Chapter 79
Chapter 79
Timothy quickly realized that streaming wasn’t as easy as he’d thought.
Figuring every bit of extra cash helped, he decided to give it a shot, just like Sierra.

He held his phone up in the car for ages, only to find the connection was a total disaster, and there were just three people in his stream.
One was his mom, one was his dad, and the third was his little brother, probably slacking off in class.
Meanwhile, Sierra was having a totally different experience.
Maybe she’s just lucky or something, but her signal was way better than his. As soon as she hit ‘start,’ thousands of viewers flooded in, and within half an hour, her stream was holding steady at fifty thousand people.
Timothy wiped away a fake tear and muttered to himself, “Seriously, comparing yourself to others is just asking for heartbreak.”
Alex, sitting nearby, quipped dryly, “There’s a rescue rope in the back. Need me to grab you one so you can hang yourself?”
Timothy dramatically clutched his chest and pointed at everyone. He said, “You guys are savage.”
Timothy’s antics had everyone in the car cracking up.
Sierra was totally focused on her stream, and when she noticed the chat blowing up with questions about who was in the car, she replied, “They’re all my teammates.”
Then she continued, “I’ll probably be streaming like this pretty often from now on. Whenever I’m off duty, I’ll share some cool facts about the local culture and wildlife with you all.”
Mount Kaelenridge was over 620 miles from Lake Sylvenmir. While Sierra was streaming, the team was using drones to search for the Kaelenridge Sheep.
But they came up empty-handed every time.

After the tragedy that struck the Kaelenridge Sheep before, the whole herd was too spooked to show themselves. It was almost like they knew humans were out there searching for them, so they kept out of sight, deliberately avoiding any
contact.
As the hours ticked by and evening rolled in, the night sky over Mount Kaelenridge was blanketed with stars. The team set up their tents under a weathered rock formation, and Sierra fired up the stove to start cooking.
This was just how it was in the wild: roughing it was the norm, and there was no such thing as a cushy life out here.
Soon, the smell was so good it made everyone’s stomach growl. They all stared, eyes wide, as Sierra tossed sliced kielbasa, onions, and bell peppers into the hot cast-iron skillet.
Timothy blurted out, “Wow, Sierra, I didn’t know you could cook,”
Sierra shrugged, her voice easy. She said, “My foster parents were always drinking and gambling when I was a kid, so I had to cook for myself just to fill my belly.”
Then Sierra scooped up some kielbasa with her spatula and handed it around.
The wildlife rescue team didn’t hesitate. They just grabbed a piece and stuffed it in their mouths.
The delicious flavor blossomed on their taste buds, and even Sophie’s eyes lit up with delight.

Timothy was so blown away that he actually jumped up. He exclaimed, “Sierra, how did you make this taste so freaking good? Damn, we’re in for some good eats from now on!”
As soon as he finished, he clutched his head and instinctively darted to the side, like he was expecting Ethan to smack him again.
Ethan just looked at him, speechless, but didn’t bother to argue.
“We’ll help you out next time,” Ethan said.
Sierra didn’t turn him down. She smiled and said, “Honestly, it wasn’t always this tasty. I grew up so far out in the sticks that the only neighbors were ridge after ridge, each one hiding the next.
“As a kid, just getting the wok hot enough for a stir-fry felt like winning an Olympic medal. It wasn’t until I started making money from acting that I got to try all sorts of dishes I’d never even seen before.
“I started following recipes online, and bit by bit, I got the hang of it. If you guys are into it, I’ll cook for you whenever you want.”
Timothy nodded right away. He said, “Sure! But seriously, I never would’ve pegged your parents as the gambling and drinking type. With all that cash, how come they never even hired a nanny?”
But then something clicked, and he abruptly shut his mouth..
A hush fell over the air, thick and sudden.
Timothy didn’t dare look at Sierra, so he snuck a glance at Ethan instead.
Ethan looked like he was ready to murder him.
That was the moment Timothy realized he’d really messed up. He’d just blurted out the worst thing possible.
He wanted to kick himself. He thought, ‘Why do I always have to run my mouth?
‘Way to go, me. Had to bring up her painful past, now look what I’ve done.’
Timothy was on the verge of tears, head down and voice trembling as he stammered, “Sierra, please don’t be mad. I-I just talk too fast.”
Sierra said, “It’s really okay. Honestly, if I’m talking about it, it means I’m over it. Now I get to do what I love, and that’s all I need.”
She had known too many unfinished stories in her previous life; that was why this one felt like the first time anyone ever handed her a happy ending.
Sierra didn’t want Timothy to feel bad, so she looked him in the eye, her face serious. She said, “I really mean it.”
Seeing that Sierra wasn’t just saying it to make him feel better, Timothy finally let out a sigh of relief.
But he still felt a vague sense of doubt lingering in his mind.
He thought, ‘Wasn’t Sierra the Sterling family’s adopted daughter? Shouldn’t she have always lived with them?
‘Could there be some secret behind all this?’
He didn’t dare ask, so he just kept his confusion bottled up inside.
Sierra served up the food, then quickly cooked up two more dishes, and everyone gathered around the three plates and started eating.

Even though there wasn’t quite enough for everyone, it was still a huge step up from what they’d had before.
Halfway through dinner, out of nowhere, Sierra caught a faint child’s voice from far off. The voice said, “It smells so good. I’m dying to eat.”
Sierra glanced at the team: everyone seemed unfazed, clearly not hearing it.
She thought, ‘Guess I’m the only one who can hear it.’
Sierra set down her bowl and stood up from the ground.
Ethan immediately asked, “What’s wrong?” The others paused mid-bite, looking over at her.
Sierra said, “I think I heard some animal noise out there. You guys keep eating, I’ll go check it out. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”
Sophie said, “I’ll come with you.”
She put down her bowl and followed Sierra out.
Sierra nodded.

At that moment, stars sparkled above the peaks of Mount Kaelenridge, and the pure moonlight bathed the brown earth in a silvery glow.
The wind howled through the night, and the moon, with its sacred glow, illuminated a tiny, fluffy Kaelenridge Sheep.
Sierra and the little Kaelenridge Sheep locked eyes.
After freezing for a split second, the little Kaelenridge Sheep suddenly shrieked at the top of its lungs, “I’m done for! The humans are coming to get me!”
The Kaelenridge Sheep didn’t hesitate. It bolted off, tumbling and yelling, “Mom! Mom! Save me!”
In the very next moment, the little Kaelenridge Sheep made a desperate leap, only to get its soft, fluffy body adorably wedged in a gap between the weathered rocks.
Its big, shiny eyes went totally blank for a second. It glanced up at the sky, down at the ground, and finally stared at the pretty human walking over.
It muttered, “Mom, don’t wait for me to come home. Looks like the humans are about to turn me into tonight’s main
course.”
