Chapter 86
Chapter 86

Next to the main entrance of WonderWild Zoo was a small security booth, about the size of a modest room. Usually, a middle-aged guy who used to be in the army was on duty there.
After two months, the old guy was gone, and now there was a good-looking young man working as the security guard.
Sierra instantly recognized the young man.
Sierra blinked in surprise. She asked, “Ryan, what are you doing working as a security guard at the zoo? Where’s the old guard?”
Ryan’s eyes lit up when he saw Sierra. He jumped to his feet and said, “Sierra? You’re back?”
Sierra didn’t answer, but Ryan didn’t mind. He just kept talking. He explained, “The old guy retired to take care of his grandkids. I saw there was an opening here, so I applied, passed the test, and got the job.”
WonderWild Zoo really wasn’t like other zoos at all.
Most places, it was all about who one knew, but here, one had to jump through all sorts of hoops to get hired. Ryan really busted his ass to land this job.
Sierra bit her lip, then her eyes landed on a stack of books sitting on Ryan’s desk.
Ryan immediately looked flustered. It was work hours, and he’d just been caught red-handed by Sierra herself, studying on the job. He slammed the books shut in a panic.
Ryan scratched his head and said, “Sierra, let me explain. I’m really into animals, especially after you got me hooked. I missed the application window for the zookeeper position, so I figured I’d try my luck as a security guard instead.”
He thought, ‘Even if I can’t be a zookeeper or go out into the wild, at least I get to be around animals all day here, even if I’m just a security guard.
Sierra knew Ryan loved animals, but she never thought he’d go this far for them
A star student from Northbel University actually worked as a security guard? Nobody would believe it if they heard.
Sierra said with a grin, “Work hard for the exam, okay? If all goes well, maybe next year we’ll be colleagues.”
Ryan rubbed his hands together, so hyped he could barely sit still. He couldn’t even picture what it’d be like to team up with Sierra and handle things together at the zoo.
He was dying to jump up and yell, but with Sierra standing right there, he forced himself to hold it in and not totally lose his
cool.
Ryan suddenly remembered and blurted out, “Sierra, your brother Jonathan has been coming to the zoo every single day this past month, trying to see you.”
Sierra’s expression turned icy the moment she heard Jon had been here.
Ryan jumped, quickly adding, “But don’t worry, Sierra. I’ve been on guard every time. He comes in all proud, but I always show him the door before he gets anywhere near you!”
Back in school, Ryan could already tell Sierra didn’t get along with her Sterling brothers.
Honestly, he couldn’t stand the way those Sterling brothers carried themselves either.
Ryan thought, ‘Sierra is just way too chill, or maybe she just doesn’t even care enough to talk to them.

But those guys had zero self-awareness. They are always trying to boss Sierra around. It is just plain awful
Ryan couldn’t mess with Jon anywhere else. Now that he was the security guard at WonderWild Zoo, he had the authority to interrogate anyone, even an ant, trying to sneak in.
So every time Jonathan showed up, Ryan would proudly escort him right back out with his trusty security fork.
Sierra listened to Ryan go on and on, and finally cracked a smile. She said, “Not bad at all
Sierra rested her hand on Ryan’s shoulder.
Ryan’s heart nearly skipped a beat. He thought, ‘Sierra just praised me! She actually thinks I did well:
Ryan puffed up his chest, swearing with extra conviction, “Sierra, don’t worry. Next time any of the Sterlings try to show up. I’ll make sure they walk in on their feet and get carried out on their backs!”
Sierra just stared at him, lost for words.
Just as Sierra was about to say something, the roar of an engine suddenly cut through the air behind her.
Then came the blaring of a horn.
Sierra turned around and saw a pearly white Bentley Flying Spur W12 parked less than thirty feet away.
When she spotted the familiar license plate, Sierra’s brows knitted together.
She thought, “The disgusting duo is back!
The next second, Jonathan and Natalie stepped out of the car.
Sierra raised an eyebrow, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She sneered, “Out so soon? Must’ve been a real party in there. So, did you finally get the hang of sewing, or what?”
Natalie had barely stepped out of the car when she heard Sierra’s jab. Her face almost cracked.
She glanced at Sierra, then at Jonathan beside her, and suddenly dropped her head, a torrent of tears spilling down her cheeks and splashing onto the ground.
Ryan saw Jonathan show up again and immediately grabbed his security fork, striding out just in time to catch Natalie putting on her little crying act:
Ryan clicked his tongue, calling out loud, “Wow, Ms. Sterling, you must’ve been a real hard worker in there. Bet you’d ace any acting class.”
Natalie paused.
Jonathan caught Natalie’s embarrassment and frowned. He said, “Sierra, Natalie already got what’s coming to her. Let’s just drop it, okay?”
That made Natalie snap her head up, staring at him in shock.
She thought, ‘Is he really saying it was all my fault?’
Natalie clenched her jaw. Her voice was low and aggrieved as she said, “Jonathan, Sierra didn’t do anything wrong. I messed up, and I admit it. She can roast me all she wants; I don’t care.”
Ryan almost cracked up. He sneered, “Roast you? Who’s roasting you? Sierra and I are just calling it as we see it. When you’re a pro, it really shows. You’ve got everyone wrapped around your finger, even folks who can’t see straight.”

Natalie’s face froze, her head bowed, her expression dark as if she wished she could skin them both alive.
But instead of defending Natalie, Jonathan actually stepped forward and pulled out a box. He said, “Sierra, I got way too emotional before. This is the newest phone. Think of it as my way of making it up to you?
Sierra’s lashes fluttered as her eyes zeroed in on the phone in Jonathan’s hand.
Ryan, sharp as ever, saw Sierra wasn’t reaching for it but was clearly tempted, so he jumped in and snatched the phone from Jonathan before she could make a move.
Jonathan’s brows furrowed, his face darkening with displeasure.
Just then, Sierra spoke up, her voice calm but firm, “You smashed my phone. This isn’t some apology gift. It’s what you’re legally required to compensate me for.”
Jonathan felt a lump form in his throat.
After a moment, he finally asked, “Sierra, do you really want nothing to do with us anymore? Mom has been a mess lately?
Sierra cut him off coldly. She said, “Yes. I have nothing to do with the Sterlings anymore. Ryan, the zoo isn’t open to visitors yet. Escort the Sterling siblings out.”
Ryan had been itching for Sierra to say that.
He gripped his security fork and gave Jonathan a loud, contemptuous “tsk.”
Natalie quickly stepped in front of Jonathan. She said, “Sierra, Mom’s birthday is coming up in two weeks. We really hope you’ll come to her party. Ever since you left, she hasn’t been able to eat or sleep well, and she’s just not herself anymore.”
Sierra glanced over, her eyes lighting up with a mix of curiosity and mischief. She asked, “Did she starve to death or something?”
Natalie pretended to be offended. She said, “If you’re mad at the family because of me, I’ll do anything to make it up to you. But how could you curse Mom like that? She’s gotten so skinny since you left, and she’s always sick now,
Sierra nodded and said, “Oh, so she’s still alive? Guess I celebrated too soon. But if Mrs. Sterling ever does starve to death, I wouldn’t mind showing up at her memorial.”
