tell me you’re about to say Ryan went out of his way to set you up just to frame you?”

Nick froze, the words dying on his lips.

Ryan snorted with disbelief. He snapped, “Why would I bother framing you? We’ve got no bad blood. Face it, you’re just messed up and like hurting animals.

“Now you’re scared because you got caught? Where was all that fear when you were abusing those cats and dogs?”

Nick was totally shut down, panic flooding his face. He glanced at Robert, whose face was thunderous, and scrambled to defend himself.

Nick said, “Mr. Morgan, please, you have to believe me. I didn’t do it!”

“Cut the crap. The cat you abused is in the hospital right now, and you’re still trying to deny it?” Ryan snapped, his voice dripping with contempt.

Ryan was the type who couldn’t stand seeing anyone get away with it. Nick could beg for mercy all he wanted, but Ryan was determined to report everything.

Ryan whipped out his phone and thrust it at Robert, showing him the shocking photos of the cat’s injuries.

Robert’s face went pale when he saw the photos, and he instantly realized just how serious this was. He demanded. All of you, get to my office, now!”

Chapter 72

Nick’s head shot up, panic written all over his face. He knew there was no way out; he was totally screwed..

He protested. “What about Sierra? Even if I did something wrong, she went and attacked me like this! Isn’t that against the law? Shouldn’t Northbel University punish someone like her?”

Ryan felt something wasn’t right. He started, “Those injuries? I’m the one who…”

“Yeah, I hit you. So what?” Sierra suddenly cut in, her voice full of mockery. She said, “Why don’t you take me to court if you’re so tough?”

“You!” Nick sputtered, too angry for words. He couldn’t believe that after just a few months, Sierra was as if she’d swapped out her soul for a new one.

Sierra used to be so timid and scared, and she wouldn’t even dream of stepping into stuff like this. But ever since she lost Payton, Sierra was acting like a completely different person.

Nick thought, ‘Did losing Payton really flip a switch in her?”

Even though Robert tried to keep things quiet, it took less than an hour for the news to start spreading in small circles around campus, gaining momentum by the minute.

After all, Sierra was always the center of attention. Any news about her instantly drew a crowd; people just had to know what was going on.

Nick’s parents had already rushed over to Robert’s office.

As for Ryan, both his parents had died serving, and the rest of his family was overseas: none of them could make it back in time.

Sierra hadn’t expected Robert to actually call the Sterlings.

Jonathan and Shawn both showed up.

When Nick saw them, his face went ghostly pale. He thought, ‘Didn’t Nat say Sierra wasn’t even close with her family? So why did both Sterling brothers show up?”

Jonathan scanned the office, searching for Sierra.

Before he could get a word out, Shawn griped, “Sierra, do you have to stir up trouble every single day?”

Sierra didn’t even look their way. She shot back, “Who asked you guys to come?”

Shawn was choked up, couldn’t get a word out.

No matter what, Sierra was still his sister. Even if Shawn wasn’t her biggest fan, family was family.

So when he found out he and Jonathan were listed as her emergency contacts at school, he thought it over and dropped everything to rush over. But Sierra couldn’t care less.

Shawn was so mad that he felt like hitting someone. He scoffed, “Sierra, keep acting tough. If you didn’t want Jonathan and me showing up, then why’d you list our numbers as your contacts?”

Sierra was at a loss for words. That was ages ago. She honestly couldn’t even remember putting down the Sterling brothers phone numbers.

But despite Shawn’s expression, Sierra just looked at him with icy detachment. She said. “It’s just some unimportant numbers. I’ll change it next time. You can leave now.”

Sat,

Hearing that, Shawn totally lost it. He snapped, “Unimportant? Sierra, do you even have any conscience left?”

He fumed inwardly, ‘I gave up work for her, and she doesn’t appreciate it at all.

Jonathan studied Sierra in silence for a moment before finally looking at Robert. He asked, “Excuse me, can you tell me what my sister supposedly did wrong here?”

Before Robert could reply, Nick’s mother, Clara, suddenly burst out, jabbing a finger at Sierra and screaming. “It was Sierra who did this to my boy!”

An hour had gone by, and Nick’s face was so battered and bruised that it was hard to even look at him.

Jonathan pressed, “Can you tell me why my sister would hit your son?”

Clara was stunned, unable to respond for a moment.

Jonathan continued, his tone unwavering, “Clearly, Nick must’ve done something so wrong that even Sierra couldn’t stand by and watch. That’s why she hit him. Regardless, our family will cover all of Nick’s medical bills and any related expenses.”

Sierra shot Jonathan a look, unable to help herself. She thought, ‘Unbelievable, he’s actually defending me. Did he get possessed or something?’

If this had happened in her previous life, Sierra probably would’ve bawled her eyes out from gratitude. But now? She just felt nothing.

Sierra’s face grew cold. She wasn’t buying Jonathan’s act at all. She said, “I’ll handle my own business.”

All she cared about was living her own life; she wanted absolutely nothing to do with the Sterlings in this lifetime.

Sierra’s expression made it crystal clear: she was shutting them out.

Jonathan’s brows furrowed as he got lost in thought.

These days, he kept having dreams about Sierra. In those dreams, none of this mess had ever happened. Sierra was still the same as before: always sweet to her family, not the spiky, hard-to-approach person she’d become now.

And she would look up to him with eyes full of admiration.

But now in reality, whenever she glanced his way, all he could see was straight-up disgust.
